mobiletelephone··on Britain has abandoned its claim to be the world's fifth largest economy
The analogy there is poor.
mobiletelephone··on We Can’t Trust Facebook to Regulate Itself
Actually, Yes I am. If I attend an event, my friends and acquaintances will often upload pictures of me. I do not have a Facebook account, but they are known to operate shadow profiles.
mobiletelephone··on Ford Pilots New Exoskeleton to Help Lessen Chance of Worker Fatigue, Injury
Collect data; build robot.
mobiletelephone··on Zucktown, USA
Wages are high if the supply of labour is low and the employer has money for wages. If supply is low and the employer does not have money, then the job won't exist. This is why tech workers wouldn't benefit from a union very much.
mobiletelephone··on Diminishing returns of static typing
I use a code generator. It has a great type system, it's composable, mature and it can even compile pretty fast with the right tooling. It's called C++!
mobiletelephone··on Show HN: No Coin – A browser extension to block coin miners
No it won't. If everyone is mining more efficiently then the difficulty will rise.
mobiletelephone··on How Many Years of Life Does That House Cost?
Wait... Bournemouth and Dorset!?!?
mobiletelephone··on New AI can guess a person's sexual orientation from a photograph
I also find it ethically troubling. The commercial application is probably advertising.
mobiletelephone··on Wall Street Banks Warn Downturn Is Coming
Another example: products get slightly smaller but remain he same price. Often packaging can hide the change.
mobiletelephone··on Building Reactive Terminal Interfaces in C++
Looks like a few features are still being developed (most notably text input) but it's a good start.
mobiletelephone··on Functions as a Service: Serverless Framework for Docker and Kubernetes
This looks very interesting. Does anyone have any experience with this for C++ functions vs AWS Lambda?
mobiletelephone··on (n+1)sec – a protocol for distributed multiparty chat encryption
Because the threat model is different. Why would your friends and colleagues in a group chat want to tinker with the order of messages? Just trust a sender's timestamp, provided it's within X minutes.
mobiletelephone··on Dammit – should I give up on open source in government
Get the OSS for free and use the money saved to pay a support developer?
mobiletelephone··on The Next Moon Landing Is Near, Thanks to Pioneering Engineers
Does it matter? I think there will be enough qualified candidates who know, understand and are willing to take the risk.
mobiletelephone··on Legalize It All – How to Win the War on Drugs (2016)
Interestingly, the war on drugs has pushed people away from better and cheaper alternatives.
mobiletelephone··on Show HN: A 2D Physics Simulator in JavaScript
Destructive updates are where computing the next step in the simulation destroys or overwrites the previous step.

This is destructive:

    this.position += this.velocity
mobiletelephone··on Show HN: A 2D Physics Simulator in JavaScript
Cool!

Is it deterministic? Does it do destructive updates?

mobiletelephone··on Windows 10 is making too many PCs obsolete
Linux is a better fit for netbooks anyway.
mobiletelephone··on Breaking open the Mt. Gox case, part 1
Magic the Gathering Online Exchange ;)
mobiletelephone··on Decentralized trust graph for online value exchange without a blockchain
Most precious metals are worth more than their industrial applications. I suppose you could say that their value is derived from trust in the stability of their market prices.
mobiletelephone··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
Autonomous cars have benefits beyond being safer, which would explain why the investment outweighs the deaths/year
mobiletelephone··on LWJGL: Lightweight Java Game Library 3
Great library, particularly for beginners who have done a Java 101 course. But why is it being posted now?
mobiletelephone··on Kotlin's hidden costs – Benchmarks
I agree with your conclusion, but it actually could be possible for kotlin to be faster than java for practical purposes, despite running on the JVM. For example, it might be more expressive, allowing the user to give the compiler more information for better optimizations. We see this when C++ is sometimes faster than C.
mobiletelephone··on On C-optimizing compilers removing code that has undefined behavior
Agreed. A modern compiler will pick the optimal assembly (most of the time!)

That said, I feel like C often lacks the expressiveness to properly define intent and allow the compiler to optimise well.

mobiletelephone··on Google just released Lullaby, a C++ library for developing for VR and AR
Looks fairly well organised but it doesn't seem to have a build file!
mobiletelephone··on Ways to dismiss technology
That quote stood out to me too. My question is, if there is a new capability (Bitcoin is a good example) then how do you invest in that capability? Sure you can pick a company working on some application, but they will almost certainly miss the real value of the capability.
mobiletelephone··on 300 miles of secret UK cycle paths have been discovered [audio]
How significant can these routes be given that they were lost?
mobiletelephone··on A quick look at the Ikea Trådfri lighting platform
Any thoughts on PolarSSL?
mobiletelephone··on Adobe Sensei
I gave them 3 paragraphs to explain what this is. I don't know what this is.
mobiletelephone··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
I have a couple of those for outdoor stuff. I find the straps quite uncomfortable.
