mr_mitm··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
I found Claude Code to work best. You can use it with any compatible API.
mr_mitm··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
The many worlds are a consequence, not a postulate. It is the Copenhagen interpretation that postulates that all branches but one disappear at measurement.
mr_mitm··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
Yes. Many worlds is just the Schrödinger equation without the wave function collapse. It makes less assumptions. Falsify the Schrödinger equation, and you have falsified many worlds. However, is the wave function collapse falsifiable? It's one postulate which many worlds doesn't make, and it cannot be confirmed or falsified by experiment.

mr_mitm··on Is this the new cyber normal?

mr_mitm··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Were paper straws ever about climate change? This feels like a red herring. Pollution has many aspects to it, and you can work on several problems simultaneously.
mr_mitm··on What shall I teach my son?
School shouldn't be teaching essential life skills. It should inspire and enable young people to go on to achieve great things -- at least some of them. How will we ever get another Newton, Einstein, von Neumann, Noether, etc. if we don't teach all young kids what is possible with math? Calculus arguably transformed our society and is a great showcase of the power of math. It can shape the way we think about things, because this level of precision is rarely needed when thinking about other disciplines.
mr_mitm··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
No, because it may cause the violation of basic human rights of minorities.

However, it is in our democratic right to fight parties that are anti constitutional. It's in the constitution.

mr_mitm··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
> If people dont want democracy they should be able to choose so.

Debatable. One of the core ideas of democracy is to protect minorities. Democracy has been built around the concept that a majority cannot restrict basic rights of minorities. Arguably no one should be allowed to create a system which allows the violation of basic human rights of minorities.

That's not the whole thing. Looks like it's mostly meta data. The whole thing is some 200G+ bittorrent.

I have yet to see any actual data of this leak, even though it's all over the news.

mr_mitm··on I know why Mathematicians weep
You can just tell them to adopt a different style. To make sure, add another pass with an agent that flags and/or fixes LLM tics. Humans typically do several passes over writings that they intend to publish, why are we expecting agents to do it in one shot? Just like the superpowers skill for software development does a spec phase, planning phase, several review rounds, etc., if you do the same with writing you get very passable results.

German here. I wish. AfD polls highest out of all parties, based on several independent polling organizations. [1] It's not plausible that online support evaporates over night.

Would you mind posting at least one link? If it's actually documented across the internet, this should take you no time. A bunch of anecdotes does not count, though.
mr_mitm··on Artificial Insanity
I've seen this reflex quite a few times now. To diminish the impressive capabilities of the latest LLMs, one resorts to the assertion that they're not sentient, or not truely intelligent, or various other semantic diversions. No one claimed that. GP was all about usefulness.
mr_mitm··on The tilde in your PATH may not be your HOME
The language I grew up with does use non latin letters, I can manage. Then again, it's only four of them, so I get your point ... but I can dream, can't I?
mr_mitm··on The tilde in your PATH may not be your HOME
So many headaches could be avoided if we only allowed `[A-Za-z0-9._-]` in paths. (Arguably, even `-` can be problematic.) Encoding issues, expansion, parameter separation, ... and I never saw a convincing case in favor of supporting anything else.

mr_mitm··on Show HN: WallHop – 12ft.io is gone, so I built a replacement
That would be quite the oversight, considering reddit didn't require you to be logged in (awhile back). But if you happen to have a source on this, I'd be interested.

Personally, I also suspect that archive.is is simply paying for subscriptions as a last resort, but I specifically wanted to know from OP. If they do, they do remove the "logged in" status. It always appears as "logged out" in the archived version. I wonder how far they go, whether they scrub watermarks and other identifiers.

Why stop at `git clone`? Why not include `apt install git` and equivalents for all OSs?
mr_mitm··on Show HN: WallHop – 12ft.io is gone, so I built a replacement
> Well dang, I thought it would just be a worse archive.today

OP states on their blog [1]:

> If every method fails, fall back to an archived copy from archive.is.

I'm wondering why I shouldn't just stick with archive.is then.

mr_mitm··on Show HN: WallHop – 12ft.io is gone, so I built a replacement
I strongly suspect archive.is is buying subscriptions to the big outlets with actually hard paywalls. The fact that both OP and the Magnolia1234 fall back to archive.is for the actually challenging paywalls support that. That's the difference to a Citibank account: you can't simply buy access for that.
mr_mitm··on Show HN: WallHop – 12ft.io is gone, so I built a replacement
In your blog you say:

> If every method fails, fall back to an archived copy from archive.is.

What do you reckon is the reason that archive.is is most reliable? I've seen the same in the Magnolia1234 plugin. If all fails, fall back to archive.is. What are they doing that you or the Magnolia devs can't?

Is it fair to say that Crawler spoofing only works on sites that don't care?

Google recommends [1] checking the reverse DNS hostname of the source IP. I don't see any room for tricks there. So if you spoof a whitelisted Crawler simply by choosing the right values for some request headers, it means the publisher's web team is either clueless or doesn't care enough, no?

mr_mitm··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
Are we positive the account was enabled? If what I think happened, happened, then they dumped Active Directory password hashes, in which case you don't see the account status by default when using popular tools. I sometimes do password analyses for corporations, and in the beginning, when I reported a few particularly weak passwords of particularly powerful accounts, they often told me that this was an account which had been disabled years ago, so this wasn't useful information to them. Eventually I started filtering out disabled accounts.

Then again, it sounds like this organization had many issues. (Why was the former employee's account still enabled? Why didn't they mandate MFA?)

mr_mitm··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
There are typically quite a few steps between initial access and domain domination, which I assume is what they ended up with, considering they have administrator account passwords. Well, unless you are using 123456 as the password for an admin account.

mr_mitm··on Nobel Prize in Physics goes to Francis Halzen
Similar to the Millennium prize by the Clay institute, the amount of luck and effort you need to receive the prize don't make it worthwhile. Plus, it's generally expected to use that money for further research. It would be advisable to focus on other endeavors, if money is your motivator.
mr_mitm··on Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: Francis Halzen
It could be the beginning of Neutrino astronomy [1]. So far, we only used the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays, to observe the universe. If we could equally leverage neutrinos or gravitational waves, we could observe much more of the universe. For example, the cosmic microwave background radiation enables us to deduce the conditions at 300ky after the Big Bang. The cosmic neutrino background [2] could give us insight in the conditions 1s after the Big Bang.
