michaelbrooks··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I have been building a social network for Twitch, called Chattr. It is very Twitch specific as you log in with Twitch and it will automatically post when you go live. When your stream ends, it will automatically post the VOD to your followers feed. Also, if anyone who follows you on Twitch joins Chattr, then they will automatically follow you on the site too. This makes it much easier to move your community over.

You can also tip and receive tips for your posts, which can then trigger a stream alert.

You can use your own custom emotes in posts and your Twitch subscribers can also use them.

I'm really excited to be building this and we have 135 users signed up.

https://chattr.online is the link and the app is on the Play Store and Apple App Store

michaelbrooks··on Make every row and column a group of three
A dev friend made this, and it's been really fun to play. I think HN would appreciate this one
michaelbrooks··on Ask HN: Share your personal website

michaelbrooks··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
My brother was told his heart was healthy after having serious chest pains. The next day, he passed away from a heart attack due to heart disease. This was four years ago, when they were busy dealing with covid patients and in the UK.
michaelbrooks··on Meta has suspended my Facebook account
Why? Things like this happen all the time and make it to the front page of HN. I've seen people's Google accounts get locked out because of stupid reasons. The IG account has no connection to my Facebook account, and I can't understand how it has affected my Facebook account.
michaelbrooks··on Meta has suspended my Facebook account
I barely use Facebook to be honest, but it still had all my memories and connections. I've had this account for a very long time.
michaelbrooks··on Meta has suspended my Facebook account
I'm not addicted, but I've had that account since I was a teen, and it carries many memories and connections. I shared it here, hoping someone had a similar experience and could maybe share if they fixed it.

It's nothing like that at all.

michaelbrooks··on Meta has suspended my Facebook account
Thank you, and I only use it to keep updated with friends and family. Maybe this is more of a blessing in disguise
michaelbrooks··on Meta has suspended my Facebook account
Haha thanks for the humor and bringing a smile to my face despite Meta's stupidity :D
michaelbrooks··on Ask HN: What would you spend your time working on if you didn't need money?
I'd become a vocalist for a death metal band
michaelbrooks··on Farmed salmon leads to loss of nutrients, instead eat 'feed fishes' directly
Grass-fed cows still produce methane and require vehicles to transport them when bought and when slaughtered. The fields they are kept in will also need trees to be cleared and plants killed in favour of grass. How does that not add to climate change?
michaelbrooks··on Red flags in the Threads privacy policy
You can view profiles and posts, but you can't do anything more on the website. They are working to build a working website, but their focus is on the app.
michaelbrooks··on Why Tipping Prompts Are Suddenly Everywhere
Here's the link to avoid the paywall https://archive.ph/n7kjn
michaelbrooks··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Sponsored content isn't controlled by YouTube though, it's controlled by the creator
michaelbrooks··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
You can fix that with a VPN service, or by creating your own VPN network. You could buy a Digital Ocean droplet in your location and connect to that like a VPN.

michaelbrooks··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Also, if you look at content creators who share their revenue, they actually make more money from Premium subscribers than they do from ads. So if people want to really support content creators, then subscribing to Premium is the best option.
michaelbrooks··on Show HN: Thoughts on Flash in 2023, in Flash, in 2023
I owe my career to Flash. I got started because my school would block game sites, and we weren't allowed to play games at lunch time. I used Flash to learn how to make games and then play them in School. If anyone said I couldn't play games, I would respond with "I'm learning to make the game", and they would give me a pass.

It's the reason I got into scripting/programming, and I'm now a web developer.

michaelbrooks··on Buzz Chat taking over social networking
I set my relationship status to married and it says "Don't cheat!". Such a weird thing to put on a social network. The help section doesn't work and some social icons aren't aligned correctly on FireFox. Also, why is the BAT icon used for basic account?

All in all, a strange experience and I don't think it will be taking over Twitter any time soon.

michaelbrooks··on Open RuneScape Classic
This brings me back to the days of Moparscape and creating my own private server. I remember joining the forums and sharing my code for colour coding the menus. Great times!
michaelbrooks··on YouTube accounts on the partner program are being hacked
Thank you. It’s not just him either. If you go to Reddit and search the YouTube subreddit for “hack” you’ll see it’s affected so many more people. This is bigger than it seems and YouTube needs to sort this out fast!
michaelbrooks··on Plant-based meat is turning out to be a flop
Fable mushrooms are the closest thing to steak-like that I've ever had. It's even better than the fake meat steaks I've found in supermarkets. I was never a lover of mushrooms in the first place, but these don't even taste or feel like a traditional mushroom. It looks and feels more like steak.
michaelbrooks··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
For anyone not using Apple devices, DDG has email generation built into their browser plugin. I'm not sure if it's in their broswer app, but I'm sure they will add the feature.
michaelbrooks··on Mastodon Client Elk
I heard about this yesterday on Mastodon. You can use markdown to format your text which is really nice. However, I feel for anyone not using this app will have an ugly experience if they follow anyone that does.
michaelbrooks··on Find your Twitter friends on Mastodon
People can add ActivityPub to their websites/blogs, and it will be a part of the fediverse. WordPress has a plugin for this, and you can add your own implementation as well.
michaelbrooks··on Surging Energy Prices in Europe in the Aftermath of the War
In the UK, we had a 57% increase in energy bills from July, and we're now looking at another 80% increase from October which is terrifying for a lot of us.
michaelbrooks··on Ask HN: Warm Welcomes a.k.a. Newbie Fingering
It's also used a lot in the guitar world as guitarists practice their "fingering technique"
michaelbrooks··on Publishing your work increases your luck
Not just sharing work, but sharing stories as well. I recently did a 3-peaks challenge for charity and tweeted about my accomplishments which has led to my next line of work.

I also shared about buying my first house which led to 2 news articles and 1 podcast 30 second audio clip that have all paid money, and given me more exposure. It's been great!

michaelbrooks··on Sex is going out of fashion?
I'd say the explosion of mental health and anxiety is playing a huge part in it as well. My wife and I would have a child if we knew we were stable and able to look after them properly. Also, with the wars, global warming and everything else that's happening right now, why would you want to bring a child into this?
michaelbrooks··on Building a blog from scratch in 2022 using Hugo, Docker and a bit of Python
I've gone from using WordPress to static sites and back again because I missed having all the features that WP offered. Even Ghost is simpler but still nicer than any static site I've created.
michaelbrooks··on [dead]
In the UK, we're told that if someone let's us out, we should always look first to make sure nothing else is coming. Just because you allowed them to pull out doesn't mean you told them it was safe to do so, and they should have still looked to ensure it was safe to pull out.

I agree with your wife and don't think you caused the accident. It was their fault for not being more aware of their surroundings.
