mephitix··on Copilot Cowork: A new way of getting work done
They worked with Anthropic on this - wrapping Claude Cowork.
mephitix··on A16z partner says that the theory that we’ll vibe code everything is wrong
IMO I would have agreed with this statement 2 months ago but now it’s clear AI is already much better at reviewing and even testing code (via spinning up simulators, etc) much better than we can. We’re already using AI’s outputs in production and not writing much code these days.
mephitix··on The Tesla Model Y Just Scored the Worst Reliability Rating in a Decade
I had the car for about 5 years since 2007 - didn't say I had it for 19 years :)
mephitix··on The Tesla Model Y Just Scored the Worst Reliability Rating in a Decade
Had my Model Y for 4 years with no issue!

Funny enough, my 2007 BMW had so many issues and cost so much to maintain i used to call it a “wallet burning machine”

mephitix··on How I use Claude Code to implement new features in an existing complex codebase
Maybe you should ask Claude ;)

mephitix··on Show HN: Inscribed, create stop motion animation and slide powered by Excalidraw
+1, onion skinning was the first thing i was looking for given it was billed as a way to create animation.

Anyway, nice project, cool to see excalidraw hosted like this.

mephitix··on React 19
React 18 was released in March 2022 though. It’s been over 2 years, not 3 weeks. I’ve also actually thought the React team is pretty careful about breaking changes. Their 19 breaking changes doc is mostly about removing already-deprecated APIs.
mephitix··on Engineers investigate another malfunction on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket
What is fake about all the milestones they achieved?
mephitix··on Hundred Rabbits is a small collective exploring the failability of modern tech
Occasionally i've stumbled upon some neat tool or beautiful software and i'm like, wow - who's behind this? And then I realize it's these two folks. Their approach is so surprising and inspiring, thanks for putting out some cool stuff into the world!
mephitix··on Hundred Rabbits is a small collective exploring the failability of modern tech
I think their philosophy / research is in understanding how to build modern software that is more resilient. So from that research/exploration standpoint it makes sense to me they would go that route instead of using older tech
mephitix··on DuckDuckGo AI Chat
I guess they mean that the chat conversations are not persisted in a DDG database. A bit misleading IMO
mephitix··on A new era of transparency for Twitter
No it’s not. Different articles.
mephitix··on Don’t teach during code reviews
100% agree with this, especially the part about slowing down code reviews. Don’t be condescending but give your opinion directly, asking if it makes sense. I personally like “what do you think about renaming this… was thinking because…”
mephitix··on Apple TV+ to adapt William Gibson’s cyberpunk novel Neuromancer
Ha I thought it was great. “Adaptation” is the key. The original book was a bit sexist…
mephitix··on Is Dark Mode Good for Your Eyes? (2020)
100% agree with using night shift/flux.

But having a monitor on in the dark, even if I use flux/night vision and even with low brightness physically hurts my eyes compared to just using dark mode on my apps.

mephitix··on Few people grasp the amount of effort Daniel Gackle expends running HN (2020)
He should write a book on moderating online communities.

Not joking, we are trying to build a large online community now and I would love to pick his brain on balancing incentives, encouraging curiosity, having equanimity, and all kinds of aspects in “practical sociology”.

I think his in-the-trenches experience would benefit many people trying to build and maintain healthy online communities.

Thanks dang!!

mephitix··on Ask HN: Good books/courses to learn networking essentials for web developers?
This is great, thanks!

+1 for both data intensive apps and Google SRE books. The other two I haven’t checked out yet

mephitix··on Ask HN: Good books/courses to learn networking essentials for web developers?
Out of curiosity, what are your other top 4 books?
mephitix··on Ask HN: How to disconnect from work?
+1000 on this. When I was younger I would work for my employer on the weekends/late nights to try to get ahead. Did that for so many years. I only gave myself a little bit of free time for myself on the weekend.

I _never_ thought I would burnout. “If you enjoy work, work life balance doesn’t matter” I would think to myself. But the point above about “it will take longer, but it will happen” is absolutely correct.

I am now burned out, 13 years later. I’m now going through the process of changing how I think about work-life-balance.

Find a passion outside of work. Think about something that is meaningful to you or some hobby you want to try.

Plan activities with your friends ahead of time - hikes, going to restaurants, just hanging out. It gives you something to look forward to on the weekends.

mephitix··on Benzene detected in many sunscreen products
It’s not behind a paywall. Scroll down to the bottom of the article - there are links to documents with the affected products and not affected products. Here’s the document with the affected documents: https://www.valisure.com/wp-content/uploads/Valisure-Citizen...
mephitix··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
Trip bundles, pinning, mail previews. Inbox was much cleaner than Gmail. Gmail also feels slower than Inbox - spinners on startup.

And other UX issues: seeing previews of images right in the email list, font/UI makes it harder to find things vs Inbox. Inbox was a much nicer UI/UX.

Ads are annoying but I would have been fine with ads if it was integrated in Inbox.

And look, I understand that it doesn’t make sense to invest in/maintain two heavily used email clients. But the most infuriating thing is the trip bundles. That was my most used feature and such a distinguishing aspect of Inbox that it’s almost insulting that Google would tell me I can “find my favorite features in Gmail” when it’s blatantly not there.

I would pay to still use Inbox.

mephitix··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
Google Inbox. And I don’t “find my favorite Inbox features in Gmail”. If you can’t tell I’m still bitter about it :(
mephitix··on Scheduling in React
>> simplest solution is usually the best one to start with. I typically start with redux

?? Redux is definitely not the simplest solution :) I’d argue that starting with local state (which is what hooks seems to be headed towards), then profiling, testing, and adding small amounts of debouncing code where appropriate is more aligned with your sentiment of “don’t prematurely optimize” vs starting with redux.

mephitix··on Designing the Flexbox Inspector
grid-gap is annoying to replicate/hack in flexbox. Although the column-reverse/row-reverse feature in flexbox is awesome.

Two big things in grid come to mind that make me use it much more than flexbox: grid-template-areas, and being able to overlap cells using lines.

In general, having a flexible first-class 2d layout is much easier to work with and change later than having nested 1d layouts.

mephitix··on Apple is putting iTunes on Samsung TVs
I want to be able to play back the iTunes movies I bought on my 4K TV without having to buy an Apple TV device.

We just recently got a 4K OLED and the difference between that and my old HD plasma (especially with HDR features) is huge.

mephitix··on Apple is putting iTunes on Samsung TVs
I hope they allow playback of 4K content... right now they only do that for Apple TV.

I purchased a bunch of movies from iTunes and was excited when they announced they’d upgrade it all to 4K for free (until they said it could only be played on Apple TV)

mephitix··on Musk mulls taking Tesla private, Saudi sovereign fund builds $2B stake
It's not a joke. It's clear based on his follow-up comments on Twitter that he's been serious about this for a while.

If there is an investigation into stock manipulation the fact that there's funding secured would factor heavily against it.

mephitix··on Musk mulls taking Tesla private, Saudi sovereign fund builds $2B stake
Super coincidental that Elon announced he was thinking about taking the company private right after this happened.

My guess is that they had run the numbers on taking the company private before. Since the Saudis had approached Elon before and he denied their offer (for whatever reason) he probably was upset that they acquired a stake through secondary markets and tweeted their half-baked plan... (not a good course of action IMO)

mephitix··on Sapper – Progressive web apps powered by Svelte
Maybe off-topic but the website is noticeably faster than the Svelte guide (https://svelte.technology/). Is it built on Sapper itself? Or is it just a static site?
mephitix··on Founder to CEO: How to build a great company from the ground up
This is a fantastic resource.

>> ...the data shows that solo founders rarely succeed. The emotional burden is just too high.

I am a solo founder and yeah, I completely agree with this. I severely underestimated the emotional burden of going it alone. I am in a much better state now, but it was definitely a struggle. If I had to do it over again this is the main thing I would change - be more open towards and work harder towards finding a co-founder.
