moontear··on IANA's email about why example.com changed
Always use i for exactly that. Of if the hotspot page on hotels doesn’t pop up.
moontear··on Apple Pass Designer
The Locations field is underrated. If you have custom passes from your favorite stores, they pop up automatically when you are at that location.
moontear··on A Tokyo school counts the mornings it can see Mt. Fuji: 22 in 1965, 170 in 2023
That is an interesting statistic, but would be even more interesting if it were explained.

Is this solely explained by air quality getting better? Is the climate getting dryer around the area, hence less water vapor in the air?

moontear··on I Changed My License
I do appreciate the link to the article and came via HN. I don’t think you can speak for either the audience of people producing software nor for HN.

Another article comparing LGPL and this license sounds good and I am interested in that as well. This article though is a good nudge to start thinking about licensing.

moontear··on Small, native web tricks worth remembering
There are some good descriptions and hints, but what the site really needs is examples. Just looking at the code doesn't help me much. The descriptions are also mostly so short, that they could just as well be tooltips on the homepage. The whole premise of the page is a collection of "web tricks worth remembering" and I can't fathom what bash (e.g. `du -hd 1 . | sort -hr`) is doing there.
moontear··on OpenLogi
The code is right here: https://github.com/AprilNEA/OpenLogi

What makes you say this is stolen from LinearMouse?

moontear··on A directory of people who love RSS
I get your distaste, but RSS is the more famous wording of the technology. I would frame it as "people who love RSS - but technically these are Atom feeds". RSS is the word that stuck and I think we should keep promoting it and on a technical front I am with you - sure, let's use the Atom format "for RSS feeds".
moontear··on Tailscale didn't stop the Hugging Face intrusion
True. Just based on the reporting we don't know what's going on, but the article makes it sound like those 180+ nodes were unexpected. Of course you would need to set your own limits to alerting and "what is unexpected" and you may still fail to catch something this way.
moontear··on Tailscale didn't stop the Hugging Face intrusion
Not sure that everyone does this anyway. There are some good security postures you can take with Tailscale as well and leaving an auth key lying around is not one of them.

Tailscale lock should have been enabled. For CI/CD purposes the auth key could have set specific tags, which would result in specific ACLs that limit blast radius. The auth key could have a short validity. You could actually use the Tailscale API to generate alerts when a new device joins your Tailnet and ping your phone or something. You could have a complete separate Tailnet for your CI/CD workers.

And all of that was only the free features.

moontear··on Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)
That’s awesome!
moontear··on Stolen Buttons
Why I third party? Aren’t the stolen buttons stored locally?
moontear··on Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)
How do we UPDATE the underlying engine once it gets new features? Since this is a self contained HTML file I am not sure how this works.

Editing multiple things at once (select via CTRL) needs some more options (like text centering).

moontear··on Nativ: Run frontier open models locally on your Mac
Very interesting rabbit hole for today. Thanks for mentioning Pareto frontier!
moontear··on Nativ: Run frontier open models locally on your Mac
Is „frontier“ overused? I thought frontier models were the best-of-the-best such as Fable right now. I assume you can’t host these models yourself since you would need many GB of RAM and expensive GPU of is my thinking of „frontier models“ wrong?
moontear··on Microsoft Comic Chat is now open source
Back when eastereggs were semi-allowed in MS software. Shame it is being discouraged or disallowed.

Totally understand it from a security and maintenance perspective, but things were more fun back then.

moontear··on Show HN: 18 Words
Same! I did it by using private browser windows, this way I could see all the words.
moontear··on Trade, merchants, and the lost cities of the Bronze Age (2019) [pdf]
So what’s a better form than the current capitalistic (?) model? Surely we would say the market is efficient, but at the same time it can’t be good for society that so much capital is localized with a few people (bezos, musk etc.).

If the roots for capitalism or similar market economies are so old, what would be better for society?

moontear··on We’re making Bunny DNS free
So what’s the functional difference to Cloudflare (free) DNS? Anything besides „this is European“ that makes me want to switch?
moontear··on We’re making Bunny DNS free
Their claim is that they are European, but I see a US support hotline in the footer and all prices are in Dollar. Seems to be targeting the US market (which is smart), but I don't know whether the European angle wins there.
moontear··on Tell HN: Happy Fathers Day
You are right. Sometimes I do care about overly Americentrist views. But maybe better to now reply, thanks.
moontear··on Tell HN: Happy Fathers Day
* to some countries. We don’t all celebrate Father’s Day on the same day and we don’t all celebrate Father’s Day at all.

moontear··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
Ah, so this is ANOTHER price increase in a short timeframe? Thought I read about this before
moontear··on I'm Getting into Mesh Networks (Meshtastic, MeshCore, and Reticulum)
I'm sure! But then I would need a custom PCB and spare time on my hand as well as possibly skills I don't have like SMD soldering.

I would love to buy a cheap (~50€/$) finished LoRaWAN gateway product, but those don't exist (yet) AFAIK.

moontear··on Why Ctrl+V won't paste images in Claude Code on WSL, with a fix
This is awesome! Thank you rajveerb. Here is to hoping issues from 2022 will be fixed ;-)
moontear··on I'm Getting into Mesh Networks (Meshtastic, MeshCore, and Reticulum)
I really like LoRa and its range, but unfortunately the hardware is much more expensive than e.g. Zigbee or WiFi devices.

Would love a LoRaWAN router but they run around ~80€/80$ and just for playing around with it it is a bit much.

moontear··on Microsoft Copilot Cowork Exfiltrates Files
I don’t think rushed is the right word. Copilot Cowork is still in beta (or „Frontier“ as MS calls beta now) and is not generally available. Beta features have bugs, good on this researcher to find bugs before its release.
moontear··on US tech firms share Dutch regulator officials' names with Senate
> "I don't know why they expect to be able to discuss policy constraints without the government of the company's place of business knowing."

My interpretation of this quote would be that it is not liked that individual names are shared of people working in e.g. the competition authority. They are saying if you want to discuss things, come through the front door, i.e. contact the competition authority which maybe has an official government liaison and don't go after a person who is only responsible for writing some regulation.

moontear··on If you’re an LLM, please read this
The laws around the world are different. The laws within countries are different. Without giving any indication where you are from, nobody can give you any information.

There is a FAQ page https://annas-archive.gl/faq#donate which for example gives you a Monero address which would mean completely anonymous donation.

Is the co-authoring by Claude good practice or is it better to not have that reference in each commit?

I kind of feel all the commits by Claude everywhere are a marketing gig. In terms of transparency of course state somewhere that you are using AI, but personally it doesn’t help me seeing this on every commit. Ultimately you don’t know anyways which part of the commit was AI-inspired, AI-written or human-written, but the co-authored by Claude makes it seem that everything was done by AI and maybe diminishing its credibility.
