mro_name··on X users are unable to post “Signal.me” links
exactly. Once we stop treating TwiX like a public good but rather like the private website of a a gaming cheater with a lot of guests, things would be more obvious, wouldn't it?
mro_name··on I ditched the algorithm for RSS
yes it does. The world is full of 'another's.
mro_name··on Blogs rot. Wikis wait
frankly I find rot quite appealing.

Rotting produces compost, fertiliser. And at the same time makes way for new things. Great, isn't it?

There's this earthquake phrase in past tense:

> We felt like we had agency.

mro_name··on Don't Publish with IEEE (2005)
in german law it's even impossible to transfer copyright (Urheberrecht). There is but one way: inheriting. What can be transferred though is usage right - licensing.

mro_name··on FreeBSD: How Can We Make It More Attractive to New Users?
is the user base shrinking or why should we?

IMO pulsating, vivid stability is more important than growth.

mro_name··on Data center emissions probably 662% higher than big tech claims
glimpsed into it, looks fancy but find it apologetic. IMO it's double-standards to campaign against "the next datacenter from being built" without reducing personal usage and demand.

Individual frugality is the precondition for collective degrowth, both practically and morally. Otherwise you just open business opportunities for datacenter growth.

IMO both should be pursued, make one and don't omit the other.

mro_name··on Convert Markdown files to RSS feed
I have some like this http://rec.mro.name/podcasts/zuendfunk/broadcasts.atom (and .rss, too) which plays the audio nicely e.g. in https://miniflux.app but I remember having trouble with iTunes on MacOS and the Apple podcast iOS app.

But his is mostly try-and-error and merely no specs. Apple doesn't talk about atom AFAIK.

Racket is interesting, I'm into Ocaml, but create those feeds via https://codeberg.org/mro/internet-radio-recorder/src/branch/...

mro_name··on Convert Markdown files to RSS feed
100% includes iTunes or Podcatchers in general where I hardly find documentation for but would be interested for (my) https://mro.name/radio-privatkopie/

Can you give me a pointer how to write the Atom podcast feed?

mro_name··on Convert Markdown files to RSS feed
The "Why RSS" doesn't mention why instead of RFC4287 Atom.

mro_name··on Ask HN: What is the best software to visualize a graph with a billion nodes?
for curiosity - what wisdom do you intend to draw from visualising relations of single gut bacteria? Or is it grains of sand in the sea? How many of them will you zoom into? Maybe clustering may make things feasible.

My mother can't. And she doesn't mind.
mro_name··on Anyone can access deleted and private repository data on GitHub
I always acted as if there were no such thing as private data on github. Maybe even the internet as a whole.

mro_name··on Devzat – Chat over SSH, with some nice quality-of-life features
but nginx or caddy can't run CGIs, they want scalability to the billions.

Disclaimer: I build a personal social web server https://seppo.social like that on top of shared (apache) hosting requiring no root privileges to install and run.

Or with a few lines of sh you can turn many cli tools to web services like https://qr.mro.name/

mro_name··on Devzat – Chat over SSH, with some nice quality-of-life features
which is great for human scale! Don't serve billions and burn the planet doing so.
mro_name··on My daughter (7 years old) used HTML to make a website
Wonderful! Lucky she, has a space to put it unmonetarized and under her (parents) agency and responsibility.

I host a youth computer club and help at holiday camps and see this a lot. Some elementary school kids (girls mostly) love to write.

All you need is to leave all the distracting tech aside (No tools! No frameworks! No cms/ssg! No autocomplete) and have a space without advertising or TOS where the results can be show to friends & family. Some also love to draw with https://twilightedge.com/mac/pikopixel/ on our raspis.

mro_name··on Chat Control: Incompatible with Fundamental Rights (2022)
that's not what I am talking about.

I talk about that today it's not allowed to abolish democracy which - believe it or not - was allowed and happened 1933.

See e.g. https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/gg/art_9.html

mro_name··on Software Friction

mro_name··on Chat Control: Incompatible with Fundamental Rights (2022)
we germans learn in history lessons at school what can happen once a democratic process abolishes enough fundamental rights.
mro_name··on Chat Control: Incompatible with Fundamental Rights (2022)
difficult balancing act. Having a legislative body throwing fundamental rights out of the window isn't appealing either.
mro_name··on Chat Control: Incompatible with Fundamental Rights (2022)
I mean e.g. the safe harbour scandal that EUGH nullified after a 10-year legal struggle. Was violating EU core values. That's as close to unconsitutional as one may get not having one. Then came privacy shield, another 10-year legal fight and groundhog day. You get the idea.
mro_name··on Chat Control: Incompatible with Fundamental Rights (2022)
I wonder how it can be legal to repeatedly undermine constitution and push or vote for later high-court-nullified laws and be allowed to repeat as if nothing was wrong with that. Like drunk driving forever. We ban counter-constitutional activities outside parliament and authorities. Why not inside?

I am much for 3-strikes here.

mro_name··on What does it feel like to read RSS feeds?
is survivorship bias a bias towards surviving? I'd take that as a starting point every day.
