mmargerum··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
How did they get it to run well on the iPhone 2 I wonder if it was that slow
mmargerum··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
It’s not the working with people that I mind . It’s the lack of discipline in companies to spec anything out up front so your day is sprinkled with meetings and impromptu discussions absolutely murdering productivity . Then you have to work late just to get your work done. Maybe half days on site make more sense
mmargerum··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
Start in 91. It was so much better than it is now. Editor, compiler, and a few books. You built everything : windowing, dbase/ndx support, printer drivers, keyboard handling. It was the best of times. Desqview was peak multitasking ha. Don’t let anyone lie to you it was great.
mmargerum··on I fixed Windows native development
If you are looking to rapidly build windows native apps just use Delphi. Superlative tool for this. Been using since ‘95
mmargerum··on Web development is fun again
Really like using alpine with a classical JS server rendered stack too. Most crud apps don’t need a spa app and now you are working out of one code base again. Codex chews through this kind of code
mmargerum··on If you're going to vibe code, why not do it in C?
Why have types? AI can infer everything. The ultimate ai language is as terse as possible to keep token count down but can still be understood by a human
mmargerum··on GNU Artanis – A fast web application framework for Scheme
Disappointed they didn’t use hiccup to generate html. Format?
mmargerum··on Job Listing Site Highlighting H-1B Positions So Americans Can Apply
Not seeing the "top talent" part at least from the H1B I have worked with which is probably in the hundreds at this point.
mmargerum··on ImRAD is a GUI builder for the ImGui library
Delphi is leagues better and still supported
mmargerum··on Writing GUI apps for Windows is painful
Delphi is the superlative windows desktop development tool. It does support styling and just about anything else you would want. There is a free alternative in Lazarus but I don’t know if it supports styling
mmargerum··on Tailwind Isn't for Me
Seems like you can quickly build out what you want in tailwind and then convert to css using an ai tool
mmargerum··on How to Do Great Work
Why doesn't paul take some of that cash horde and put it into the LISP community? Maybe he does?
mmargerum··on How to Do Great Work
If your personal projects are "work" then yes do not bother. These are my creative outlet and where I get to enjoy coding again. My day job is massive .net/angular/sql projects that are just meh.
mmargerum··on The Rust I wanted had no future
ASP.NET AOT support coming in .net 8
mmargerum··on Why Lisp?
I consider not having types a feature. One of the reasons i like clojure. spec > static types
mmargerum··on Dropbox telemetry can't be disabled
i've never had a single issue with dropbox on 3 macs in 10 years. Plenty of issues with google drive and one drive (or whatever it's newest name is).
mmargerum··on Understanding ChatGPT
What happens when half the publicly availble code is chatgpt output and its training itself on its own previous answers?
mmargerum··on Mastodon hit 10M users
Twitter has gotten better. probably for the reasons you mention.
mmargerum··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
I stepped into a project at work to help out knowing almost no typescript and wrote angular http routines that just worked in a few hours with chatGPT. first we started with any and then we built out an interface and it helped me use the map function in http to build out a result array without any intermediate array creation.

I 100% would not have written the code as well as it came out with gpt's help.

mmargerum··on Smalltalk: An Entrepreneur’s Secret Weapon? (2020)
And yet node.js scales without threads.
mmargerum··on Smalltalk: An Entrepreneur’s Secret Weapon? (2020)
Have a look at glamorous toolkit and you'll understand why separate documentation is an arcane idea.
mmargerum··on Smalltalk: An Entrepreneur’s Secret Weapon? (2020)
Build Glamorous toolkit in C++ LOL. The language matters.
mmargerum··on We're never getting rid of ChatGPT
I just generated an httpkit clojure web app hat fetches coin and price info from coinmarketcap in 15 minutes. This would have been a minimum of 4 hours based on my current clojure ability. It's doesn't have to be 100% right. You are still expected to grok code. It's simply an assistant and it's bloody amazing.
mmargerum··on Intel discontinues pathfinder for RISC-V program
It's all about the next quarter and until that stops being true it's going to hurt U.S. competitiveness
mmargerum··on Emacs Is Not Enough

mmargerum··on Java is in decline, and there's data to prove it
I've steered clear of c# my whole career but .net 7 is the bees knees. the minimal API makes it very easy to build endpoints without a bunch of ceremony code.
mmargerum··on Java is in decline, and there's data to prove it
C# grew and it's almost as old.
mmargerum··on Silver Bullet: Markdown-based extensible open source personal knowledge platform
Exactly my thought. What I need though is a web front end to search and view my org files when I don't have emacs available to me. I have client laptops that will only let me access browser apps.
mmargerum··on Lisp-stick on a Python
You know all those DSL's you use to do templating, SQL, scripting? You don't need them in Lisp.
mmargerum··on 'It's so liberating': The people quitting social media
Twitter is the least taxing of the social media sites to use and I actually get useful info from it. Just curate who you follow to keep the SNR up. I don't have any other social media accounts. The rest is just trash
