michaelaiello··on Details of LockBit Ransomware and Operations
Today there was an international disruption of LockBit including law enforcement taking over the onion address and replacing it with a summary of research and enforcement actions.

https://media.licdn.com/dms/image/D5622AQFAMjEf-8Pz2g/feedsh...

The Communications Security Establishment (CSE), claims that LockBit was responsible for 44% of all global ransomware attacks.

michaelaiello··on If we all cycled like the Dutch, global emissions would drop 700M tonnes
What time horizon are we solving for? I recall a case study (apologies I do not have the reference) in business school that if everyone cycled as suggested in the article - life expectancy would increase significantly for the population leading to more carbon emissions in the long run.

michaelaiello··on Is carbon capture a viable solution?
They key metric here is how much it costs ($/TON of CO2 Captured and Sequestered). There are a range of methods and approaches to do this. The average cost for Air Capture across modern approaches is $250/Ton of C02 Captured and Sequestered.

There are other approaches besides Atmospheric Capture and Sequestration which hold more promise 1. High concentration C02 Emission Capture at source 2. Ocean surface capture and de-acidification

Wrote a quick article describing all of them linking to specific research papers and their results here https://www.projectcelsius.com/2017/05/29/capture-methods/

I expect this will follow a similar journey to how solar panel adoption went... once things tipped over the critical ($/KWH) where it made sense over grid electrical, people started to adopt. I imagine once one of the techniques reaches a critical $/TON Captured & Sequestered, governments or institutions will pay to build whatever machines to start. Right now things are too expensive using any method (i.e. using the best method, it would cost ~$12 Trillion dollars to capture and sequester ~49 Gigatons - the estimated carbon emitted in 1 year by humans in 2020)

michaelaiello··on Port knocking
Many Many Moons ago I implemented an OS version of this for windows. It was taken over a few years back and is released as KnockKnock. https://sourceforge.net/projects/knockknock/

We are now using the same technique in a network security product at AppGate which is used to protect highly sensitive workloads around the world. https://www.appgate.com/blog/dont-be-fooled-by-lowercase-sdp...

Port Knocking is great, another layer of defense.

michaelaiello··on An algorithm kicks businesses out of food stamp program on dubious fraud charges
Let's look at this from the user perspective.

Grocery store 1: No credit option, must have a positive balance on my EBT card.

Grocery store 2 (P&L Deli Grocery) flexible credit option, able to take a loan out while waiting for EBT card to get replenished.

As a customer, which one of these two offerings is better?

#2 is clearly a better grocery store. It is a grocery + lender for those on EBT cards!

The EBT system (and, likely every other credit card / merchant processor) bans informal credit because there is no basis of control or audit-ability on these kinds of transactions.

michaelaiello··on Startup idea: Do we value our laundry more than our privacy?
A few months ago, we put together http://www.privacyparrot.com which uses machine learning to try to classify what's in a privacy policy. (right now just trying to determine if a site sells your data or not). I am unfortunately confident that there isn't a viable business model in selling people online privacy for free services.
michaelaiello··on Ask HN: Please Review My Startup: What Do You Really Think About Me?
Anonymous feedback + internet seems ripe for ugliness - see http://hardnewsinc.blogs.com/.a/6a00d83428f05153ef00e553e58b...

Also, what kind of feedback are you expecting people to give which 1)is meaningful to the person it is directed to and 2) does not identify the person giving the feedback. It's very difficult to give feedback which meets both 1 and 2.

michaelaiello··on ShowHN: Identity.io, Opt-out of data brokers and regain control of your privacy
Thanks for the heads up, I actually haven't seen this site until now. We haven't gone after the "search for your data out on the internet and send opt-outs" piece of puzzle. Some of them require you to submit a copy of your driver's license. Also, it seemed like the reputation.com service is on top of this currently.
michaelaiello··on ShowHN: Identity.io, Opt-out of data brokers and regain control of your privacy
Interesting, would you really pay for it? Quite a few of the folks we've interviewed & surveyed say they'd use it, only if free. What kind of demographic do you think would be happy to pay for this kind of service.
michaelaiello··on ShowHN: Identity.io, Opt-out of data brokers and regain control of your privacy
Should be back in business if you'd like to try again.

Thanks - we must have done something wrong with apache - number of concurrent users we are having right now isn't something we've tested before...
