mrtesthah··on You are protesting the wrong technology, people
LMS facilitated surveillance is particularly relevant at a time when academic freedom is under assault.

The state of Alabama just passed a law prohibiting all state workers (college professors included) from using the term “Gulf of Mexico”.

Texas A&M university has censored teaching Plato’s philosophy because he described same-sex relationships.

mrtesthah··on Tasfer: a text editor drawn on a 2D canvas
A human is needed to show how app’s technical features are relevant to a particular audience with a shared social context. As the LLM is not (and should not ever be) a participant in that social environment, any marketing it generates will almost certainly land as tone deaf or presumptuous.
mrtesthah··on Tasfer: a text editor drawn on a 2D canvas
Cool idea! I approve of the privacy oriented design. But it looks like you didn’t actually test this on iOS as automatic text correction is completely broken.

Also your website appears to have been written and generated entirely with an LLM. That doesn’t inspire trust.

mrtesthah··on RealPage rent-pricing case wraps with nearly $360M to renters
The current players in crypto are the same people. And there’s noting systematic about crypto that changes this — people with money can afford to buy more mining capacity or stake more coins.
mrtesthah··on "People Don't Want to Work Anymore" Duh?
Absolutely. Lack of effective enforcement of anti-trust and consumer protection laws are major factors in rising costs of everyday people. Corporations and oligarchs get to do whatever they want and suffer no consequences for it, because Citizens United gives power to those with the most wealth.

There’s a reason why half the country would vote for a democratic socialist now.

mrtesthah··on Closed AI models dominate the price-performance frontier
What is even the point of measuring this if these companies aren't profitable anyway? The prices might as well be arbitrary.
mrtesthah··on Mac at any scale
That must be why everyone’s trying to release Android apps now.
mrtesthah··on Mac at any scale
>How I wish we have proper web app apis at last

You mean APIs that inconsiderate developers use to release a simple calculator in the form of a 300+MB binary that eats a quarter of my RAM?

This author twists himself into knots to morally rationalize Russia's invasion of Ukraine:

https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2024/02/putin-histor...

Today's post asserts other points of Russian propaganda (e.g., about Ukraine being irrevocably "corrupt") without any evidence. The Poland-Ukraine coalition is currently subject to heavy Russian interference, and this author seems to be playing a part in that:

https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/russia-exploi...

Even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine he was seemingly muddying the waters around the Novichok poisoning of Sergei Skripal:

mrtesthah··on A/SIDE – Private photo sharing and encrypted messages
If someone generated a website whole-cloth from an LLM, how can we trust anything on it?
mrtesthah··on Notational Velocity and nvALT, classic macOS note-taking apps, are back
Looks like nvAlt didn’t pull the database storage upgrades from the new NV. There are GH issues of people losing data from older versions so I’d assume those bugs remain.

The nvAlt commits are rapid fire and no longer come from elasticThreads, so I’m assuming the other author is just vibe coding now without understanding the original codebase.

mrtesthah··on A/SIDE – Private photo sharing and encrypted messages
No AI, except that it’s obvious this website HTML was generated entirely with AI.
mrtesthah··on How Google determines the names for bodies of water in Google Earth
It’s not really a matter of being surprised, is it? It’s a matter of whether they should be mercenary in the first place. Claiming that some behavior was expected is just another way to shut down criticism through cynicism.
mrtesthah··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch

mrtesthah··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
Administering phase 3 drug trials is the most expensive part of the process by far. They conveniently put that at the end.
mrtesthah··on DOJ says presidents should be able to sell secrets on eBay
At a certain point we just have to consider them all participants in a single oligarchic conspiracy to overturn democracy. If we cannot get justice through the system then it will have to be done by the masses themselves.

They have also arrested citizens simply for driving in their own car proximate to an ICE kidnapping. But if we preemptively act like we have no rights then they've already won.
mrtesthah··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
European countries have been embracing and funding free software at all levels of government and business at an accelerating rate, and doing so with the same ethos of personal freedom and autonomy. It would make sense to continue to that trajectory in other technological areas.
mrtesthah··on Password, Please: Border Searches of Laptops, Phones Up 32% This Year
CBP believes it has the right to files saved locally on your device itself. However explicitly cloud-hosted data (that is not stored on the device) is supposed to be off-limits, as I understand it.

And keep in mind that American citizens cannot be denied entry to the country for refusing to unlock or hand over their devices. They might hold you for a little while, but they cannot stop you.

mrtesthah··on How the Military Will Hack the Election
Voter Protection Program: Countering Lies about the 2020 Presidential Election

https://statesuniteddemocracy.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01...

Ballot Harvesting

Myth: Nevada’s expansion of mail-in voting resulted in illegal ballot harvesting and fraudulent votes for mail-in ballots.

Facts: Nevada courts found no fraud for any votes, including mail-in votes.

“The Court finds there is no evidence that voter fraud rates associated with mail in voting are systematically higher than voter fraud rates associated with other forms of voting. …[T]he illegal vote rate totaled at most only 0.00054 percent.”30

• Nevada voters followed the law with respect to the ballot collection.

• Secretary Cegavske, a Republican, defended the integrity of the election. In fact, Secretary Cegavske issues her own “myth versus fact” document that debunks all these conspiracies. She states that “we have yet to see any evidence of wide-spread fraud.” She noted that four separate cases questioned the integrity of the election in Nevada. In all cases, “[a]fter examining records presented, each case was discounted due to a lack of evidence.” She said that “we have not been presented with evidence of non-citizens voting in the 2020 election.”

mrtesthah··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
The practice of deliberately engineering software without full understanding of the implementation, especially when it comes to robotics, should be illegal. Technology serves society alone and it should progress at a pace that is sustainable for adaption. Your excitement for a “singularity” does not outweigh someone else’s health and safety.
mrtesthah··on Europe EV sales rose 70.3% in September, 32.6% of market share
e-bikes in particular have reduced fossil fuel use by huge amounts compared to EVs. When you consider that most of a car’s energy is used simply to move the car itself, the aggregate inefficiencies are staggering.

mrtesthah··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years

mrtesthah··on OpenAI employee arrested by FBI over hidden listening device, company says
Maybe recruited by saudi intelligence. The AI doomer cult is just another arm of the same "rationalist" philosophy that the oligarchs are using as cover for their monopolization of compute resources.
mrtesthah··on Thinking will become a hobby
The corporate managerial classes no longer rule; we now have a struggle for power among would-be oligarchs who are willing to burn their own cash for control of mass media (e.g., Twitter and Paramount).
