mostly_harmless··on Google Removes More Than 11 Million .co.cc Domains From Search Results
maybe I'm just used google's crap, but after using DDG for a week, I found that it gave results that i didnt want more often.

Then again, maybe it is just the interface, Google has a cleaner interface IMO making it easier to see results.

And its also likely that i didnt get used to some of the special additions in DDG like tags and what ever else.

mostly_harmless··on Google+ For iOS Awaiting App Store Approval
That just seems anti-competitory. I wouldn't expect Apple to reject google on the pretext of working with facebook, and I think it would be even more ridiculous for google to actually remove a currently existing app of a competitor.
mostly_harmless··on Google will no longer allow private Google profiles after July 31st
does this mean that you would not be able to make gmail accounts without them being linked to your identity?

How far does this go, and what would be the visible effect on account management with google products?

mostly_harmless··on What Makes the Thunderbolt Cable Lightning Fast
Can anyone explain why the chips need to be inside the cable? why cant they be inside the hosting device port?
mostly_harmless··on Friendster Relaunches
for anyone curious: 'streisanded' refers to the streisand effect http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect
mostly_harmless··on Facebook’s Zuckerberg Is Now Richer Than The Google Guys
I would argue that regardless of who is dubbed 'richer', google and those who made it are still worth way more. Zuckerburg is a one trick pony, with nothing but facebook to keep him afloat. And now that google has started attacking that, I'm sure that a good share of their market is going to be lost;
mostly_harmless··on Google Introduces Facebook Competitor, Emphasizing Privacy
well, personally I would much prefer only google having my information (and using it for google ads or whatever they use it for) than a bunch of unknown third parties.

But that is assuming that google does not pass it off also, which im not quite sure of

mostly_harmless··on Ubuntu Unity usability testing results and analysis
slightly pedantic, but Gnome 3 is the intended successor of Gnome 2 (not its predecessor)
mostly_harmless··on Coffee Joulies: Kickstarter project keeps your coffee at the right temperature
Not quite. They are taking advantage of the fact that matter takes (or releases) a lot more energy when it is changing state(eg. solid to liquid), then when it is simply changing temperature in the same state.

for example, water takes about 75J to heat one mol by 1K. but it takes about 285000J to change one mol of ice to one mol of water

So, they have this lump of metal, that has a core of some other material that presumably changes state at the preferred temperature of coffee. What this means is that when the coffee is hotter than the joulies, the core melts absorbing a lot of energy. Then when the coffee is cooler than the preferred temperature, the core of the joulies re-solidifies, releasing a lot of energy, keeping the coffee warm.

http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html please view the 3rd from the bottom paragraph.

Although, I do agree that this particular link is not as interesting as some I see on here.

mostly_harmless··on Flux: Better Lighting for Your Mac
does anyone have any actual screenshots or examples of the difference?
mostly_harmless··on Neil Gaiman: Why defend freedom of icky speech?
but that is their right to believe what they wish. If they want to believe whole-heartedly in Norse mythology, that is their right to do so. It only becomes an issue once they impose their beliefs on others. It can even be thought that atheism is a religious belief in itself. It explains all the things religion does in a unique way.
mostly_harmless··on Gentoo Linux LiveDVD 11.0 Released
So it's not the year of Linux? Hopefully there will be more interest after Gnome 3 and Ubuntu 11.04 both released in April
mostly_harmless··on Piracy is Theft? Ridiculous. Lost Sales? They Don’t Exist
That was a recent addition to the Terms. What that is referring to is additional DLC once the game is complete. Right now it is in beta. If you own a alpha license, you are guaranteed to receive additional updates free. The idea was that they were afraid of a "Everything in the future is free" clause, so just in case; they added that. There is currently no planned 'bonus updates'
mostly_harmless··on Andreas’ Personal Flying Suit (“Monocopter”) Project
well, for one thing, i dont believe it is a jet turbine. It appears that the thrust is solely produced by a giant propeller.

The gas generator that runs the big fan is probably ventilated well enough not to burn the pilot.

mostly_harmless··on 4chan has been DDOSed
I figured it was a Team Fortress reference. Considering both of the 'agencies' that control the teams are denoted by three letters (BLU, and RED).
mostly_harmless··on Ask HN: How would you invest $50,000?
I would say: get your pilot's license. It seems that you pretty well set, it should be pretty fun to fly. Also a cool conversation point
mostly_harmless··on How Snow Leopard reports drive capacity
what would happen if you format the drive into multiple partitions?
mostly_harmless··on 1998 post about Netscape quoting Marca saying the browser would become an OS.
They got part of it right. Google is making an operating system, but from my understanding, it is no longer solely a browser.
