mrayycombi··on Ask HN: Why are dating apps so bad? Why hasn't anyone made a good one?
Some ideas:

1. Profile quality (and honesty) varies wildly. Peacock and dishonest profiles dominate.

2. There is no Hobsons choice mechanism to force rotation among matches.

3. There are no incentives to respond or follow up.

4. Fake profiles benefit the platform but you have a bootstrap problem if you have no users. Plausible AI fakes will make this worse

5. There is no web of trust- if someone meets someone they could assert trust even at a low level. If I trust anyone in their web this would vet against fake profiles.

I could go on...

You may be literally correct, but the purchase of an ad company makes that literal assumption likely wrong.

The ambiguous nature of the changes favor some shady self dealing. Sorry.

mrayycombi··on Louis Rossmann opines on the Firefox debacle [video]
Exactly, which is why buying a homeless drug addict a coffee and a sandwich means he can shift that money into drugs.

And why "humanitarian aid" to countries at war allows budgets to be shifted to weapons instead of food and medical supplies.

Sometimes you just can't do the seemingly obvious "right thing"

You may just end up with the "tipped cashier" effect where wages are driven down on rationale that they will be tipped.

Now if you buy a self serve coffee in a paper cup the cashier whose sole job is to take your money, expects a tip because their wages are shite.

Isn't this the "New York keeping it real" 'tude they are so proud of?

Not being flippant, I'm serious. That's what I've heard.

In peesonal experience, I found New Yorkers to be far friendlier than 99% of Bay Area baristas, so there's that.

Complacency is not just feeling good, but doing so while ignoring a risk.

You can feel good about addressing risks, the opposite of complacency.

Brendan Gregg's USE method is for performance troubleshooting but could work in any situation (broken is just the worst performance, right?)

mrayycombi··on OpenAI Researchers Find That AI Is Unable to Solve Most Coding Problems
Damn. How did they write code before 1992?
mrayycombi··on OpenAI Researchers Find That AI Is Unable to Solve Most Coding Problems
Where are the low level CEOs vs high level CEOs?

I'll bet AI could do their jobs right now.

Can SOMEONE please write AI software to replace these people?

mrayycombi··on OpenAI Researchers Find That AI Is Unable to Solve Most Coding Problems
Despite the lack luster coding performance, AI has PROVEN its able to provide a rationale for profit taking job cuts, layoffs, reduced stock grants, and increased executive bonuses.

So it's not ALL bad news.

mrayycombi··on Meta slashes staff stock awards as group embarks on AI spending drive
Exactly. Slash staff, tweak job titles and descriptions, hire them back at lower wages and/or as contractors.

Go Zuck.

mrayycombi··on Meta slashes staff stock awards as group embarks on AI spending drive
The AI drive was so successful they were able to slash staff, cut stock awards for remaining staff, and find money left over for executive bonuses. AI is truly amazing.

mrayycombi··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
I don't disagree, I think some disasters will be or are being made.

However, he needs these groups to some extent to roll back regulations. He can't be assured existing people will play ball.

So with hand picked cronies with no job security pushed to run the show over the ones with some job security he can push for deregulation.

If disasters happen along the way he can blame Brandon er Biden, etc and sell a heroic fix for profits.

mrayycombi··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
He's going to fill the empty slots with loyal cronies he can fire at will.

This is, I think, just "stage 1"

mrayycombi··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
I think I have a hunch what Trump is going to do next.

He's going to fill these fired probationary workers with new loyal probationary workers hand picked by him.

He will then make these new probationary workers in charge of the agency.

If they don't do what he wants, they can be fired at will.

mrayycombi··on A mole infiltrated the highest ranks of American militias
Mexican cartels have more money weapons and men than all the "right wing militias" combined.

So, yeah. Let's worry about a dozen guys in Idaho.

mrayycombi··on Nearly half Dell's US workforce has rejected RTO. Rather WFH than get promoted (2024)
But is this ivory tower hands off manager good for companies?

It seems the Musks and Ghosns of management reject this hands off approach and achieve great results.

Gosh.

mrayycombi··on Americans Are Tipping Less Than They Have in Years
That's the intended dynamic.

You are being pressured into submitting to being overcharged.

mrayycombi··on Americans Are Tipping Less Than They Have in Years
Indeed, you need to tip for the privilege of self service.
mrayycombi··on WSJ: Americans Are Tipping Less Than They Have in Years
In Japan no one tips, customer service is fantastic, and prices are low if you want low priced goods.

In San Francisco tipping is expected for any or even no service, customer service is horrific, prices are high everywhere.

I say stop tipping.

mrayycombi··on H-1B visa lottery is shutting out top talent
Intended purpose? I suspect it's purpose has been served as intended all along.

The "top talent" was the ruse to justify the program.

If it "accidentally" stopped serving that top talent purpose it was obvious years ago. Then , whoops! I guess we'll just have to keep letting in non-top talent...?!

It was a camels nose attack on IT sector workers salaries and the vitriol of anti-racism was used to defend it, along with other similar efforts to destroy American wages.

Oddly, in the 1970s, the Democrats would have spoken out against it, back when they cared about American jobs. Not any more.

Lol. Look up "yellow journalism" - why don't they view their jobs as a legacy of pandering to the rich and lying to the public?

I assert that necessity is self created.

The Romans made themselves your boss. There was no "rational" necessity.

Bosses come into existence by will, not logic.

The world is irrational. Strawman are legitimate forms of persuasive argument, logic is for Spock.

mrayycombi··on Microsoft disguises Bing as Google to fool inattentive searchers
Nepotism is a kind of corruption. It might be quite legal in some cases - private parties I think.

In some cases not as much.

It represents the appearance or actuality of kick backs and favoritism for "other" non-business reasons.

Put your mistress on the payroll? Why not! Put your 'can't get a job' brother on the payroll? Why not?!

The "princeling" hire is a classic form of quid pro quo hire - you hire Bidens coke&hookers son, his dad says hi to you on the golf course.

Nothing to see here.
