monorailz··on Why I stopped hacking the Amazon Dash button and learned to solder
You have a typo (well two, really), their name is Octavo Systems.

I hadn't heard of them before, I just noticed the link you posted said octavosystems.com in the url, not octavio.

monorailz··on FreeBSD Myths
Maybe DesktopBSD? http://www.desktopbsd.net/ I dunno, I haven't used it but others have said that it's a simple install.

I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad to run a FreeBSD laptop and don't feel that the amount of work I had to do to get it to a useful state was all that different from the amount of work with Fedora on my desktop computer but I've been using both FreeBSD and various Linux distros for several years and don't know your amount of previous experience with either FreeBSD or Linux so YMMV.

monorailz··on List of IPython Notebooks by Peter Norvig
Thank you both, that makes sense.

In the linked notebook http://nbviewer.jupyter.org/url/norvig.com/ipython/Countdown... when he says

>because there are 2 ways to make 27 with the numbers (10, 9, 8), namely, ((10+9)+8) and (10+(9+8))

why not also (10+9+8)?

Absolutely interesting. I'd change the title from "IPython from Peter Norvig" to "IPython Notebooks by Peter Norvig", though.

Thanks for the reply. Hope I will have time to join the hangout.

That removed the plus signs. Thanks! :)
monorailz··on Barliman: Prototype of a smart text editor
What will the expected level of prerequisite knowledge be for participating in the hangout?

I don't find it that improbable to think it may have been typed into the wrong page by the user. If you open a lot of HN discussion pages first and then open the articles they link to via the discussion pages in new tabs and you switch to read an article (like I do) and you then go back to comment on it, I can see how someone ends up commenting in the wrong thread. Especially, I think, it would be easy to make that mistake if you have a strong opinion about the matter of the article because if you get worked up and eager to say something about it, you might be more focused on the comment entry box and not notice that the title and other comments don't match.
monorailz··on Bringing HSTS to www.google.com
I use the biggest newspaper website in the country I am from since they don't have any TLS at all yet.

I have mutt configured to open the html email in lynx and dump the text. Lynx is a terminal browser and does not support images and does not execute javascript. Prior to configuring mutt this way, I frequently encountered the kind of bad content you talk about in mail, but now I get the content and can still feel safe. I am still vulnerable to HTML parsing bugs in lynx, but I don't think the risk of anyone targeting lynx is all that big.

To read and send mail, I ssh to my mail server and use mutt there. For the most part it works great, except when I receive links I need to visit longer than about 70 characters because then I have to copy the URL in parts rather than all at once due to the plus signs inserted by mutt to indicate that the line continues.

Thank you. Paying it forward by putting the link here.

The archive.org capture linked elsewhere ITT has more details, including more pictures and a couple of videos.

monorailz··on GNU Unifont Glyphs
I haven't checked Unifont but generally, zero with a slash has the slash only on the inside of the zero, whereas o with a slash, as you, being danish, know, but others might not, has the slash extending beyond each side. If Unifont has the slash going outside, then I agree with you, that is offensive, but if it does not, then it's fine.
monorailz··on Facebook's News Feed
The kind of mobile ad blockers that work on the system level require root permissions afaiaa. Meanwhile, uBlock Origin is available on Firefox for Android, but being a Firefox extension, does not have the possibility of blocking traffic in other apps.

The amount of people who have rooted Android devices are probably far lower than the likely-also-low number of people using in-browser ad blockers on Android. For iOS devices, the number of people with jailbroken devices I would guess to be lower in relative percentage than on Android. I don't know if even just in-browser adblocking is possible on iOS at all without jailbreaking.

Anyway, point is, while ad blocking might be relatively wide-spread on the desktop among all people (why else would media bother to spend valuable developer time implementing ad blocker blockers?), in-app ad blocking probably is much less common and that's what fb benefits from.
