Same thing that blocks you from most things: capital. That’s what capitalism is for.
moomin··on Shitter – A Nitter Fork
Then reasons no longer matter to you.
moomin··on Shitter – A Nitter Fork
I've reached the point where I go "If it's on Twitter I don't need to know". We'll all reach that point eventually.
moomin··on EA is shutting down BioWare
Nah, ME3 is pretty poor throughout. Almost every mission feels anodyne and flat, the skill balancing is way off. There’s still some decent writing though.

People go on about the ending but never really address the whiplash of revealing a third party at the finale. It’s not a question of Shepherd survives or not, it’s that even with all the changes they made, it just doesn’t feel like it has very much to do with what’s gone on before.

moomin··on The reverts will continue until morale improves
I’ve experienced this myself. I’ve had to downgrade my opinion of my own code. LLMs are great at pointing out the edge cases that you might have taken years to find. Honestly feels quite dispiriting but we move on.
moomin··on Were Software Engineers blue-collar workers all along?
I've remarked on this before: IT Departments seem practically designed to obfuscate the actual cost of development. The discourse online very rarely has numbers against it. My theory as to why this is is that firms really don't want devs to know how much they budget for a dev, and so they structure the organisation to hide that information.
moomin··on Mxc: Microsoft Execution Containers version 1.0.0
I’ve had a good think about this, and while it’s good to see them finally answering bubblewrap, the truth is that we as an industry have been ridiculously at permissioning for some time and this does not solve this. It’s all very well saying we have read only resource access, but then you connect up to JIRA and all of a sudden you’ve got a different identity system, different resource model and and more complexity than you can shake a stick at.

Our current answer of just making the security model more and more complex isn’t working. It just means that, when things inevitably fail, we can say “well, they didn’t secure it correctly”. When even describing what is correct is hard, and setting it up is harder.

Honestly, this looks good, but we need a root and branch rethink of security if we want something that can protect us from rogue agents.

moomin··on Theranos.world
I’d forgotten there was a time when “Tesla fan” didn’t feel like a political statement.
moomin··on Theranos.world
I recall there were plenty of people on here going into bat for Theranos way after others were calling it fraud.

The thing is, she expertly rode a belief system that was already prevalent: that SV was going to change the world and that SV and what was happening there was different. Plenty of WeWork fans as well. Plenty of fans of firms that actually did something as well, but most of those "did something"s were a website.

moomin··on Mistral Large 4
Someone actually tried this and found no evidence of pelicanmaxxing.
moomin··on JetBrains reports revenue growth, net financial loss for 2025
Oh, they don't need a reason to let the core product stagnate. They've been doing that for years.
moomin··on Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Is a Fucking Doozy
I recently tripped the safeguards by referring to a fake deployment tool. I started referring to it as a virtual one and it was fine.
moomin··on GPT-6.1 Sol replaces GPT-6 Sol after just 7 days, with near-Astra intelligence
This has got to be a panic move from OpenAI, right? They’ve had some bad press lately because from their billing changes, and Anthropic have finally released a fast, relatively cheap Opus with improved written English.
moomin··on Grok 4.7
It’s not just that it was generated, it’s that they argued in court, _and won_, that it was legal, giving every last predator a nigh-on unverifiable defence.
moomin··on Brood War Bench
Wondering what it would look like if you allowed them to write scripts. You could throttle the number of clicks to make it interesting.
moomin··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
Pretty sure Gödel’s theorems imply the halting problem if you squint hard enough.
moomin··on If materialism is true, the United States is probably conscious
Pretty sure this is basically the plot to Tales of Arise.
moomin··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Honestly, Picard asked a very relevant question to the modern age. What if our societal standards aren't what we thought they were, and we've just had rose-tinted glasses convincing ourselves otherwise. Of course, we never saw them actually deal with that properly, but S1 was a much more interesting series than S2 and S3 were.
moomin··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Look, I do not have a scooby if current AI models are conscious and I strongly suspect it’s a meaningless question, but sooner or later we will need to address whether or not a certain thing is or isn’t a person, and we’d better not screw it up as badly as the Founding Fathers.
moomin··on Java 27
C# dev here: it’s amazing how different this is from a Microsoft release. First off, Oracle are doing versions at approximately twice the cadence. But also, and I’m guessing this is a function of the much larger Java audience: things rarely get two preview versions in a proper release. Updates in beta versions, yes, all the time. It also feels like Microsoft are bundling a lot more into the platform and leaving less to the community. Again, probably an artifact of the different sizes of the communities. Also, the page reads like an open source “We’re finished, we’re tired.” announcement rather than the razzmatazz of a Microsoft release.
moomin··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Indeed, with the best will in the world, nothing on X is that essential. XCancel is the only way I read it.
moomin··on LRU is harder to beat than the KV-cache papers suggest
It is. And the reason for that is* surprising: the base knowledge corpus is clickbait internet articles.

moomin··on Cognition launches new SWE-2 model, Rivaling Fable 5.1 and GPT-Astra
A lot of people seem to be the Antichrist these days. I’d have though we’d get a lull after the millennium but it’s all the rage.
moomin··on iPhone Duo
You’ve just described why people have a phone.
moomin··on iPhone Duo
Not something I have strong opinions on, but probably something by Garmin. (Remember them? They’re still around and shockingly successful.)

Check whether any device you’re looking at requires a subscription.

moomin··on iPhone Duo
The problem is, health is easily the biggest thing in wearables. The problem for Apple is their health stuff isn’t up to snuff with their competitors.
moomin··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Yes, but is it a load-bearing seam?
moomin··on The turbulent AI era is here
Whilst the objections you raise are valid, in the face of the country being destroyed if you don’t, the equation’s rather different. What does it matter if China is dominant if you’re better off living in the US?
moomin··on VMs won't contain cyber-capable agents
I don’t think the post claims magical abilities. Just that most things are already crackable given public knowledge and LLMs can exploit those. Worse, that the rate at which we update security issues is too slow to keep up with “knowing about a problem is equivalent to having a working exploit”.
moomin··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Problem with that is so few of them are repairable these days. Laptops just kind of fall apart over time.
