mrdependable··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
This guy knows he is full of shit.
mrdependable··on Learning to live with Waymos
I wish I could be excited about Waymos, but knowing how these things go, I have a strong feeling this will turn into something dystopian. My guess is a future where cars are much more expensive and you never get to actually own them. Couldn’t we just invest in better public transit and make it harder to get and keep a drivers license?
mrdependable··on Steam Client is now faster than Epic's new vibe coded launcher
My computer in the 90s used to take 30 minutes to boot. Now we complain about 10 second load times. What a world.
mrdependable··on Ask HN: Why do people say "I built it" when we should say "Claude built it"?
Imagine you use Claude to write a paper for school and you turn it in. The teacher asks, “You wrote this?” You reply, “Yes, I used Claude to generate it for me.” The teacher replies, “So, Claude wrote it.”

“No, teacher. Claude is just a tool. I wrote that.”

Many people in these comments will apparently agree with the student.

There is unspoken context that people assume when conversing with each other. AI has made assuming that context dangerous. People who want to play semantics to mislead others are obviously lying. Those who acknowledge that extra context is needed now are not.

mrdependable··on Ask HN: Why do people say "I built it" when we should say "Claude built it"?
By that logic, Elon Musk built a rocket and his tools were all the employees. It really depends what the person is taking credit for exactly.
mrdependable··on How Amazon pushes up prices all across the Internet
Is that meant to say you are willing to ignore what Amazon is doing because their shipping is convenient?
mrdependable··on Ask HN: Anyone using Jev / other decision models? What for?
I am about to try using it as the last step in an email spam filter.
mrdependable··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
Good way to keep metrics and prove work is happening would be my guess.
mrdependable··on REA Reverse – Engineer Anything
My guess is we will be streaming everything in the future with whatever crap hardware they let us buy.
mrdependable··on The Mathocalypse
Reading that section and the linked essay was kind of depressing. It reads like the most important part about the AI apocalypse is who called it first.
mrdependable··on Ask HN: How will the AI endgame play out?
There are many more narratives about the future of AI than that. I just saw a talk stipulating that AI is a reaction to populism by the class of capital holders. They say it is going to be used as a way for them to hold onto their wealth; hence the mass surveillance we see now.

I personally think it is still too early to tell. We are basically sitting on the edge of a pool dipping our toes in the water, waiting to jump in. Whatever predictions people make about it now, they are ignoring all the inevitable twists and turns that are bound to happen in the coming years.

mrdependable··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
Will take years to make productive if anyone is even willing to invest in it.
mrdependable··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
That is not binding, hence the NYT trial.

That is not what the text you quoted is saying. It says that the output may be transformative, which is one criteria, but the other criteria depends on how it is used and what the source is.

mrdependable··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
That is one of the ways they determine fair use, whether it will affect the market for the work.
mrdependable··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Training has not, in fact, been decided on yet. Of the four criteria deciding whether something is fair use, training only maybe passes two.

mrdependable··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
This has nothing to do with programming or productivity. I am addressing the fact that people like DHH and his fans are in the habit of framing the future as written and that you can either embrace it or get crushed. Embracing it is giving OpenAI, Anthropic, et. al your approval to keep on going. I'm not denying that AI can do the job a lot faster.
mrdependable··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
Nothing that he said is just him espousing the truth. It is the world as he and all the other AI-pilled people wish it to be. It is a world they want to convince everyone is inevitable. There are still a lot of people outside of tech bubbles that don't like the direction AI is going and don't want to embrace what these companies are doing or how the government is handling it.

And honestly, do people really think everyone is just going to become an "energized creator"?

mrdependable··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly
Really interesting link, thanks!
mrdependable··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly
This is really looking at the problem from the wrong angle. It’s not that we don’t need all those degrees. The problem is that tech companies are making so much money that it makes other industries practically irrelevant when it comes to return on investment. It has thrown the economy completely off balance.
mrdependable··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Wouldn't that mean the cost of metering it is more than they make from metering it? I don't think that is the case.
mrdependable··on What Capital Never Told You About Rent
Hacker News doesn't like to ruffle any feathers.
mrdependable··on What Capital Never Told You About Rent
The problem with this is that the author has explained capitalism in a way that sounds harrowing to the wider public, but sensible to everyone holding any sort of power. These outcomes aren’t a side effect of the system; they are the system working as intended. Governments and corporations don’t want people that are comfortable and happy, they want people strapped to the yoke. The constant stress is them cracking the whip.
mrdependable··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
You are both using a different definition of sharing I believe. When people have an expectation of privacy, use by others should be forbidden. Tech has gone completely off the rails with the use of private data.
mrdependable··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
This kind of thing is one of the reasons I really hate how AI is coming to fruition. These companies get a whiff of something valuable and they use their vast resources to take it for themselves. For everyone else, the only recourse is extreme secrecy.
mrdependable··on GPT-6 Astra
They did use “AI” but not an LLM. If they had, I am sure OpenAI and friends would be shouting it from the rooftops.
mrdependable··on GPT-6 Astra
More than that I hope considering what it costs to make the thing.
mrdependable··on GPT-6 Astra
I came in first place by a mile just holding the gas button. Not much if a “game” but I guess the elements are there.
mrdependable··on Ask HN: How do you survive a job you hate which is slowly making you sick?
If it were me, I would make an exit plan. Run all the numbers, how much you would need to survive a certain length of time, what the numbers would look like depending on how much risk you're willing to take, what you would do if things didn't work out. Plan it meticulously, and work toward it. This will give you something to look forward to and having options would become a reality. Then when the moment is right, pull the trigger if you'd like.
