menomatter··on Show HN: HackerBooks – HackerTube, but for books mentioned on HN
Where does hacker books and hackertube get the data from? Is there a regular dump somewhere? Scraped, api?
menomatter··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
do the thieve eventually walk away with the laundered amount of ~6b or, at this day of age, with taint tracing and flagging it's more difficult? would NK, or the perpetrator, eventually be able to convert these to much needed FIAT to fund their ops?
menomatter··on Amazon identifies Oct 17 PHP2Shell exploitation prior to public disclosure
Do they differentiate between attempts and successful infiltration? I’m trying to understand whether this exploit is easy to use or not. There was an article here from yesterday that argued the exploit was not easy to use and needed LFI
menomatter··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
I also take it on as needed basis. .5 mg clonzepam before bed. Sometime I’d take 2 if the day has been especially rough and I need a good night sleep. It mostly help with falling asleep and feeling more centered the day after.

During a crisis I took it for a month. Then stopped. Stupid as it may be, I only fairly recently learned that this drug can cause hell but for the life of me I couldn’t understand how. All it did for me is help me sleep. I didn’t understand how it can be abused or what’s the recreational part of it. When my doc told me about the dependence, and how it may creep stopped even my occasional use and the bottle I got last Jan still sits in my meds canbinet.

Could it be that different people have different reactions or may be more susceptible to addiction to it?

menomatter··on I could've accessed 17T Microsoft records
My issue was knowing that reporting would allow them to possibly discover my identity. Discovering the vul in itself may instead be considered unauthorized access.
menomatter··on I could've accessed 17T Microsoft records
Speaking of being sue, I once found a hole in a healthcare system. I solicited legal advice and the response was overwhelmingly against reporting. The company didn’t not have a bounty program. So I shut up knowing my info is sitting there exposed. I wonder what’s the consensus on this? Do people normally report it or not?

On some forms I was advised to report hippa complaint. I can’t remember if I did. This was 10 or more years ago.

menomatter··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
Is Metas tracking more obscene than the traditional tracking suites at large corps like Crowdstrike? In 2017 I recall on launching a tor browser and in 15 mins physical security came to me that something fishy was going on.
menomatter··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
What are the design best practices and industry standards for building on-premise fallback capabilities for critical infrastructure? Say for health care/banking ..etc
menomatter··on Elon Musk's multibillion-dollar Tesla pay package blocked by a judge again
Why is anything related to Elon is so divisive. He is certainly a manifestation of the Trump phenomenon. Please someone build a Adblock filter that blocks anything related to musk and trump. I’d pay for it
menomatter··on Musk's Rivals Fear He Will Target Them with His New Power
This comment nails it: "Rich vindictive kids descend on Washington.."
menomatter··on Elon Musk's XAI in Talks to Raise Funding Valuing It at $40B
Can someone explain to me how Musk is able to repeatedly turn gambles into gold?
menomatter··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
even that is not far fetched. This is a typical supply chain attack.
menomatter··on [dead]
this is likely some sort of a supply chain attack. The videos I saw show serious explosions for radio pagers. Can lithium battery do this? Or the most likely explanation is that they were rigged with some explosives?
menomatter··on Ask HN: Freelancers, how do you get work?
Go to linkedin and search for jobs you like. There is an advanced search options where you can filter by remote, contract, part time or full time. What I meant by specific tech board is applying directly on a websites/boards/forums associated with a certain tech. For example elixir jobs .com if you are want something in that space.
menomatter··on Ask HN: Freelancers, how do you get work?
LinkedIn job search. I filter by contracts, part time, remote …etc and apply even if it’s not a perfect fit. In addition, specific tech job boards. I got a couple contract/freelance gigs this way that since 2018. The same clients keep giving me jobs in and off. I noticed it’s a bit harder now than it used to be but that’s probably across the tech market.
menomatter··on Ask HN: How to transcribe 1000s of handwritten notes
Does it work for Arabic and hebrew? I am trying to teach myself how to fine tune a model and thought doing this with my own arabic notes could be a fun project. Not sure where to start though.

update: I tired it and it works to some degree and a lot better than chatgpt.

menomatter··on Show HN: 10 Years to Build a Free SQL Editor
Congratulations on the launch! is there any write up on how it's different than other popular db management tools?
menomatter··on The xz attack shell script
curious how were you able to tell? as a non-native speaker, I too use LLM to improve my wordings/clarity but modify it to maintain my rough style
menomatter··on Backdoor in upstream xz/liblzma leading to SSH server compromise

menomatter··on Backdoor in upstream xz/liblzma leading to SSH server compromise
his account is active again on github https://github.com/JiaT75
menomatter··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
I have not been following any crypto news POST mtgx and pulling all my crypto to local storage. What did this guy actually do? Did he mismanage funds or literally took money from poeple and stashed it away?
menomatter··on Unexpected benefits of sun exposure on skin
Photoaging is the term and a quick search yields a few studies. Ex: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8802961/. And anecdotally, I never used sun screen and was exposed to a lot of sunburns in the Mediterranean climate. My skin is visibly older and more wrinkled than my peers who used skin protections. My back is full of freckles and dermatologist said this is due to sunburn. I guess sunburn doesn’t need a lot of studies to show it’s very damaging to the skin?
menomatter··on Life Is Short (2016)
Most people in the third world are barely enduring it. If you have the luxury to reflect on roads not taken, I pray that you appreciate it .. a lot.
menomatter··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
Kids from the project/poor neighborhood in metro cities still do this to a dangerous extent. I dunno what's a good balanced approach ..
menomatter··on The euro has tumbled near parity to the US dollar
Been thinking about moving to Europe while continuing to work for US companies. But it may difficult to maintain full time status while in the EU. On the other hands, there are plenty of contract jobs I can take on then move to the EU. My biggest problems are: 1) how does one manage works hours in different timezones? Perhaps one can make arrangements? 2) tax: should I take my earning into a personal account in the US/EU? Or alternatively start a corp and do corp to corp without and only pay myself minimum amount? 3) tax: do I pay taxes in the US and in the EU? Do they go after my US corporate?

I know those are difficult questions to answer but I want to put themnout there

menomatter··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Day 1 of preg: completely different. ....... ....... 9 months: no difference.
menomatter··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Curious how do you know that? Going by the traditional popular vote I'd say it's technically the minority.
menomatter··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
I'm undecided on abortion when it's not early (X weeks) and/or for medical reasons. As for the rights: Do we have the right to not carry another humanbeing even if it meant their "death"?
menomatter··on Chrome 0day is being exploited now for CVE-2022-1096; update immediately
From those commits, would you say this is RCE vulnerability taking advantage of memory/stack callbacks? Does this mean an attacker may exploit this vulnerability to compromise an entire system?
menomatter··on Hackers claim to have breached Okta systems
what about having an extra in house level of security? Something that does not require the overhead and maintenance of Identity Management System? Not sure what that would look like though.
