mschnell··on How to Write with an LLM
Exactly. I often ask for a list of words that describe a specific concept. The choice is made by me.

I remember it like this: If you squint the brackets around the link text make a rectangle and look almost like a button you can press. [Press here](to.go.there)

Isn’t the consensus nowadays that the number of chunks you can hold in working memory more like four?
mschnell··on Can you trust that permission pop-up on macOS?
In the Finder it is translated to your system language. For example, „Programme“ in German. It is still Applications in the terminal.

Maybe we should introduce Mean Time Between Annoyance (MTBA).

Many of my appliances (dish washer, coffee maker, …) work just fine for weeks before an annoyance pops up („deep clean“, for example). Many of my applications do not. For most I could measure MBTA in minutes. Definitely with Spotlight.

I would much prefer if you could change the order so that _local_ results come first, web results after — not possible (anymore). Sad.

mschnell··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
That is actually a feature called ‚Stacks‘. Open the context menu on your desktop and de-select ‚use stacks‘.
mschnell··on Boring tech is mature, not old
But the nice thing about carefully designed products is that they can be built by people who don’t care.

Not sure if that’s possible when building software systems.

I have that too -- not a jet pilot, but a hobby musician.
mschnell··on My Windows Computer Just Doesn't Feel Like Mine Anymore
> Every time I search on the start menu there is a web search, impossible to turn off

I hate this as well, same with Spotlight on the Mac. Doesn’t it make sense to look for things on my own device first?

Anyway, here’s a solution I found for Win11:

## Disable web search from run menu

1. Select Start, type regedit.exe and select the Registry Editor to launch it. Accept the UAC prompt that is displayed.

2. Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search

3. Right-click on Search and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.

4. Name the value BingSearchEnabled.

5. Double-click on the new Dword and set data to 0.

I had a knee-jerk reaction ready to dismiss this post, but it actually makes a good point and it makes it well.
mschnell··on A Magic Prioritization Trick
I struggled with this for years (decades, actually) and used similar reasoning as the sibling comments. And it doesn’t work.

Funnily enough the solution is very simple, but you need to have a list of goals you want to reach. Everything that helps you get closer to fulfilling your goals is important, everything else is unimportant.

mschnell··on Superrational
Hilarious! If you have ever read about Game Theory, a book by Kahnemann or Taleb this should be funny.

mschnell··on Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses?
I would rephrase that: Humans are incredibly stupid most of the time. Only if they make diligent use of ‚system 2‘ they are not.
mschnell··on Ask HN: What was being a software developer like about 30 years ago?
I was seeing the question and started wondering how that time might have felt for those people… only to notice a few seconds later that I already did software development 30 years ago. Oops.
mschnell··on The punk strategy guide to the logical thinking process (2019)
I attended one of Bill Dettmer's workshops a few years ago and it was extremely insightful. The blueprint ("Future Reality Tree") we built for a topic in my organization turned out to be spot on. It's not magic, but it helps to clarify your thoughts, present a consistent argument and understand which problems to address first. (Unfortunately, I didn't do well on the execution part at that time... sigh)
mschnell··on Christopher Alexander
Isn't this one of the key points though: the patterns emerge because of necessity and constraints during construction and use at the location where they are?
mschnell··on The Simple Genius of Checklists
The Gawande book (Checklist Manifesto) contains one. A few points from my notes:

- distinguish Read-Do- - Pause-Points - Read-Do vs. Do-Confirm - 5--9 items - Only killer items - No clutter and unnecessary colors - Wording simple and exact - Use language of the profession - Fit on one page - Has to be tested in the real world - Also don’t forget Communication checks

In a great organization it will not depend on the individual recruiter because the organization as such makes sure that candidates are handled well. Same for management or other traits of an organization.

mschnell··on A Short Lesson in Perspective (2012)
What the article describes is something I also see in the electronics/software industry. So many people are competing about who works the most insane hours, but do not take the time to sleep over things.
