mrj··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
Market share has been falling, quick, listen to what the customers have been saying for a decade!
mrj··on HOA's are making the home crisis worse
Sure, but it makes sense to research one you're about to buy into and there's a lot more to the site than this post. I clicked around some.

This site seems to provide some data that's compelling. I see some gaps in California and a couple of liens that mention FL in Los Angeles. Maybe it's a starting point if moving though. This kind of transparency is a good thing. Some HOAs are abusive.

mrj··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
I "self host" on Hetzner for Hargrove avoidance
mrj··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
This is why my self-hosted Vaultwarden is my one password that I have to remember and requires no 2fa, which is the only important account that doesn't have 2fa.

If I wake up in a bathtub missing a kidney I can still get to my passwords and 2fa sources stored with it. Some accounts require SMS (annoyingly) so I'd have to buy a phone but the auth and credit card numbers I need to do that are in Vaultwarden, too.

I don't have good solutions now for OP (other than buy a new phone through your carrier and transfer the number). But everyone else do think through your personal DRP. Generate backup codes and put them somewhere safe, too.

mrj··on Lotus Notes and the dangers of starting from scratch
This is my recollection as well. Microsoft was basically the savior back then, when Lotus was viewed as old and hard to maintain. It wasn't unusual hear from colleagues suffering a multi day Notes outage due to sync issues or the bridge being broken. "Hip" companies moved to Outlook and Exchange.
mrj··on Whistleblower warns Postal Service mail ballot system has catastrophic problems
He's spent years telling his supporters not to vote by mail. So during the election when there are problems with the mail, those will primarily affect the other party. That's enough to steal an election without more steps.
mrj··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
Yeah.. no, thanks. I make coffee and sit by the pool for that, or bike around town before the heat sets in. I commuted for 20 years and, sure, I had lots of time to think, but it also destroyed my back and health.
mrj··on The Fall and Rise of Screwworm
That's worse though. Cutting a program that had been successful for decades is short sighted, but people tend to begin focusing on the cost of prevention after so long. Memories fade and the question starts to become, "Why are we still spending so much?"

That's not what happened. DOGE carelessly cut a program in the middle of fighting a crisis.

mrj··on Google's Antigravity bait and switch
Unfortunately, even if you upgrade there are still upgrade prompts for an even higher version of Workspace and gemini.

Recently screen sharing a document I noticed a new "omg please use gemini" button they placed OVER THE DOCUMENT itself. That's in addition to the magic star thing in the right and the gemini menu item. If you're using Chrome there are the browser ai buttons, too.

mrj··on Asahi Linux Progress Linux 7.0
Plenty are whining now and that doesn't seem to bother them. I mean, this is one of the largest companies in the world. This is the company that once told people they were holding the phone wrong. I can't see them being particularly more bothered by people complaining in a slightly different way.
mrj··on Asahi Linux Progress Linux 7.0
They don't have to support it, just document the system or release their own kernel code. They don't even have to mention Linux.
mrj··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
As a long time Linux user, this comment makes me sad since many of those features were copied from Linux (many from Unity) :)
mrj··on Our commitment to Windows quality
Yes, as I explained. He's happy with it. He doesn't care about the OS just wants it to launch programs like it's supposed to.
mrj··on Our commitment to Windows quality
Have you read the article? There's real frustration with Windows. It's so bad that my 15 year old, who only really uses his computer to launch Steam, asked me to help him install Linux. He had heard about Bazzite and already knew his gpu would be compatible. He gets about 20 fps more on Linux and can choose when updates are applied. There's no forced online login, ads in the OS or copilot prompts. His browser doesn't revert to Edge.

He doesn't really want to care but Microsoft's decisions have made their main product into an annoyance.

mrj··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
This is great. Also, as somebody going through this change for the second time, I'll add that things come in waves. Sometimes grief, sometimes loneliness, sometimes regret, etc. It'll swell and seem to last for forever, but then it'll pass almost without noticing. When you're in the worst of it remember it will ease up eventually.

Whenever I feel down I try to redirect those thoughts into some new thing that I can do now. Nothing is ever 100% negative. Find those positives, dig them up and display them.

I get through by getting into every single thing I couldn't do before. Just like when I turned 18, I went to every place I could find to get carded. Even a great relationship is work and compromises are made, and it's hard to find the time to do all the things.

This weekend I dug out my trip collection I wasn't allowed to display. I pulled out old photos and hangers that didn't make sense for our blended family but now it's just what I want. I bought some used golf clubs. I rearranged the whole house to suit me (and to fill in the empty parts).

I'd bet your dog never seen either the snow or the beach, so take a whole trip just to do it. Learn to play drums. Spend hours at a bookstore. During a bad breakup some years ago, I volunteered for a campaign and went knocking on doors. Not only did I not get shot but I made some friends, too.

Revel in this phase. Because this will also pass and you'll find something else eventually (if you want to). I'm trying to be the most single I can be to really appreciate this time and learn from it.

You know, looking back at my life so far I realize.. all of my best stories were from my single days.

mrj··on Microsoft is walking back Windows 11's AI overload
The last lines on the page are a FAQ -- "You can find your favorite apps [...] under the Apps section in the left navigation of the Microsoft 365 Copilot web app."

mrj··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
If it "reeks" though it's not just water vapor. I see a lot of these cars too, and you can tell it's been going on for a long time when the back of the car is covered in a layer of black grime. I think that's what kind of car problem the post is referring to.
mrj··on Ask HN: Share your personal website

mrj··on ChatGPT Health
Well maybe your health data picks up a heart condition you didn't know about.

Maybe you don't know but your car insurance drops you due to the risk you'll have a cardiac event while driving. Their AI flagged you.

You need a new job but the same AI powers the HR screening and denies you because you'll cost more and might have health problems. You'd never know why.

You try to take out a second on the house to pay for expenses, just to get back on your feet, but the AI-powered risk officer judges your payback potential to be %.001 underneath the target and are denied.

The previously treatable heart condition is now dire due to the additional stress of no job, no car and no house and the financial situation continues to erode.

You apply for assistance but are denied because the heart condition is treatable and you're then obviously capable of working and don't meet the standard.

mrj··on Show HN: Chart Preview – Preview environments for Helm charts on every PR
Congrats! I could see the value of this, for sure. I handle this problem by spinning up a preview environment in a namespace. Each branch gets its own and a script takes care of setting up namespaces for a couple of shared resources for staging (rabbit and temporal).

It was a lot of work setting that up though. Preview environments based on a helm deploy makes sense. I wish this had been available before I did all that.

mrj··on Over 40% of deceased drivers in vehicle crashes test positive for THC: Study
That's probably not the thing to tell a parent whose kid just made a dent and a black smudge on a MachE. I don't want to over index on the "think of the kids" argument, but we don't take driving seriously enough. Wikipedia says:

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of preventable death for people aged 5–22, and the second most common cause for ages 23–67.
The linked article is astounding. The attitude in this thread is astounding, too. Because driving is ubiquitous and necessary in most of the US, we've become too accepting of the problems. Yes, if you're hitting the vape pen every day you should absolutely not be driving. Jetlagged? Take an Uber. Stroke risk? Give us the keys.
mrj··on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration
And it just happened to me again. I got a new phone and my personal payment account went into some verification status and I can't use my wallet. Even though Google itself moved the card. And I was able to add the card and use the wallet with my gmail account. Wtf.
mrj··on Over 40% of deceased drivers in vehicle crashes test positive for THC: Study
Well, it would be good for the rest of us on the road if people driving two tons of murder box are 0% impaired.

I'm no angel but I have gotten more diligent... I'm just reacting to "the degree". The goal has to be zero degrees of impairment when a moment of inattention can kill.

Also, my son was just hit by a driver while he was on a bike and in the bike lane. They claimed not to see him. He's fine thankfully but it's really scary to watch him ride off.

mrj··on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration
Oh no, this is just a Google thing. I've done the same verification bs for four different companies now, multiple times for each of them. I just keep an image of my license on my computer so I can upload it on demand. Google's payment verification is byzantine.

It'll trigger when you sign up.

It'll trigger if you create an Android developer account.

It'll trigger if you get a new phone.

It'll trigger if your card expires.

It'll trigger the month before your card expires. Why? Fuck you, that's why.

mrj··on Donating the Model Context Protocol and establishing the Agentic AI Foundation
Anthropic is a Public Benefit Corporation.. It's goals are AI "for the long-term benefit of humanity," which seems like it would benefit humans a lot more if it were openly available.

mrj··on Migrating Dillo from GitHub
For real. I've been hearing the interface is slow and requires Javascript for years and never really paid much mind, it worked for me. But lately the page loading has gotten abusively slow. I don't think it can be simply blamed on React because that move was made long before this started.

I've taken to loading projects in github.dev for navigating repos so I pay the js tax just once and it's fine for code reading. But navigating PRs and actions is terrible.

mrj··on Ask HN: Hearing aid wearers, what's hot?
Well, tech has progressed in the couple of years since I looked at things. The best thing to do is to get a good audiologist who can recommend devices that work best for the kind of loss.
mrj··on Ask HN: Hearing aid wearers, what's hot?
My son is 14 and has a moderate to severe loss. During his younger years we had a big clunky behind the ear type of aid and it was fine for a while. But tech progressed and we started noticing that he was having trouble hearing "s" sounds. I researched and got him the Oticon Real and it's been amazing and his speech dramatically improved with the new tech. There have been a lot fewer problems with wind noise and he can talk and pay attention in loud environments like school or a restaurant. His grades shot up.

The newer tech is definitely worth it but spendy. There are times though when I'm a bit jealous, too! He can turn them off when he doesn't want to hear and can listen to anything on his phone over bluetooth, as well as take calls. And he never wakes up at night because of noise :)
