mrkstu··on How octopuses squeeze through too small gaps
I think adding ‘seemingly’ would cover the basis of violating the law of contradiction.
mrkstu··on The Hackintosh Reborn
Linus is full steam ahead on AI, so one way or another those distros will be running AI code unless they want to fork the kernel.
mrkstu··on The Hackintosh Reborn
Asahi doesn't take AI generated code, so they won't take Omarchy code, but they are trying to get upstream core Linux to accept their patches.

mrkstu··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
This just isn't true on the Mac- as noted, Linux installs fine. The same path is open to MS if they want to patch Windows to install on a Mac.

Which is why most everyone does a subscription model. ~$15 per book, even if its 800 pages written.

bubonic, so while he looked at death's door, I don't think the timeline was as strict

mrkstu··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague
I'm assuming if its a bio-lab that its a gain of function version that may be immune to conventional antibiotics.

Actually went to a scout camp as a teenager (in the 80s) and one of our scouts got the plauge. Took a long while for the hospital to identify it and get him on heavy antibiotics because no one had seen it in real life before.

mrkstu··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
Any fellow CompuServe users around???
mrkstu··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
Better framing in their lawsuits- being a ‘market’ is less a thing in a monoculture- i.e. the market for Apple phones vs the market for all Android phones from a variety of makers.

Also in the worldwide market it most definitely isn’t a monopoly in phones at all- which is exactly why the EU had to reform their laws (DMA ect)to get regulatory powers over them.

I'm sure plenty of Idahoans and Washingtonians, for instance, take advantage of their neighbor status for high ticket items like this...
mrkstu··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Lots, if your time horizon is ~5 years for not buying new hardware, you're good.

Otherwise you'll have to wait to see if the AI circular financing club collapses- if you still have a job, there should be deals to be had...

mrkstu··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Made by the people rather than the politicians- the mainline politicians all thought it would/wanted it to fail- they just thought they’d get a boost from catering to a disaffected minority.
mrkstu··on Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK
Thing is public domain can be used any way you want. The Libre style licenses are specifically engineered to make the source available to the users of the source, no such clause exists in using public domain.
mrkstu··on Taste Is All That's Left
Infinite Slop Regress
mrkstu··on Not hiring junior engineers won't solve the problem you think you have
Yep. I'm a network engineer/architect- love the velocity LLMs give me in developing tooling around APIs- but if you don't know the problem domain and why you'd WANT the tools and the actual output that is useful, having the AI would be absolutely useless.
mrkstu··on Smaller, faster, safer: running Kimi and GLM at scale
I'm getting somewhat conflicted. There is a Twitter account I follow that has great takes and lots of deeply personal posts... BUT he obviously uses an LLM in his writing pipeline somewhere. Too many AIisms scattered about to ignore.

I'm not thrilled with it, but he is obviously using it to improve his writing overall- to communicate some great ideas that are personal and germane. I've decided that being too inflexible serves no one. If it is true slop, I'll not revisit the writer in the future- if they are using AI to polish writing that at its core is a unique voice, I'll accept it and learn to live with it...
