mrfish··on Google Checkout Nightmare and the $126,000 phone call
So you made $126,000 and your still using Google Checkout. I call bull shit! Most people get a merchant account from their bank and then they don't get screwed.

If this is true then I think you should probably send out a nice letter to your customers and tell them that your refunding their money because Google is causing you grief, link to a blog post explaining the situation in details, and ask them to pay again via your new merchant provider. I think that if people saw the refund on their statement, then they'd pay again. Then you'd get something.

I think the lesson here is that you should never rely on a service / company who won't put any effort into customer support. I thought this was common sense?

mrfish··on The Perils of Positive Thinking
I realized I was reading a post by a moron when I read this.. "Vancouver’s suicide-inducing winter climate" - Oh you mean the mildest winter climate in Canada. WTF? Buy an Umbrella!
mrfish··on Lost camera hitches 1770km ride to Florida on the back of a sea turtle
So where is the youtube link with the photos they say it took? WTF?
mrfish··on Severe Earthquake Warning For California In September 2010
Seriously? It's a humorous video I thought I'd share with you. Good for you for not supporting Flash but like religion, it's your choice. I think it's probably best viewed on in IE6 for Linux!
mrfish··on Severe Earthquake Warning For California In September 2010
Unbelievably my friend sent this link to me because he was "clicking around" the weather network. I didn't think anybody did that anymore.
mrfish··on "Hacker Monthly": now available in e-book format
Um, funny. That's what I enjoy the most about the paper version. I like that it feels a bit homebrew!
mrfish··on Ask HN: User Verification Suggestions?
Canadapost.ca does a credit check when you signup for a change of address and asks the user to verify two items on their credit report. Ouch.
mrfish··on Remember Babylonian Twins? It's now on Apple's top suggested games for iPad
This is an awesome story! Congrats!
mrfish··on What's special about this number? (0-9999)
I thought "42" was the meaning of life?
mrfish··on What's special about this number? (0-9999)
The people who wrote this entry have too much time on their hands. Hey I must have to much time on my hands to make this comment about people having too much time on their hands thus presenting at least a ironic situation and at most a Time Wasting Paradox.
mrfish··on Ask HN: Who's hiring?
Hey Sunir, What about remote Vancouverites?
mrfish··on Ask HN: How do you find a side job?
Well not entirely. The differences I was thinking about was to do that, but also have people post their jobs to bid like on Elance. The difference is that a client would see local developers to their location first. I was also thinking of getting recruiters involved and having developers do the moderating. So yes like that but more.
mrfish··on Ask HN: What are you working on tonight?
Trying to catch up on way too much Elance work while watching the Olympics... oh and watching Lost that I missed the other day.
mrfish··on Twitter Experiment
Clearly the experiment is to gather as many sucker volunteers as possible. I for one signed up!
mrfish··on Ubuntu is switching the default search from Google to Yahoo
Who cares. Anyone using Ubuntu is smart enough to switch the default browser themselves. It's the cattle that use Windows that are the problem.
mrfish··on Weather: On a Strictly Need to Know Basis
Well when I was a kid I used to always say "Hey why do I have to wipe my own ass." and now theres a app for that! Gods sake open a window and look outside!
mrfish··on How should I monetize this post? 16,000 views a month.
How about selling a video version for those who don't know what to do. Download and install Captasia, Create a video that explains how to do it visually, and then put a link in your page to buy it for a small price. Also consider a PDF version with more screen shots and very percise instructions (supported with comments from your post) etc... But keep this post free as it's the launching pad. Also don't over sell it. Just be honest and say "EDIT: I noticed that this page is very popular so I made some suplimentary material that you might be interested in buying if you found this post hard to understand". Hell I'd even go so far as ask for donations.

But the trick is not to make it sound like your wanting to make a business on it. Then people won't be put off because honestly, you probably won't make a mint on this post. You'll probably see less than 1% of visitors monitizing.

mrfish··on Paper: The Grand Unified Theory of Superman's Powers [pdf]
Why did he tells us to "Shut Up" in the conclusion. I thought it was well done up until that point.
mrfish··on Herd Mentality
The only equalizer will be applications online. Right now running web os apps suck compared to PC equivilents, but when they don't and people start using them instead of Office, or other programs, then who gives a rats ass what OS we use. We'll all be on dumb terminals and we won't give a shit. That will be Microsofts fall.....or will it? I heard somewhere that their office online product was way better than googles. I don't know.
mrfish··on Experiment HN: Remove Numbered Listing
I read HN from google reader so it doesn't even affect me. I wonder how many people actually read the site instead of from their reader.

edit: I just realized that by doing it this way, I negate the point system. Oops.

mrfish··on Experiment HN: Remove Numbered Listing
Oh god. Please don't use zebra stripes. That's even harder to read.
mrfish··on Niche Site Builders
If you like not getting paid work for realtors. Or lawyers for that matter.
mrfish··on Ask HN - What's your best startup idea?
Elance for local people only. So no overseas professionals allowed. Wouldn't make any money though. I suck at ideas.
mrfish··on Ask HN: Does anyone take the risk to work on private projects from workplace?
Get a better paid job? The year 2000 is calling and it want's it's reality bubble back.
mrfish··on Ask HN: Does anyone take the risk to work on private projects from workplace?
Or if your lazy and a web programmer you can do everything through a portable app on a USB key. www.portableapps.com including a web server. Thus giving you the power to work on stuff without the pain of moving it everytime you leave work.
mrfish··on Ask HN: Does anyone take the risk to work on private projects from workplace?
Yup. I'm doing it right now.
mrfish··on Check out my side project: I rewrote rxvt in javascript
jquery?
mrfish··on Ask HN: advice for my site, happyjobsearch.com
I'd like to say that I do this already myself but nope. I'm just too lazy. Good idea! Not sure how you can monetize it but good idea.
mrfish··on Immigrant founder of indee.tv stuck in Vancouver due to visa hassle
Also Vancouver has a HUGE Indian community so I hope he was able to take advantage of that.
mrfish··on Ask HN: ideas for little projects you have?
Ok, Take any link and display the corresponding link in the web site's mobile enabled equivalent. Sort of like Bit.ly but with a mobile browser ability. Obviously this won't work for every site but a lot of major news sites have mobile versions. Take www.crackberry.com for example. They have a pc version and a mobile version but the links in the RSS feeds the links are always for the PC version. No auto switching if your viewing it from your Blackberry. So translate the PC links to link to their mobile site. That's it. Then users of the service can link to articles on crackberry.com but if they view it with a blackberry, it chooses the mobile site automatically.
