mnx··on Eight Bits of Trust: eMudhra's CA keys cracked in milliseconds
I made test.key4.lol if you want to quickly check if your device/browser is vulnerable still.
mnx··on Penpot: The Open-Source Figma
"starbucks says there is no limit on how many napkins I can use but they got mad when I took the whole container, liars"
mnx··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
The argument goes, the purpose of prediction markets is not to be fair, it's to provide information. Allowing insider trading benefits that purpose. And I think that's fair - this is not a place to invest your retirement savings, it's essentially gambling.
mnx··on Talk Python in Production
Yeah, immediately off-putting, even though I actually enjoy the podcast. Not for like "AI bad" reasons, it's just ugly. Micheal, if you are reading this - please fix, it should take 5 minutes.
mnx··on Gem.coop
Might be worth noting the figure in question is the creator of Ruby on Rails.
mnx··on Spotify Down
App and streaming mostly work for me (slower then ususal and search seems broken). Interesting outage.
mnx··on Kindle as a High-Contrast GPS
Simple and clever. One concern I have is in my experience the kindle displays are quite fragile, I would worried it would break mounted like that.
mnx··on More than $70B wiped off crypto market in 24 hours as BTC drops 8% below $20K
Still remember when 10k USD/BTC was the unrealistic target everyone laughed at. Funny how we blew way past that, but without achieving nearly any real usecases.
mnx··on Can I Email?
Only 50% support for <marquee>? Where is this world going.
mnx··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
The finite supply is a feature, not a bug. I agree there are many aspects of bitcoin that suck, but not this one. We are right now witnessing many governments printing more and more money, which makes it less and less valuable. Bitcoin avoids that.
mnx··on Twitter acquires Revue
no way to prevent just adding a 'not' while still allowing sensible editing.
mnx··on Searching for 'VK' shows only a single result on DuckduckGo. Why?
A different one at that. But other 2-letter queries return normal sets of results.
mnx··on Captcha.nsa.gov
It seems like we broke it -- it now refuses to do any searches for me (due to suspicious activity from 'my' ip)
mnx··on What Happened in the UK Blackouts?
If I listen carefully, I can tell the difference between 48 and 50hz using a sine generator (although it's very subtle), so I'd guess that you possibly could.
mnx··on Bill to put health warnings on soda and sugary drinks advances in California
Can you tell me more? This is a bold claim, I'm curious what are you basing your apparent confidence on.
mnx··on USB4 Specification Announced: Adopting Thunderbolt 3 Protocol for 40 Gbps USB
Yeah until the spec changes/expands and you now need another device to tell you whether that stick is up-to-date on the spec :D
mnx··on Want to Stop Fake News? Pay for the Real Thing
Yep. Especially since communicating clearly is exactly their job.
mnx··on Google’s also peddling a data collector through Apple’s back door
I'm not sure if "in violation of contract" counts as illegal in this case.
mnx··on AresDB: Uber’s GPU-Powered Open-Source, Real-Time Analytics Engine
That's important. But it does not stand in opposition to this.
mnx··on Mastercard will stop free trials from automatically billing once they're over
in the EU, you can use revolut - their paid plan seems to provide a service pretty similiar to privacy.com
mnx··on Yellow vests knock out 60% of all speed cameras in France
That speed limit might be more noise related. So the harm is much different, but the victims are people living nearby.
mnx··on Lime and Bird are growing rapidly
Yes! This is a major issue even in moderate traffic. They could probably adapt the under-side lights to function as turn signals. The scooters are just too narrow to drive one-handed.
mnx··on How Restaurants Got So Loud
Yes! It seems like somehow many bar/restaurant owners have no interest in making their spaces sonically comfortable. I've been in some that felt like they were designed for maximum reverb. The few ones with acoustic panels on the walls / ceilings are so nice in comparison. I really hope caring about the way your place sounds becomes standard.
mnx··on A fullscreen desktop application resembling a sci-fi computer interface
I'm relatively young. I use emojis daily - they are part of the way we use slack in our company. I still don't really like them. It just feels like they are necessary because we have no standard for embedding actual pictures - and so we are cramming more and more of them into Unicode, using weird hacks like zero-width-joiner sequences, and so on. The rate at which they are added, means any given implementation is likely to be out of date, and display nonsense. They are also often a confusing way to communicate.

And yet, I don't quite hate them - they can be useful. I just wish we had something better.

mnx··on A fullscreen desktop application resembling a sci-fi computer interface
Off topic, but I think it's the first time I see emojis in commit messages. Nice to see that it works, but I don't know how to feel about it.
mnx··on The EU Terrorist Content Regulation – a threat to the ecosystem and user rights
"probably works" without any evidence is not the standard I feel should be set for taking away the most basic freedoms.
mnx··on The EU Terrorist Content Regulation – a threat to the ecosystem and user rights
Yeah, but unless you're going full totalitarian, I don't see how it can work. It will just add additional legitimacy to the speech which is 'suppressed'. So unless you want to do a china style great firewall, and punish people for speaking out, maybe it's better to actually defend freedom, instead of limiting freedom in the name of protecting freedom?

Sorry if I sound frustrated. But I just think all this anti-free speech is a knee-jerk reaction to the symptoms of the rising far-right, not a well thought-out strategy of preserving liberal democracy.

mnx··on The EU Terrorist Content Regulation – a threat to the ecosystem and user rights
The rise of fascists is EXACTLY WHY we should make sure such values are protected, not an excuse to abandon them. Do you really think you can prevent the rise of fascism by forbidding speech? How would that work?
mnx··on Google may shut down its news service in Europe
Taking the title 1:1 is the policy, unless the title is bad. Also, what about those tl;dr comments people often post? Would that mean HN should pay?
mnx··on Billboards are an old but booming ad medium
Well, the physical world is the last place where I still have to see ads. So I guess if you want to appeal to an adblock-using demographic, it might make sense.
