monk_grilla··on OpenSSH 10.6p2 has been released with a workaround for a critical vulnerability
Agreed, I think all the tells you identified are correct. It is really off-putting to me still.
monk_grilla··on Search for everyone
90% of my maps usage happens on my phone, so an iOS app is my top need to give it a proper try.

I guess the biggest problem is and will always be the quality of data. The reason I can't use CoMaps much is because OSM just doesn't have the same accuracy and recency of data on businesses and POIs in my area as compared to Google/Apple.

It is like the line that investors want to go up has moved another derivative down.

Velocity is not enough, acceleration is not enough, we now require jerk to go up.

monk_grilla··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
It would have to be against the wall basically to not cause a problem right? You couldn't reach anything that is between a large object and the wall, because the lines would hit the object

Thanks for the fun read.

My takeaways are to redouble my efforts to vet software I rely on, and to appreciate my distros more. It looks like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and possibly many others had quietly spotted and resolved the issue in their distributions even before this bug report.

monk_grilla··on AMD expects to outsell Intel in Q4 for the first time in history
Why must every company pivot to squeeze what they can out of every tech trend at the expense of everything else they do?

AMD makes excellent CPUs and GPUs, I'm ecstatic with the products I have purchased from them, and they are now beating their biggest competitor and profiting billions every year. What more do you want? Isn't this enough for a company in 2026?

monk_grilla··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
My only problem with it is that it couldn't pick up things near larger things, right? Like a dog toy on the ground beside a couch, the cables would intersect with the couch. As far as I can see it would only work in relatively clear, low-furniture rooms, which severely limits its usefulness.
monk_grilla··on Anthropic's growth just flattened
Astra is not the OpenAI analogue to Opus 5.5. Sol 6.1 is.
monk_grilla··on Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen
This is a really useful and succinct explanation, I'll be using it, thanks!
monk_grilla··on AI fan wikis riddled with errors are muddying the waters of games culture
Post-AI?
monk_grilla··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
Not sure about the US experience, but here in Australia there are no dumb TVs for sale in our retail electronics stores. Every TV comes with some sort of "smart" OS.
monk_grilla··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
Oh that sucks, definitely more annoying to separate then. But still I think this is unlikely to kill the project.
monk_grilla··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
Thanks, this should be the top comment. I think literally no-one in this thread bothered to translate or read the article lol.
monk_grilla··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
I wouldn't "kill" anyone though right? They just block French IPs and forget about it?
monk_grilla··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
Yup exactly. My analogue would be the `turtle` library in Python. In fact when I started teaching kids Python that was what I reached for, the level up over the bee!
monk_grilla··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Hmm ok. I'll keep an eye out. New chassis is interesting and no notch is cool. I don't care for the touchscreen idea at all.
monk_grilla··on Herdr has released native app
Agreed. I was really sceptical of it and was in the camp of "tmux does all I need" but it is honestly fantastic and ever since they added the ability to access multiple ssh machines from one herdr session I just live inside it.
monk_grilla··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
I don't think this counts as takesies backsies. This incident clearly followed the code is law principle, the whole point is that a majority forms the chain of truth. In this case, a majority decided to splinter and use a different chain where the incident never occurred.

As far as I understand blockchain, that is the system working as intended. Some nodes choose to run Ethereum Classic and some choose to run Ethereum. Isn't that the whole point? Decentralisation?

monk_grilla··on Genie 4
You are a shell of a human being.
monk_grilla··on Genie 4
Yes this is right. Something about the way it works under the hood means it wants: 1. bust falls 2. it crushes the watermelon 3. it teeters 4. it settles on the plinth. It is sort of interpolating between these states, which it feels are a realistic sequence of events, not actually attempting to model what would happen in a real "world".
monk_grilla··on Genie 4
If only there was some way we could create some sort of arrangement of 3D models and place a virtual camera within the arrangement. We could introduce some physics simulation and make the position of the virtual camera move and render what it sees to the user.

If such a system were possible, it seems like it would be far better at consistency and realism, since it could be fine tuned and hand crafted to best represent the desired world. It could be used to make interactive experiences, games, perhaps even feature films!

Alas.

monk_grilla··on Genie 4
> It's very good at maintaining consistency for things that stay in frame

I noticed several inconsistencies in things that stayed in frame. See the wall on the bridge in the Van Gogh example as they walk past it to see the other side.

I must be out of the loop, you skimmed over this. A Mac with a touchscreen??

monk_grilla··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Does DisplayLink work?
monk_grilla··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Also M1 Pro here. Any reason why you're planning to upgrade at M7 Pro? I still don't feel the need to upgrade, as much as I wish I could justify it.

I like to factory reset my devices every couple of years, it really gives them a new lease on life. My M1 Pro feels as smooth and fast as the day I got it.

monk_grilla··on JetBrains Thinkrail
Such an idiotic take. You can't possibly have ever built anything yourself that you actually cared about. If you had, you would know what you're saying makes no sense at all.
monk_grilla··on What goes into making an animated film?
The fact that someone can honestly say this is anywhere near the level of any professional animation is truly baffling.

Just the first two shots alone are full of horrible, stilted and morphing animation, no consistency between shots, no particular art style at all.

This is not a creative work or art in any form I recognise.

monk_grilla··on Why I Am a Programmer
Do you have any advice for loving the job as it is today?

I grew up programming and being obsessed with computers too, though in a very different world. I started working full time as a programmer this year and I haven't written a line of code. I just set the agent going and read reminiscent posts on HN like this about how great things used to be.

I feel like most of what I loved about programming has disappeared just as I truly began.

I guess I should have clarified that I meant a robot made to look like a bee...

These were a rite of passage here in Australia for any kid who showed an interest in maths or computers.

You brought me back to hand-drawing platformer puzzle levels for my fictional game as a kid. Good times.
