mrsssnake··on Getting ready to operate GNU Taler in Germany
Thing most miss about Taler when comparing to Were or Blik:

You can download Taler app, open it, withdraw money from ATM or a friend, without logging in, without even having a bank account or app provided by a bank. Tokens in the Taler wallet are decoupled from current system and cannot be taken away without shutting whole system down. It is the closest to digital cash we have that does not depend on blockchains.

mrsssnake··on Mitos editor is a fork of Helix
I can only imagine this being said from someone not really using these editors daily, I use Helix, so: "xdjp" becomes "move this line two lines down", "mic" becomes "replace text in current quotes with", "A" becomes "at the and of the line add", no thanks.
mrsssnake··on Mitos editor is a fork of Helix
You mean humans stop using written text? No documentation, science papers, todos, longer form async communication, transcription, etc.?
mrsssnake··on Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design
The thing I hate with vibed apps the most is zero seconds spend on how things around what is being build are already structured and what problems was already solved, just focusing on shiny result.

`sudo sh scripts/install_debian.sh`, a 583 lines long script, basically now a whole software just to handle the installation of this project on one distribution, seriously? If we vibecode already, just do the normal packaging.

mrsssnake··on Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design
Skeuomorphic design was a solution to teaching the customer how to use the digital product, but I wish we have more of its side effects like shadows, icons that pop and other things that are pleasant for the eye and depth.

I don't know if it's just because it was better or am I just tired of the current white (like #FFFFFF white) backgrounds with everything flat and not connected. I would like my browser tabs to be in the shape of a physical tab in notebooks.

mrsssnake··on The tilde in your PATH may not be your HOME
Is there some tool, language or way to early script together inputs and outputs or external programs, with some safety or "proper" (for lack of better word) programming languages but with convenience of Bash (no wrapping like "exec(programname)"?
mrsssnake··on Fuck Android Developer Verification Program
Honestly, beyond my deGoogled Android smartphone and a GNU/Linux laptop I am looking around for pocketable device between those. Mecha Comet looks like a perfect fit, but it is not released yet.
mrsssnake··on Tailcat – Like netcat, but over Tailscale’s data plane
Tool like this exposes big problem with the current shape of the Internet, I believe.

Everything should be possible with just plain netcat and IP stack. Someone asks about NAT holepunching, encryption, static IDs, permissions, etc., yes this is what Internet lacks and why every P2P app reinvents it over and over again.

mrsssnake··on Modern email can be built from borrowed parts
Here is another, not so new, idea:

Username is your public key, password is your private key. So we get end to end encryption and account ownership out of the box. Something similar to how .onion addresses work. Needing easy to remember addresses? Build aliases on top of that. Needing server-side automation? Handle trusted server your private key.

Also, almost everyone carry a 24/7 powered and Internet connected device in their pockets. The Internet - network that allows globally sending any data between devices. Maybe with full redesign third-party email servers should be made optional.

I believe we should focus less on how to redesign whole service and build more universal layers instead. First, vsending any data to any machine. Second, optionally remotely accessing our data. Third, mail-like format of data.

mrsssnake··on Real Linux for your smartphone: Ubuntu Touch release 24.04-2.0 and 24.04-1.4
"Real" here is very stretched, it is more on the Android than Fedora side, if we measure being "real" Linux as being close to popular desktop distro stack.

It is based on Hallium. And no Flatpak or swappable graphical environments here.

Still cool project.

mrsssnake··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
"...avoiding OS security restictions by going through the debug port..." the user delibretry opened and paired to app with clear visual confirmation in order to use it.
mrsssnake··on Introducing selfie for sign-in: a new way to access your Google Account
What you are is one factor. What happened to MFA approach here? Also it is a factor we cannot change, so if someone obtain a video of our face like that or success in making a working fake, we cannot change our look like we can with a password.
mrsssnake··on Back to Kagi
Uruky allows JSON formatted output and basically started to use them as API for my private SearXNG instance. Basically using them as paid search API that is much more reliable than scraping DuckDuckGO and Brave, with the benefit of blocking common AI slop sites and manual ranking of domains. Having EUSP first and Mojeek second somehow gives very satisfying results, both small nearby European businesses and big sites are searched up well, even without depending on American index.
mrsssnake··on Back to Kagi
Almost all LLM do traditional web search in the background anyway. So if you want data straight from the source without probabilistic text generation, it will be faster to do the search yourself. Like if I want to know the country of origin of a company, would type its name and go to Wikipedia. While LLM would usually search literally "What is the country of origin of ..."? and then visit LLM generated sites that SEO optimized the query on which a fraction of text is going to be relevant after which the information is very low quality.
mrsssnake··on If you want to create a button from scratch, you must first create the universe
Abstraction and reusability is good even when copying is getting cheap.

In a same vain, why create functions or classes, when AI can rewrite the code in place and keep track of rules.

mrsssnake··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
Even on the Android or iOS phone the EU app won't run if the device owner made even a tiniest change of the operating system without Google or Apple approval.

The EU developed system excludes the 1% of people for which the popular mobile solutions do not work and also make the rest 99% totally dependent on the selected corporations.

mrsssnake··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
Even in a world where Android and iOS have 100% of market share, the law (including indirect but obvious consequences of the law) should not force using them.
mrsssnake··on Since Chromium 148, Math.tanh is now fingerprintable to link underlying OS
JavaScript was a mistake.
mrsssnake··on Astro 7.0

mrsssnake··on OpenWrt One – Open Hardware Router
As some not deep into networking, just home(lab) stuff, learning OpenWRT took some time. But now cannot think of buying a router not for OpenWRT, once I learn what is possible I want to use it.

Fot example from my ISP I can have two options for PPPoE connection, first is legacy IPv4 only but lacks IPv6, second is IPv4 but behind CGNAT and with modern IPv6. With OpenWRT, I am able to make two PPPoE connection over the same wire and have the best of both worlds.

mrsssnake··on OpenPrinter
My point is not whenever this is good or bad, hardware tools cannot by nature be self-replicated like software tools, but they should not call it open source.
mrsssnake··on OpenPrinter
Does "open source" even mean something anymore, or should we give up and just accept it as common catch-all phrase for everything that suck less, without one definition?

Open source AI without a source. Open source software, oh but only up to 4000 users after two years of release for people on south hemisphere. Now open source hardware but your copies of design are for noncommercial use, only our copies are not restriced.

mrsssnake··on OpenPrinter
As much as this is nice protect, and physical one so different things any, still you cannot give/sell some software/design/media and restrict who, where and how someone can use it (noncommercial, not in this country, not at that phase of moon) while calling it open source, public domain, or similar.

As long as softwsre isn't going to be proprietary, it is a good idea just shouldn't misguide about being open source.

mrsssnake··on LibreCAD in the Browser
> I'm not a CAD user, and I don't want to install one just to draw five lines and a circle.

I have installed LibreCAD years ago and used it 3 or 4 times to add measurements on a downloaded drawing. Installed it with just "pacman -S librecad" and enter. Takes just ~82.7 MB on the disk. No account, no background service, completely gratis. Never asked me for an update, because it is always updated with the rest of the system. For all the years it sits there, waiting for a moment to be needed.

While I do get the appeal of the ability to squeeze desktop program into a browser, especially when using someone else's computer, so thank you for the project, while I do not understand the level of push away desktop programs get sometimes.

mrsssnake··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as protection
Weird definition of useless.
mrsssnake··on Monetization Gateway
Internet needs an open, integrated and universal payment layer. But first the payments should be done well (look at: Taler project), then integrations should be build, not the other way around.

I know many people here would be against anything related to payment on the Internet, but I do believe the ability to have a button like "One click here to anonymously with no account pay 0.02€ and download the media" could be a net positive for Internet freedom.

mrsssnake··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
It's just another proprietary software, on the lesser evil side of spectrum. The reason for people being so up in arms about it, is because voting for lesser evil makes it greater.
mrsssnake··on Bring Siri AI to EU iPhone Users Safely
What's the problem? Just install another app, some alternative to Siri, I bet it will even work better and have the same system API access you can giv… ah, well… maybe that is what the EU regulation is all about?
mrsssnake··on Let's Encrypt bans certificate usage in any US sanctioned territory [pdf]
Why when connecting to a TLS website service that does not have a CA signed certificate, I am welcomed with "Secure connection failed, browser not trusting the ceritifate. Do you want to continue?", without showing me the actual certificate fingerprint?

On desktops browser displaying the fingerprint/hash requires clicks, on mobile is not implemented and on native apps practically not existing.

The keys should be shown, so they could be verified manually in person or via other channel. Just like the SSH do. Someone say people would just click "accept" without a thought, but the button is already here, just no information what actually is accepted.

mrsssnake··on Ask HN: Why hasn't there been a real competitor to Ticketmaster yet?
A really great book and very good chapter
