mikesickler··on Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32s
I’m building a shot tracking app that I’d love to integrate with this, open LaneTalk style.
mikesickler··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Working on a drink pacing app: https://www.trypound.app/

I lost a lot of weight on GLP-1s, and on top of that my tastes changed. Instead of IPAs, I like cocktails now, and the transition made me feel like my own internal clock was out of whack.

Also, also: these hard seltzers are totally crushable, waayyyy too easy to drink fast. So this app helps with that, too.

mikesickler··on PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory. RAM jumps to $600 due to shortage
I bought 32GB x 2 of G.SKILL a year ago and paid $204. Now it's $600. Insane
mikesickler··on A $1k AWS mistake
Got killed by AWS Macie. The default 5K cap is brutal
mikesickler··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Foreign held debt is less than 30% of outstanding, and less than that is sovereign-owned, so I don't think devaluing or attempting to restructure foreign debt via "century bonds" will have much effect on US debt obligations.

I seriously doubt this administration understands any of this. I agree that they don't care, but I don't think they know what's going to happen. No one does.

mikesickler··on Gene Hackman has died
Scarecrow (1973) is a little-known Gene Hackman and Al Pacino movie that's kind of great
mikesickler··on What to do about America's killer cars
This is a really out of touch take.
mikesickler··on Once the world's largest, the Pennsylvania Hotel goes 'poof' before our eyes
Fun to learn that the hotel and phone number inspired the movie Transylvania 6-5000!
mikesickler··on The Oracle Java Platform Extension for Visual Studio Code
Sorry if dumb question, but is LSP similar to what Steve Yegge talked about years ago, I think on a StackOverflow podcast, whereby a language would declare its capabilities to tooling?
mikesickler··on Elon Musk Picks a Fight with the Wrong Senator
The $8 plan is such an obvious unforced error that you have to wonder if Elon has anybody pushing back on him. This entire debacle also draws into relief the difference between a product company like Tesla, or Apple, for that matter, and Twitter. Musk can establish a vision for Tesla or SpaceX, and then it’s all about the execution. With Twitter, there’s the vision, then the execution, then the unintentional side-effects. And the personnel who have the crucial seasoning needed to anticipate the side-effects are mostly gone.
mikesickler··on Show HN: My website, hosted on a 386 25 MHz, 4 MiB of RAM, 38400 baud internet
I hope you've disabled call-waiting on your phone line :)
mikesickler··on Chrome HTTP – HTTPS redirect (in some cases) resulting in insecure warning
It appears that they have decided to roll this back: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=115816...
mikesickler··on Battle Chess
I learned to play chess with the help of this game on an Atari ST.
mikesickler··on Uber made nearly $500M from a 'safe rides fee' – money went to company
He works for the New York Times. They have editors. He's not some lone wolf journalist/activist
mikesickler··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Search
yes! tokenization and problems with word boundaries alone would be great to dive into!
mikesickler··on Ask HN: Favorite nonfiction books of 2018?
* Math with Bad Drawings

* The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World

* Bad Blood

mikesickler··on GoDaddy to suspend domain name Gab.com tomorrow
Lots of noble and admirable people use Twitter, in addition to shitbags. I challenge you to find a decent person who is an active user of Gab.
mikesickler··on GoDaddy to suspend domain name Gab.com tomorrow
The difference is that the worst stuff you generally see on Twitter is the stuff that is highest-voted content on Gab.
mikesickler··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
My son is having "a moment"
mikesickler··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
For low value, high volume merchants, Square's rate is extremely competitive.
mikesickler··on Here’s How You Can Help Fight Family Separation at the Border
Detain them as a family, then. Separating children, some infants, from their parents, is cruel and unusual. The stated aim of the policy is to be so abominable that it acts as a deterrent. You okay with that?
mikesickler··on Twitter urges users to change passwords after computer 'glitch'
Of course it could have! No API is foolproof
mikesickler··on Panera Bread did nothing about its customer data vulnerability for eight months
I hear what you're saying, but the only way to get this industry to take customer data security seriously is to shame them. Fast food operations place a spotlight on food safety now, as a result of several high-profile outbreaks in the past. The same thing needs to happen for data security.
mikesickler··on Peace for Triple Piano
Vi Hart is like all the Tenenbaum children rolled into one. So much talent!
mikesickler··on New York's vanishing shops and storefronts: 'It's not Amazon, it's rent'
Anecdotally, I've noticed that shopping mall rents have been increased sharply over the past 5-7 years for specialty food stores. Historically in specialty foods malls would target about 15% of sales for their rents. Lately that's ratcheted up to 20% of sales. It's getting harder and harder for independent (even franchised) operators to make money in the mall.
mikesickler··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
yeah I get that. But it's not unusual for a man to use it in a formal setting.
mikesickler··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
What's weird about a white dude referring to himself as 'watashi'? I'm a white dude and I have done that plenty of times.
mikesickler··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
I'm guessing that for Korean it's mostly the grammar differences, honorifics, and writing system.
mikesickler··on Ask HN: Is Comcast having internet problems?
Same in Philly
mikesickler··on Category 5 Hurricane Irma Brings 180-MPH Winds to Bear on Caribbean Islands
As the models are updated, I'm starting to get more and more concerned about Tampa Bay: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/health/environm...
