monkin··on Hoodmaps: Publicly Annotated City Maps
You can disable location sharing in the browser for every site and never see that popup again. Why is this such a big problem?
monkin··on Show HN: Meet.hn – Meet the Hacker News community in your city
It would be more useful to have a button in each city to propose a meeting—no need to email anyone. You suggest a meeting, people can join or propose changes. That's it. :<
monkin··on Show HN: Meet.hn – Meet the Hacker News community in your city
Nice! You could add a feature to organize and host a meeting or contact people in some way. :-)
monkin··on We've built the Ultimate e-Bike Battery that you can Repair and Refill
> Proudly powering 1500+ rental bikes Since 2022, Gouach Infinite Battery has powered free-floating fleets in the roughest environments: snow, rain, heat, cold, shocks. Now that we have figured out the perfect battery, we want the public to access it.

It doesn't look like a scam to me. What's wrong with the app?

monkin··on iPhone is not as private as you might think
I'm just commenting on using situation to boost their sales, engagement, and that specific quote. Nothing wrong in this. But they had a fair share of controversies around them too. As each one of those "privacy first" companies, and don't get me wrong it's not a bad thing.
monkin··on iPhone is not as private as you might think
> Apple’s marketing team has built a powerful association between the iPhone and privacy. The company’s ad campaigns claim that “what happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone.” And, “Privacy. That’s iPhone.”

The same thing goes for Proton as their entire business and marketing is based on selling privacy and fearmongering. Even this blog post is about selling services and they always write about it when Apple is getting hit by something and talked about. ;-)

monkin··on [dead]
It's just an undisclosed advertisement
monkin··on Apple hit with over 1.8B euro EU antitrust fine in Spotify case
As for me, Spotify could cease to exist. With each passing year, they become even more unusable. Now, even music recommendations are turning into rubbish. Not to mention the UI experiments...
monkin··on Rotten Apple
> With all sincerity, fuck you and fuck everybody who thinks like you.

Thank you.

monkin··on Rotten Apple
Never seen high-profile politician with an Android device.
monkin··on Rotten Apple
I wonder how the EU will respond when high-ranking politicians fall victim to third-party app store scams or experience significant data leaks exploited through other browsers. Given that they're not particularly tech-savvy, it raises questions about their preparedness for such situations, and who they will blame for it.
monkin··on Groq runs Mixtral 8x7B-32k with 500 T/s
It's impressive, but I have one problem with all of those models. I wanted them to answer what Mixtral or Llama2 are, but with no luck. It would be great if models could at least describe themselves.
monkin··on Tell HN: Hard to change default search engine in Chrome to DuckDuckGo
That's weird. The first thing you encounter when starting a clean Chrome is choosing the default search engine, and DuckDuckGo is on the list.
monkin··on It’s Official, Apple Kills Web Apps in the EU
You can code on it, design, edit photos, write books, sketch, edit videos... and a lot more with ease. For 3 years, I used only an iPad for work. Can you expand on your problems? Or was that a "it works differently on my beloved OS" kind of thing?
monkin··on YC: Requests for Startups
Everyone who values what Garry can bring to the table, so probably 99% of applicants. ;-)
monkin··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
It's not that bad either. You can use Ergo as an IRC server, and The Lounge as a client to provide a pleasant experience for small teams without the setup hassle.
monkin··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
Toxic? I sit mostly in tech/product servers, so I didn't spot that, but maybe you're right about places that are just "general".
monkin··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
From my experience, most questions and answers are asked and solved in forum channels, which are quite easy to search for anything you need.
monkin··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
I think Discord has had a huge impact on Stack Overflow as there are many communities created for specific technologies, languages, frameworks, or topics, where most users can get answers from direct contributors or people who have the best industry knowledge on the topic in question.

Not to mention how beneficial it is for brands and products to create such closely-knit communities for their users. There's no need to Google things or ask on SO, as one can chat in real time and go back and forth for solutions with other users.

monkin··on Ask HN: As a developer, do you consider the carbon footprint of your apps?
Looks like a new term for website optimisation? Which, more or less, anyone building anything online should do anyway. But forcing any environmental meaning behind in doesn't feel right.

It's like sorting waste that will end up in the general landfill.

monkin··on Web Push for Web Apps on iOS and iPadOS
I think that more likely no one cares about this beside few tech-savvy users and they don't need a guide to do it.
monkin··on macOS Command Line
This resource is great, but the saddest part is removing it from GitHub. I think it will hugely hit its visibility and create more of low quality copycats. For example, I rarely use my bookmarks or even check them out, but I constantly use my categorized GitHub stars to read the content I need. I suspect I’m not the only one doing it like this.
monkin··on Design Gifts: 50% off a yearly Sketch plan
It’s still the best native UI design tool for macOS.

And $99 per year is a great price for someone who uses it daily for design work, not so much for hobbyists. They could make a plan without all that cloud & collaboration stuff for halve of that price, but 50% off is still a good offer. :-)

monkin··on Emacs on an iPad
I’m doing all my development in the cloud for the last two years and never had any latency problems whatsoever.

And it’s not about feature comparison to a laptop, even with a keyboard as MacBook Air M2 is better and cheaper than iPad. But easy content consumption, taking notes, sketching, writing, and many others. It’s just more fun than a heavy laptop. But yes, it’s not for everyone as using it full-time requires a change in personal habits. There’s also not much pro apps, but for now you can produce videos, music, cad designs, web design (figma, adobe, serif), so it’s not so limiting as it was years ago.

monkin··on Emacs on an iPad
A lot of companies are moving into development in cloud, for example GitHub. Which is a future for many use cases, and for which iPad is an ideal device to work with.

> And you then still have to deal with keyboard issues....

What kind of issues?

monkin··on Emacs on an iPad
I, for example, read Books on iPad when there’s no connection, but with a cellular version that isn’t common. Yet, having mosh connection inside Blink is a blessing exactly for that purpose as I’m always going back to my stuff on desktop.
monkin··on Emacs on an iPad
Just to note: Blink Shell comes with built in image support.
monkin··on Affinity 2
I love Affinity, but why on earth there’s no Hand tool in Designer on iPad? It is so frustrating to work with mouse and keyboard.
