mistrial9··on Trademarks and Symbols, Volume 2: Symbolical Designs (1973)
by clicking into the collection, there is a single symbol screen that encourages the user to copy license info e.g.

Mark 0762 from Trademarks & Symbols, Volume 2: Symbolical Designs, by Yasaburo Kuwayama. Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, 1973. Designer: Eelco Bos (Netherlands). Company: Hofdrukkerijen Arps & Zoon. Noncommercial use only. Trademark belongs to its owner.

I agree that screen resolution is not print resolution. Many of the marks are designed for a low-res version too.. you are right and there is more to the discussion.. print application resolution is very well thought out, as you likely know well.

mistrial9··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
East Santa Clara County public schools are doing what now?
mistrial9··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
> they introduce variables in 2nd grade

you are not familiar with public education here. In one coastal city, more than 40 languages are spoken by students at home, with Spanish being a large component.

What I am saying is that 9th grade through 12th grade public standard curriculum is the topic of debate, with some groups, today, advocating removal of "advanced placement' courses in a broad way.

There is massive difference between certain particular schools, and the broad standardized, State-assigned curriculum.

I agree your headline is two years old
mistrial9··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
Here in California, apparently algebra is "too hard" for 8th graders.. the tests scores look bad, so "algebra" is now a target of political action.. to remove it.

Seriously, public schools in California are proposing removing the advanced math classes completely. This is not an old story, this is now.

mistrial9··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
.. while they leave lighting on around the building and outside for 24 hours a day; they pay for ads who-knows-where.. The efficiency call is galling to me because we have had thirty years to increase efficiency with miracle tech like LED lighting, and yet little has been done.

So, what's not to like?

mistrial9··on Utah charges Kalshi and its CEO with illegally promoting online gambling
or, gambling is proven addictive, has provable financial costs to others.. and is therefore regulated. Precedent in Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, some medications, other things.

In other words, in a very free and fair society, I personally see the need for regulation and oversight for this activity. Is that a carte blanche for surveillance and command-and-control things? no .. this is not new, the media over which it takes place is new.

mistrial9··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
the way I read this passage - author claims to be not a particularly skilled or fast-paced practitioner, and yet it is true that author is using agents like this. Next, very advanced researchers -- in the heart of the AI Frontier industry -- are using many more agents with much larger actions.

The "median developer" refers to the particularly skilled or fast-paced, not that there are continuous numbers of every practitioner using N-agents

mistrial9··on Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop
An Oregon State official came on to a State of California zoom meeting as an invited speaker. The Zoom meeting was public, but niche.. maybe the man did not realize it, or maybe just had confidence. The Oregon State govt bureaucrat described in detail a two-layer system for storing certain public records, such that the records subject to Freedom of Information Act were "not available" to the public facing system. The bureaucrat said quote "this is designed to avoid public information requests". I assume that he thought he was in a closed meeting of California bureaucrats to use such language openly.

mistrial9··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
> US threw this out of the window starting with the Patriot Act

there are branches of govt in the US system, not a single entity. Even the almighty secret police have been curtailed many times.

Believe me, not everyone is onboard with this approach to surveillance

mistrial9··on AI and the Enclosure of the Scientific Commons
this approach of calling critics "whiners" then making sweeping, naive statements regarding both capital-S Science and also markets, is shallow.

The West collectively has touched markets with Science using concepts of property rights. All of that is upturned now. I agree that publishing portals like Elsivier have done damage to Science while enriching the company and its allies. However that complaint looks quaint compared to literally four military-industrial groups running all new discoveries and their commercialization.

This is not resolved at all...

mistrial9··on Americans Trust in Federal Government Sinks to New Depths
here in the San Francisco Bay Area, about three hours from now the actual tide sea levels will be about 1.42 feet above the predicted (Federal) tidal charts. I have been under the impression that those charts are politics-free and generally very accurate. Are the applicable Federal ocean tidal charts updated right now?

I will note that only 15 years ago, an indy report called "Adapting to Rising Tides" that shows this exact situation, was publicly attacked by several local govt agencies here, while the idea of "Climate Change" was actively attacked in the public media.

mistrial9··on Deloitte falsified documents to evade tax on Abramovich's wealth
I believe that almost zero wealth centers are scandal-free, and that some people collect the info badly, others do it very well, and there is an economy based on that alone. Enforcement is selective, intermediaries are constantly paid by various means, and time is on the side of many involved.

Picking on particular scandal to publicize is more like picking from large heaps of content in a collection, not anything unique or unusual at all.. just not widely known for real reasons...

Tax evasion is a game played by 100% of sophisticated players, to start IMHO

the AIs were in fact found to be doing it, by humans, and the behavior was "interesting" and it went on for weeks like that.
