mono··on The Mac Pro from an audio pros perspective
"It looks like a Dyson vacuum cleaner someone lifted from the maintenance closet on the Death Star."
mono··on Google images takes over fullsize content
Quote: 'The source page will no longer load up in an iframe in the background of the image detail view.'

Protest is growing as the traffic to the source sites heavily decreases (see the comments section).

I would have chosen this on the top of the list!

mono··on Another Ridiculous Software Patent - Location Based Search
Thanks for this funny read. The announcement sounds like they invented LBS last week.
mono··on "Take a Photo; It’ll Last Longer"
Simply ask yourself:

What did you feel in the last time when you followed a link and the result was one of these filtered images?

Evolution will overcome this. We still drink water.

mono··on "Take a Photo; It’ll Last Longer"
You miss a point: When you take an image in the way of preview and shot, your image is like you felt it should be (or not).

Paste it over by a click and this feeling is disassociated from your pic (or as the author states: not real).

mono··on Firefox Add-ons with the Slowest Start-up
I'm using the web-developer add-on without this impact. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/web-developer...
mono··on Ask HN: Am I the only one who can't create a startup at the weekend?
Completely agree. "Weekend" projects don't come up when you wake up on Saturday morning and are ready for sale on Monday.

My comment was caused as I observe an increasing number of these "weekend" or "side-project" messages at HN. For me it looks like the authors are too cautious to stand for their project as something that took all their attention and that still may have mistakes.

What follows is an inflationary trend that most "Show HN" posts are declared as minute-jobs and we lose the open culture of a showroom, where the other mates take your work serious and try to positively criticise it. Not long, and we have sidecars only.

I think it is not important how long one needs for a project shown here. The message transported with the timeline is else "look I'm a genious" or "sorry, all the remaining bugs are from a lack of time".

I have to remark, that I don't think of any particular posts in the last time and I know that I may include projects in my generalization that don't deserve it. This hasn't been my intention. And my original confession to be a bad hacker is still valid!

mono··on Gawker’s Gulp Moment: Big Redesign Is Driving People Away
The SiteMeter graph is irrelevant too as they didn't add the SiteMeter.js.
mono··on Python Stuff
Beside one JSON interpreter from 2011 all the stuff there is 4 years and older. Not the most actual source for Python on Mac...
mono··on Awesome-Fontstacks: free web fonts with failsafes to back them up
It would be nice, to have a list of all fonts longer than 5 incrementals. As the bundles are more or less random, I don't think that searching is more important than browsing.
mono··on Awesome-Fontstacks: free web fonts with failsafes to back them up
I shouted out a long "hurray" when I realized what you had done. Is there something I miss, or why all the comments are so cautious? What's wrong with webfonts and the packages you create?
mono··on How to Beat Procrastination
Accept Procrastination as a different way to do something!

There is a brilliant 4 minute movie about it all:

mono··on 'Don’t ignore your stupid ideas.'
Not shown: 1000s of goofy lifes have been saved from this app.
mono··on Redis: the AK-47 of databases
The total number of the AK-type rifles made worldwide during the last 50 years is estimated at 90+ millions. Does the title implies that Redis will handle this amount of values too?
mono··on Introducing Amazon Simple Email Service
plus: Everything you need to own, you buy at Amazon (rhymes!)
mono··on How to Create A Startup in Japan (In 10 Easy Steps)
Thanks for this post and the funny title. Main lesson: take your business serious but focus on more than this. "The great path has no gate". -Masanobu Fukuoka
mono··on Delegate or die: the self-employed trap
No need to read the article. The title is all you need to know!
mono··on Are European start-ups lazy?
Perhaps not lazy but ignored...
mono··on Apache Pivot 2.0 released

mono··on Ask HN: Strategy for app release
I would suggest to post a descriptive link here?
mono··on Web Services Our Startup Relies On Every Day
Thanks for this long version! Might learn to stop trying to maintain every solution on myself.
mono··on Web Services Our Startup Relies On Every Day
Wow. Looks like you have outsourced every imaginable job when there's a webservice for it. Are you doing this because of bad experiences when servicing your own or did you do this from the start? Did you compare the running costs/reliability between outsourcing and self administration with a positive result into outsourcing?
mono··on Why Google is not winning in Russia - and unexpected search comparison results
Great article about language as the last man standing against globalism. If you ever have to manage the translation of a piece of software into a different language, you will find two kinds: One in western chars where you can get a feeling about the translators work and one in different chars like russian, japanese, chinese, arabic where you don't get a ghost of idea what is written there.

For search engines this is much harder: if you don't employ a sufficient numbers of native speakers for these languages, you will never get sufficient results. All other employees can't help you out. Translation software is useless, if you don't know how to weight the possible results from the cultural canon. A cyrillic reader expects to find the russian state library on top when looking for a lib, not the library of congress.

mono··on US Patent system so dysfunctional you can patent a stick from a tree
If you're in need of a good startup idea: Claim a patent for crossing fingers to build a luck generator.
mono··on Space Invaders: Why you should never, ever use two spaces after a period
Two spaces is so long ago, that as an europaen I even didn't know, you can do this. Big cultural gap!
