mrtron··on Launch HN: Maritime Fusion (YC W25) – Fusion Reactors for Ships
Have you considered making long haul tugboats?
mrtron··on Chasing Passive Income, Americans Turn to Vending Machines
In 1998 I went to a seminar on vending machines and the numbers didn't work.

I would love to see some details from a Japanese owner where vending machine usage is more common, but also there are zillions of machines.

mrtron··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
That is the current wise choice.
mrtron··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
Folks rent these condos at a high price, and folks working in that area buy condos at these market prices.

It is not like high priced art.

mrtron··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
Why is that all considered "money laundering" rather than investing? There was a forcing function on getting money out of HK prior to China taking over, but that seems more diversifying than "laundering".

Similarly, many Canadians own rental properties (often bought without viewing them) in Florida and Phoenix. Planes full of these folks used to head to those regions for a few weeks or a month in winter months.

mrtron··on Google ends plans for smart city in Toronto
I am a very optimistic individual, and have considered this project as vapourware since day one. All vision and posturing, and no execution over years.
mrtron··on What happens when your career becomes your whole identity
I know many farmers.
mrtron··on The Popularity of the 4.7″ iPhone
I would bet that corporate customers are a huge purchaser of the iPhone SE.

I am aware of several huge companies exclusively purchase that device.

mrtron··on China defaults hit record in 2018, and the 2019 pace is triple that
Imagine you were able to find the magical instrument to bet on this event. Let's simplify and say its based on shorting both RMB:USD and these secondary foreign real estate markets. (the details don't really matter much for this argument)

I first heard this IDENTICAL storyline in 2002. This magical instrument has been shit over the last 20 years. RMB:USD is suspiciously flat by design. Real estate in Canada as mentioned has skyrocketed.

The long term bet you are proposing has failed 4 for 4. Your near term bet has failed 10+ out of 10+.

mrtron··on Tesla Live Stream – Autonomy Day [video]
I think the part that Elon, and the engineer, are trying to express that you are looking past is "A dot product with some memory attached" is what they need to do low latency image inference on the camera data.

They don't need a multipurpose CPU/GPU, they have a single well defined task that dominates their compute needs. They built a chip to do this that is cost and power effective, and redundant for safety.

Not cleaning snow off of your vehicle before driving is crazy.
mrtron··on Ask HN: What did you find in your DNA using 23andme?
Their rates are far lower than whole genome sequencing because it is a "Genotyping chip" or SNP Array.

They don't sequence your genome, they look for about 600,000 common SNPs.

If you do get your whole genome sequenced (as opposed to the outdated exome sequencing), you will get a lot of data but it will be difficult to utilize. 23andme has survey data + lots of customers, and can do this type of statistical genome-wide association studies (GWAS). With your whole genome, you will have much higher resolution data about yourself, but limited ability to leverage the additional data.

mrtron··on Colorizing and restoring old images with deep learning
Anyone else left wondering if the hand really was red in the photo?
mrtron··on Ask HN: Is 23andMe DNA testing worth it?
Your doctor is not correct.
mrtron··on Taking Tesla Private
Why don't you like the guy? I am always surprised that people could have a net negative opinion on someone who is trying hard to push technology forward in multiple directions.

I agree this move is brilliant, and could be a huge competitive advantage when self-driving bad press liability kicks in.

mrtron··on Canadian man changes gender on government IDs for cheaper car insurance
Minimum coverage is fairly comprehensive, and they love to charge the hell out of younger folks.
mrtron··on NTSB: Autopilot steered Tesla car toward traffic barrier before deadly crash
My Subaru with EyeSight accelerates heavily when it no longer is tracking a car in front. This has happened once or twice in odd circumstances, but since I was paying attention to both the speed increase and road in front I tapped the brakes to disengage.
mrtron··on Tesla crash in September showed similarities to fatal Mountain View accident
I use the Subaru adaptive cruise control quite a bit. It turns off when it is unable to see well enough, which usually only happens in scenarios where I shouldn't be driving and can't see (like during a blizzard).

Human+automation is very powerful! However, I don't think we are far from self-driving beating human alone.

mrtron··on What's Hiding Inside Egypt's Great Pyramid? Tiny Robots May Find Out
My grandmother visited in the early 80s, and said "I learned a lot more watching a documentary than visiting".
mrtron··on Leap: An Online Community for Women
Yes, if either option was exclusively provided.
mrtron··on China's Nio takes on Tesla with a car half the price of Model X
I do, and I think it will do very well against those over the next few years.
mrtron··on America’s ‘Retail Apocalypse’ Is Really Just Beginning
Toronto also has a large underground section downtown.
mrtron··on Ask HN: Is there something wrong with internet right now?
Google provides alternatives at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
mrtron··on Waymo Will Test Self-Driving Cars in Snowy Detroit
The rules for driving in snow are pretty simple. Go slow, pump the brakes, give a bigger safety cushion for obstacles.

The problem is likely around vision. A lot of winter driving is done at an unsafe level of visibility.

It is probably better having non static rules for roads. Snow should reduce speed limits, and white out conditions should be used for emergency travel only.

Unless you can utilize radar to obtain better visibility than human drivers, in which case you could probably drastically reduce the number of winter accidents.

mrtron··on Why It Took Google So Long to End Shady Rehab Center Ads
The CPA is so high for rehab that there are many highly motivated people doing highly elaborate schemes for client acquisition. They were among the early adopters for tv ads on adwords a decade ago.
mrtron··on China Blocks WhatsApp
I have several friends who have said that they feel more safe walking around alone at night due to the cameras, when compared to major north american cities.
mrtron··on Man convicted after preventing counter-terrorism police search
With very selective enforcement.

Almost everyone with an internet connected device possess encrypted data.

mrtron··on Despite Proven Technology, Attempts to Make Table Saws Safer Drag On
Interesting idea!

How much would I have to spend? What if I want to do some simple cutting? Trivial?

mrtron··on Letter from Benchmark to Uber Employees [pdf]
Your examples are pretty poor, the most promising company of the last generation did nothing like that.
mrtron··on Tesla Burns Through Record Cash to Bring the Model 3 to Market
For a few select few companies, I see the constant investment (and increasing debt) as an opportunity. The general market will undervalue the performance of the company. AMZN was undervalued for years, and potentially still is, for this reason.
