moltke··on Embedded Malicious Code in node-ipc
I personally really like the way wasm modules work. The modules all have a particular interface so you know exactly what they can do to the outside world, it's very clean.
moltke··on Using a tiny HC32L110 ARM chip
The truth is very often offensive and being upset by it is the first step in solving the underlying problem. All of us know exactly what the article means by that phrase and everyone (especially the Chinese) would probably be happier if the Chinese (and US) hardware industry was more professional with its software.
moltke··on [dead]
I've switched to Yandex over this (using it as a home page since it looks like the search extension was removed) and am looking at Alexandria. One thing I've noticed is that Yandex video search is actually pretty good.
moltke··on Ask HN: Are Web3 and DApps the Future?
The seller is fine. I don't trust the payment processor to behave.
moltke··on Ask HN: I got into MIT. Should I go?
Z might be bigger, but are the CS class sizes larger? I went to a fairly large university but it had a small CS department and most classes had <25 students which meant you got a lot of attention from your professors. Also keep in mind that CS curricula are more or less standardized by ACM/ABET so the largest differences will be in electives/research projects.

Arguably the most important part is social. You've read SICP and already contribute to OSS so I'll assume you already know you can teach yourself. Understand that modern university is mostly a social thing and less of an educational thing. Look at the clubs on campus and see if you think you'll enjoy them. Most of my friends and a couple people I dated came from the robotics club for example.

Don't underestimate the value of the financial aid. Not having everything paid for can add a lot of stress and once you start getting internships you'll probably want to use the money for side projects/investments/dates etc.

moltke··on Steam to Chrome OS
Regardless, last time I was in Walmart Chromebooks where the only laptop available. For better or worse (mostly worse IMO) as far as a large portion of the population is concerned "regular laptops" are specialized equipment that they won't have.
moltke··on Windows needs a change in priorities
Reason driven decision making is better than data driven decision making.
moltke··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
I comment on technical threads that I'm interested in as well.
moltke··on Ask HN: Are Web3 and DApps the Future?
I use crypto to pay for things even though it's more expensive. I just like having the option to not need to trust anyone.
moltke··on Google will soon ask Australian users to show ID to view some content
The incentives of the two organizations are aligned. It makes sense and is very unfortunate that they capitulate so easily. It's yet another example of why you shouldn't rely on anything from Google.
moltke··on Inflation is a disease (1978) [video]
Right. Inflation makes your rent go up which for most working people is already significantly higher than their taxes.
moltke··on War on free speech: Politicians and commentators label war critics “traitors”
They're not the reason for most of the homicides for example. Minorities can, in fact, cause a majority of certain problems.
moltke··on FOSS devs are burning out, quitting, and even sabotaging their own projects
Phoning home at all is absolutely unacceptable.
moltke··on Kremlin: Many people in Russia are behaving like traitors
I don't know why we're sending equipment there. It will only prolong and potentially escalate the war, killing more people (Ukrainians in particular.)
moltke··on How did Europe become the richest part of the world?
That's not unique to Europe though.
moltke··on How did Europe become the richest part of the world?
The West has more than paid back the people of those nations with the amount we've given them via social programs (immigrants and the races that were formerly slaves are the largest consumers of these by quite a margin) and foreign aid (without which many of those nations would probably cease to exist.)
moltke··on Microsoft Allegedly Breached
Maybe now people will understand why local user accounts are important... who am I kidding things are just going to keep getting worse.
moltke··on How Zillow's homebuying scheme lost $881M
Maybe stop bringing in a million people a year.
moltke··on Ask HN: I need help using TruthSocial.com
I know they're using Mastodon, did they disable federation?
moltke··on A Manifesto for the Metaverse
You barely need crypto. Ticket authentication would be enough.
moltke··on Xmake and C/C++ Package Management
I still don't understand what's wrong with writing eg spec files and letting yum/rpm manage the packages. That's what we do where I work.
moltke··on War on free speech: Politicians and commentators label war critics “traitors”
You know full well that's not what people are upset about CRT for.

We're told from every direction (pastors, educators, advertisments, people like you) that White people are the worst thing to happen to the earth and they're the reason for most of the problems in the US. It's insane, it's unacceptable, and it has to stop.

moltke··on US schools can subscribe to an electric bus fleet at lower prices than diesel
I think car usage is likely to go up unless the crime in cities is dealt with. For that to happen we have to stop calling constructive peace keeping work "racist" though and that seems unlikely.
moltke··on Why Blockchain is not going to be the next big thing?
I use it to pay for DNS and my phone bill, it works very well for periodic payments especially for experimental digital products (I get VOIP service from a Canadian startup that got kicked off paypal.)

I really like the idea of having an "ssh for money" even if its less fast. Early this year a bank randomly closed my account for no reason without telling me and mailed the contents to my sister's house in a cashiers check.

moltke··on Documenting Sony Memory Stick
I used to do embedded firmware, we actually had micro sdcard labels. The other thing I did was keep mine on a sticky note and label the space around them.
moltke··on Small subgroups of the population seem much larger to many Americans
If they keep pushing this crap it's going to make people bigoted. Sometimes I wonder if that's their goal.
moltke··on Asahi Linux alpha release
Distro devs don't maintain drivers, kernel devs do that. That's part of why embedded firmware authors like Linux: you get a ton of drivers for free with minimal effort.
moltke··on How Zillow's homebuying scheme lost $881M
Then we should absolutely stop and do our best to reverse immigration. Under your model immigration is how 3rd world countries export their unsustainable behavior.
moltke··on Software is no longer sold; it's adopted
It always was; the "software market" was always fake.
moltke··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
The truth is that normal people like abusive software. Using software that gives them freedom also gives them the responsibility to understand the behavior of the machine which is something they do not want. No amount of evangelism or possibly even education will fix this. IMO for their own good people who behave this way should not be allowed to use computers and should delegate the task to people who are willing to think through the consequences of using a particular piece of software.

Allowing normal people to use computers is cruel in the same way making a dog order its food over the telephone is.
