there used to be excellent youtube tutorial videos for this by one brandon walsh, archived here:

mlatu··on Vacuum airship
i think the most promising research is atmospheric ionic thrusters.

sure they have little to do with vacuum per se but if you could improve them enough to build a sort of cavity with lower pressure inside while providing upwards thrust, essentially directing air streaming into the cavity whereever you want to direct it to, you could both have your cake and eat it. it would be a very good insect trap and a highly efficient way to get rid of excess electricity quickly. perhaps you could also fix the ozone layer with this...

;)

is an "employee of a major customer" an "outside observer"?
mlatu··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
personally, i found the slide from mr airforce kinda insulting to vmware:

"if its good enough for weaponssystems, its probably good enough for you."

yeah, i can see how that could deserve a "fuck you"...

from all of vmwares employees.

mlatu··on Is ORM still an anti-pattern?
fuck. thank you. had to collapse three pages of comments to find this... fucking hell

mlatu··on Generating Income from Open Source
so you have an about window that says "look how lazy i was, i used all this software i dont support and you still have to pay me full price"

idk. it reaaaaally _isnt_ that big a selling point to see all the open source projects one has used in a commercial application as you might be thinking

mlatu··on Louis Rossmann calls community to leave Reddit
kbin has dedicated up/downvote buttons and counts, just like good old.reddit
mlatu··on Louis Rossmann calls community to leave Reddit
well, what good is it when google indexes ANYTHING? even cohost appears high in results nowadays... and dont get me started about how google includes also crap generated by llms... google is on its course of devalueing itself.

the human internet is probably doomed. long live the llm generated internet

oh which gives me an idea: fake users as a service: using llm to generate comments for reddit after the dark

mlatu··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
i PRAY for them not to recover. the trouble is, the point with giving subs to IP owners, is extremely likely. though as likely is that reddit will be just bought whole by some ass or another...

i realize this sounds very harsh, but at this point: anything that drives people into federated services is a godsend

mlatu··on Why Lisp Syntax Works
XD yeah. you can implement lisp in any language.
mlatu··on Why Lisp Syntax Works
whataboutthem?
mlatu··on Why Lisp Syntax Works
sure, disregard that one word and suddenly it all falls apart. what is homoiconicity anyways? doesnt matter you say?

it is the feature of the code being represented the same way as the datastructures it manipulates. i know, what a completely unneccessary and unimportant point. now let's all forget this and turn our attention back to the compiler, it wants you to fix those bugs now... back to work.

all chatgpt and similar tech does is undermine our trust in "what we perceive has actual value because some human took the time to make it in the first place". first sponsored ads, now this shit. it's the tragedy of the commons, again and again with our attention as the abused common good

mlatu··on Speak English to me: The secret world of programmers
> The difficulty you found has little to do with Excel;

i claim, if you allowed access to an underlying source code representation of the spreadsheet, or rather, if you made that transformation at all, you could easily add symbols and labels to transform an excel sheet into something a programmer could turn into a binary but i doubt that step inbetween is desired

I mean, the activity of analyzing an excel spreadsheet is more akin to learning where all the items in your favourite point and click adventure is and in what order to get them where, than to actually analyzing a problem

mlatu··on Speak English to me: The secret world of programmers
as much as i hate microsoft, excel endearingly excels expectations...
mlatu··on Speak English to me: The secret world of programmers
> Excel is powerful, but it’s not easy to learn. It only seems that way to people who already know how it works.

this right there.

except, it IS easy to learn actually. it's visual, you can click around and find out. if you forget the spelling of some formula, no probs, there is a help button.

the interface is what makes it easier, markdown is also an interface. except it's not AS exposed to the user as excel is.

people dont want to read manuals or consult documentation, they want to hit the ground running.

mlatu··on Touchpad Blocker: Disable touch-pad while typing
not sure how that clashes with anything... and wasnt arguing for blindly following tutorials in the first place so i'll just skip over that (albeit very valid) point...

> Basic settings [...] should not be poweruser setting/feature needing workarounds and external downloads

yes.

> windows anti malware is excelent at protection

it can only be as good as its heuristics. generally speaking: antivirus is snake oil. i think instead of wasting more and more processing on detecting malware the user downloaded, users should be taught to use their machines properly. you dont expect a child to drive a car, and yet even more complex footguns seem fair game. and a child could easily do alot of (financial) damage with a computer.

> I don't want to compile anything for my OS.

that's fair. i wrote "you could". i mostly meant the capability. the actual work could be and usually is delegated to trustworthy users. (read "trustworthy" either from your pov or of the dev of the original application, if that person already is... uh... malwaring you, all this is moot of course. (also assuming a "good" dev who checks pull requests))

mlatu··on Touchpad Blocker: Disable touch-pad while typing
do you want to know how to get malware?

by following this thought:

> there's always a free easy to use GUI app (like the one featured in this topic) that can be downloaded and it's nearly guaranteed to work despite its age

im not saying this tool contains malware, im saying, if it's a system function, the system should allow you to configure it. and no, i dont see missing widgets in open source settings panels as the problem since you could easily compile a better settings panel for yourself

mlatu··on An EV that removes CO2 from the air
who is angry?

im just stating the obvious, idk why you feel the need to defend this, but if you are affiliated with the team then just go back to the drawing board and dont waste your time trying to talk people into liking this. it's a sensationalist claim, obviously people will dispute it.

mlatu··on An EV that removes CO2 from the air
then go ahead and improve it, nobody is telling anyone to stop improving shit. but claiming you could use a tech at a point in time where it is not much more than a gimmick, people wont take it serious or too serious. just like with ChatGPT: just because it can return highly probable language doesnt mean its correct.

just because you can drive one "artificial tree" around doesnt mean you should pursue in making those on a scale fit to dent the problem, because in making those "trees" you just release more dead-tree-gas and make the problem worse before you can make it better.

mlatu··on An EV that removes CO2 from the air
if you could trade your old car for one of those: definetly.

if you have to pay any amount comparable to a low-end car: maybe.

any more than that and the answer becomes: highly unlikely.

but whether or not this is a good idea or efficient under any definition of the word? idk. probably a bad idea, too consumer oriented for a problem that could be better tackled on a larger scale

mlatu··on Use GNU Emacs
i admire their silicon for its power efficiency, i truly and honestly do. but i dislike the manufacturers' politics up until now.

if apple ever becomes a beacon of openness, transparency and sustainability: sign me up for the newsletter. i'll even consider their ridiculous pricetags if apple became comparable to, let's say MNT.

in the meantime im considering to switch my personal laptop over from a T220 to a mnt reform
