mongol··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
Probably Tom Scott

mongol··on Executable Is a SQLite Database
So where does this lead to? Is it leading us towards SQLite as some kind of alternative container image format? Because the benefit seems to only occur when it incorporates dependencies
mongol··on Asus Bike Booster
Have a look at Bafang or Tongsheng kits
mongol··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
No country is "perfect" in this regard, just as no human is perfect. It often strikes me as ironic how people label an entire country or a people as racist, immediately showing their own level of generalization and ability to apply prejudice.
mongol··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
You can be a net positive one day, next day you lose your job and are not. On the other hand, permanent is supposed to be without end. An unemployed worker with no language skills in the local language quickly becomes a burden

Residency while employed is rational. If you want to stay longer, learn the language

mongol··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
No, permanent residency is more than a business deal. It is a deal about all aspects of life, business or not.
mongol··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
Oh yes, we take him very seriously. He has started two wars just this year.
mongol··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
Trolling or not, we take it seriously when the US threatens our territorial sovereignity (speaking as a European 100 percent behind Denmark)
mongol··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
I use to shop at Lidl. As you say, they carry a limited SKU assortment. But I have found it doesn't really matter. When I go to a grocery store that carries more variety, it feels exciting, but in the end it makes no difference. As long as I can get the essentials, I will manage. I don't need 20 types of hamburger dressing. I can make my own from first principles. I don't need 40 types of yoghurt. I buy can natural and eat with fresh fruit. And so on.

Lidl also has this interesting approach that they rotate some assortment. You can't find everything all the time. But once you realize that certain things periodically come back, you pick them up when they are in stock to make sure you have them at home. It is not as convenient, but if you make it a habit, it is a very minor disadvantage.

mongol··on Ask HN: What surprised you about Estonia e-Residency and running an Estonian OÜ?
If you are Russian, you have something to do with Russia
mongol··on Renting a sewing machine from the library
I am not very fond of this idea. I think libraries are for books, or possibly media. I can see the utility but I think it distracts from the actual purpose.
mongol··on The American World Cup Introduced Ad Breaks–and Everyone Hates It
This makes sense. Most people would prefer to do business with a company they know about slnce before. You need to put "I recognize this, this is familiar" into prospective customers' brains. Then later marketing can convince you it is the right choice for your savings.
mongol··on The American World Cup Introduced Ad Breaks–and Everyone Hates It
This is probably the most disruptive change that has been introduced to the sport. Every world cup has introduced something new, such as yellow / red cards, 3 points for victory, goal line technology, VAR, and so on. This year there is a time limit until you must perform a throw-in, among other things. But also these "hydration breaks". I think they have crossed a line. It is so obviously not for the benefit of the game itself.
mongol··on KDE at 30
No it is not just a picture, it is also a descriptive text and specific emojis attached. I don't think anyone would have raised an eye if it was just for the picture.
mongol··on Blue Origin's New Glenn blows up during static fire test
What were the high profile failures in the Apollo program that proves your point?
mongol··on Show HN: A modern Music Player Daemon based on Rockbox firmware
If anyone is looking for opensource software that actually streams to multiple clients, check out Snapcast.
mongol··on EU Age Control: The trojan horse for digital IDs
For one thing, it increases resilience in the event of outages. It is a tangible aspect - just like citizens are encouraged to keep cash at home at least in my country (Sweden)
mongol··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
Awful how?
mongol··on Linux 7.1 Removes Drivers for Bus Mouse Support
What is a bus mouse? Is it using the old PS/2 port?
mongol··on Hyperscalers have already outspent most famous US megaprojects
Indeed. Or for that matter, electrification?
mongol··on Trump says 'a whole civilization will die tonight' if Iran does not make a deal
It can always get worse. Trump ordering nuclear strikes will make it much worse than it has been been so far, by a large margin
mongol··on Trump says 'a whole civilization will die tonight' if Iran does not make a deal
Palestine doesn't exist, from Israel's point of view.

To accuse parent of lying is taking it much too far

mongol··on Trump says 'a whole civilization will die tonight' if Iran does not make a deal
1 is least bad. Maybe not for Iran, but for the world. If Trump re-opens Pandora's box, there is much less to hold back other nuclear powers in similar circumstances. The US has lost some dozen troops in this war, Russia has lost hundreds of thousands in its. Why should Russia restrain themselves if the US president goes mental? Our world becomes much, much more dangerous if Trump becomes unable to control himself.
mongol··on Trump says 'a whole civilization will die tonight' if Iran does not make a deal
Do you mean tactical weapons on strategic targets? Or strategical weapons?

I honestly don't know what to believe, but I feel the doomsday clock is getting closer to midnight than in a long, long time

mongol··on Two pilots dead after plane and ground vehicle collide at LaGuardia
True. But to avoid 1 minute unavailability per year requires 99.9999 % availability
mongol··on Migrating to the EU
I was expecting you might have a relevant example that applies to this discussion.
mongol··on Migrating to the EU
So what? Can you point to a real example where this has been abused or are we discussing hypotheticals?
mongol··on Migrating to the EU
In Hungary, sure. But each country has its own jurisdiction.
mongol··on Migrating to the EU
Sweden is a country like this. It is just the way it is here. It can be abused, sure. But all things considered, I much rather have my things hosted here than in the US.
mongol··on Italy, Belgium set to lose gas supply after biggest LNG plant bombed
Discussing whose fault it is does not change the fact that a statement such as "we do manage quite well to use green energy for heating during winter in Sweden" is quite questionable. The electricity prices ARE high and they would be significantly lower if we had not decommissioned half of our nuclear reactors
