mjmsmith··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
It's worse to call out racism than it is be racist. This is American politics today in a nutshell. Your turn.
mjmsmith··on "Musk" Documentary Pulled from Almost Every One of 472 Theaters After One Week
I can believe that this film would have trouble finding an audience.

On the one hand, I'm a huge fan of Alex Gibney's documentaries and I would normally be enthusiastic about a new film. On the other hand, I find Elon Musk utterly loathsome and, more importantly, completely uninteresting beyond his loathsomeness. I just can't work up any desire to spend a few hours with the man.

Compare this with You Can See Everything. I think Elizabeth Holmes is a fraud, but at least she's an interesting fraud.

[Hmmm, this was briefly flagged/dead?]

mjmsmith··on Tesla Roadster
I don't hate Tesla either. I'm actually a bit disappointed knowing that I will never consider buying one for the rest of my life.
mjmsmith··on America.gov
> That's outside America's scope

We know, we know.

mjmsmith··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Project Farm (https://www.youtube.com/@ProjectFarm).
mjmsmith··on Attention is all you have
For the same reason that you could tell a joke without feeling the need to explain it.
mjmsmith··on A coffee shop owner used AI to make a menu poster. Then came the angry DMs
I imagine that some?/many? customers of a locally-owned coffee shop are choosing it precisely because it's not a soulless megacorp. They're choosing a different vibe on purpose. Ugly AI advertising is the opposite of that vibe.
mjmsmith··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
True, in the sense that right wing extremists apparently have no agency and no responsibility for their actions or beliefs.
mjmsmith··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
To be intellectually honest, please name a few open communists infiltrating the other party.
mjmsmith··on Zohran and the Short Link
It's ok to keep our personal problems to ourselves.
mjmsmith··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
Perhaps not their best work: https://www.ikea.com.tr/en/product/gangvag-grey-170x240-cm-l...
mjmsmith··on The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert
Recently published, curious if anyone has read it: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/735472/the-ego-trip...
mjmsmith··on Ghost Cut – Or why Cut and Paste is broken everywhere
How can you be sure that the undo stack is in sync with the clipboard? Wouldn't cut+paste be a more reliable pseudo-copy than cut+undo?

mjmsmith··on Map Clustering Is Not My Favorite
My iOS app using MapKit is smooth with ~4k annotations on an iPhone 14. My experience is that it doesn't really start to choke until you get closer to ~10k.
mjmsmith··on A dumpster arrived behind my university's library
I'd like to believe that real books would get swapped more often than stolen.
mjmsmith··on "Don't You Just Upload It to ChatGPT?"
The Empire Strikes Back: "I'm your dad."
mjmsmith··on "Don't You Just Upload It to ChatGPT?"

mjmsmith··on BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada
Still, if you're going to buy a car from an enemy of liberal western democracy, you might as well buy BYD over Tesla.
mjmsmith··on The better the autopilot the worse the pilot
I drive a manual Mazda 3 because I like the greater feeling of connection to the machine, but also because I think it makes me pay more attention. When I rent an automatic, it feels like a (literal) blunt instrument in comparison. I understand the appeal of (semi-) self driving, but the whole idea still makes me nervous. I can't really imagine sitting in a car doing nothing for long stretches of time but still being alert and ready to take control at any random moment.
mjmsmith··on How LLMs work
> It’s like a Redditor, it just repeats what it has seen other people say.

Can stochastic parrots understand irony?

mjmsmith··on The newest Instagram “exploit” is the goofiest I've seen
If this exploit has nothing to do with AI, why haven't we heard about it succeeding before? I find it hard to believe it's never been tried.
mjmsmith··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
And yet your observation, contradicted by actual statistics, is apparently justification for 'IMO the "powers that be" panicked and drove the population into mass hysteria.' It's mysterious.
mjmsmith··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
There have been over 100 million cases and over one million deaths in the US. Congratulations to you and your acquaintances for being extreme outliers.
mjmsmith··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
Many Americans were traumatized by being asked to wear a mask because they’re big angry babies. Many other Americans were traumatized by the discovery that they’re surrounded by big angry babies.
mjmsmith··on NASA Force
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this administration thinks it sounds more manly.
mjmsmith··on We gave an AI a 3 year retail lease and asked it to make a profit
I think that depends on what the "extreme body modification of an unprintable and life-altering nature" was.
mjmsmith··on Dark Castle
Z Sculpt sells an updated version of Return to Dark Castle:

mjmsmith··on Artemis II crew see first glimpse of far side of Moon [video]
It's safe to assume that racist young Republicans contribute more to the difficulty of being black in America than vice versa. What's your point?
mjmsmith··on OpenScreen is an open-source alternative to Screen Studio
