mfro··on Proton CEO Andy Yen: "This will be the last year that we hire engineers."
Thanks for the heads up, Andy! I’ll find a new email and vpn provider. It was a good 7 years, admittedly.
mfro··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
Orbstack, no contest
mfro··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
If you haven’t already been running your agents in containers, you’re crazy. That said, this looks like a great way to manage those containers.
mfro··on Corporate Linux
You’ll get fired for using a Chinese model here in 6 months.
mfro··on A story of WiFi secrets, UART lockdowns and a damaged flash memory chip
Sorry to hear the author is disillusioned with writing for human audiences. FWIW I continue to enjoy human writing and rather enjoyed this article.
mfro··on Show HN: Opensidian
Eh obsidian commandeered the idea from roam who commandeered the idea from org-mode etc.
mfro··on uBlock Origin Lite is back on Firefox add-ons
Yes, it is meant for the manifest v3 browsers. I think it has a simpler interface so it may be useful to non technical people.
mfro··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
Yes, but the solution differs. As the author says — updating DNS entries can be considerably less complicated than migrating libraries and their references
mfro··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
The article doesn’t mention any of these namespaces failing as the major issue… he is referring to the challenge of transferring hosting providers, which could be done for various reasons.
mfro··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
Apple Maps is much better in my experience. I've never had an update rejected.
mfro··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Surprise, case was voluntarily dismissed. Wonder how much they paid him.
mfro··on Our Servants Will Do That for Us
Even assuming the end-state of all this is Trekonomics -- consider the amount of retired folks that generally just sit around and watch TV. I think a massive culture-shift is in order before we can even consider a healthy society consisting of 0 essential employment.
mfro··on Hax – a minimalist, terminal-native coding agent written in C
Because C is the best.
mfro··on Finding zombies in our systems: A real-world story of CPU bottlenecks
Jeez. Surely the ECS agent could just query for permission to join a cluster, and disable if disallowed?
mfro··on Register deprivation: spills and runtime under forced register scarcity
I would kill to see the equipment intel uses to study these things
mfro··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good, especially if you ask right questions
Not to mention huge quant firms that paid more than 4x your salary just to get a trading latency advantage
mfro··on The great wealth transfer reality check
My comment didn’t really portray what I’m getting at. Food insecurity is obviously an indicator for financial confidence. I know people can afford food, on top of the fact they will choose to pay for it because they have to. I know people who have chosen to eat and fall behind on rent. The point is, if you’re worried about your meals, you’re not living the rest of your life with confidence. It’s not something to be brushed aside.
mfro··on The great wealth transfer reality check
Pretty big gap in quality of life between people who have no worries about their next meal and those who have to stress over every one.
mfro··on Harddrive Is Probably Full
I think about this problem often in life because of my tendency to procrastinate. Only the long term effects that cause me serious paranoia get any real attention (failing to meet social expectations, major health issues, large-figure finance problems). It’s absolutely necessary to define the constraints before they define you. This requires a lot of forward thinking and effort but considering how little time we get on this earth… worth it
mfro··on Nativ: Run frontier open models locally on your Mac
I don't love that this starts an API server on launch and has no option to disable it...
mfro··on Corners Don't Look Like That: Regarding Screenspace Ambient Occlusion (2012)
yes, this is something I have seen used to good effect, for example in the RE:4 remake
mfro··on Traders are increasingly betting against SpaceX just weeks after IPO
No, I’m just saying I don’t know if buying SPY today would be a good idea.
mfro··on Corners Don't Look Like That: Regarding Screenspace Ambient Occlusion (2012)
SSAO really is awful but it’s the best performing AO we could get for a long time afaik. It’s such a hallmark of 00s and 10s rendering that I laugh every time I see it in a modern release. There are some new solutions hitting the space, I believe RTGI/PT inherently handles AO, and there is even a new method called ‘FidelityFX CACAO’ which does look considerably more realistic. Things are improving… slowly.
mfro··on Qubes OS Security in the Public Record
Ehhh, I think most engineers that actually want this are pretty accepting of their current tooling and wouldn’t want to switch to a whole new Linux distribution just for a slightly more seamless experience. Besides, the people who care are always pushing forward to make the UX better — see devcontainers, Apple Containers, WSL, etc.
mfro··on Valve say there's no end in sight to the memory crisis, prices going to increase
The reality is more along the lines of traditional rendering with special ML models inferring and splicing in generated frames. Framegen is already in most modern games and Nvidia has made it a driver level option for many unsupported ones. In case you haven’t used it — it is black magic. Studios will have almost no motivation to optimize if framegen can be perfected, and it’s not far.
mfro··on Traders are increasingly betting against SpaceX just weeks after IPO
Would have been an amazing idea 10 years ago. Not sure anymore.
mfro··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
Fun fact, Gigabyte motherboards do the same thing. Thankfully they give you an option to disable it in BIOS.
mfro··on Measuring Input Latency on Linux: X11 vs. Wayland, VRR, and DXVK
Are you sure you've ever gone above 60hz and 60fps? It is unequivocally agreed to look much better
mfro··on Show HN: Learn by rebuilding Redis, Git, a database from scratch
Why waste time memorizing arcane flags when you can spend that time actually building things? Frankly I still check man pages for things like tar all the time and I’ve been using linux for over a decade. It becomes less of a fun learning activity and more of a chore when every tool has a hundred different invocations to memorize.
mfro··on Show HN: Davit, a Apple Containers UI
Yes, this is a separate runtime. Docker handles containerization differently with more overhead. OCI is a 'standard' way of constructing container images and both are compatible with OCI.
