mtam··on Maybe you shouldn't install new software for a bit
Genuinely curious why are tools like ChainGuard not more prevalent? I am sure there open source alternatives for it too.
mtam··on Show HN: Every CEO and CFO change at US public companies, live from SEC
Is the equity piece one-time or yearly grants? I think it is adding up yearly salary with one-time equity grants. Also, how about bonuses?
mtam··on The only moat left is money?
I disagree. Customer relationships, taste, creativity, tenacity, execution excellence, industry relevance, reputation, non-public data, etc... are all hard earned or intrinsic capabilities that matter a lot more than feature development speed/cost.
mtam··on DeskPad – A virtual monitor for screen sharing
I have solved this a while back by connecting my ultra wide monitor twice to the same machine and setting up the monitor to side by side mode. From the OS perspective, it works exactly as if I had two monitors but without the physical bevel/edge in the middle. It is perfect, the only downside is that I lose two USB-C ports, instead of one. It also works 100% on Mac and Windows.
mtam··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
Have you considered this one: https://github.com/continuedev/continue
mtam··on Show HN: BudgetFlow – Budget planning using interactive Sankey diagrams
Wanted to drop a note that I have been using Sankey for the exact same use case for a couple years now. I use Google Charts and about 40 lines of JS code, then I export the SVG (or paste a screenshot) into my presentation slides. It is a bit tedious and error prone process but works great. There are a few bugs on Google Charts Sankey implementation as well that makes so that the order you enter items impact the visualization layout.

In my case, we do project level budget and it has to flow upstream so I need to ensure that the numbers add up. From my preliminary test, it does not look like I can do that with this tool (yet?). I want to enter the leaf / most granular level numbers and then do the group hierarchy and not have to enter every number from top to bottom.

mtam··on GPT-4o
GPT-4o is very fast but seems to generate some very random ASCII Art compared to GPT-4 when text in the art is involved.
mtam··on Tracking Illicit Brazilian Beef from the Amazon to Your Burger
I believe you are misinformed. Brazil is the top exporter in the world of several agricultural products and metals. Beef is not even in the top 10 exports from Brazil to the US.

mtam··on Claim: Private GitHub repos included in AI dataset
Just to add yet another data point. Only my Public repos included. All my private repos are not included.

mtam··on Show HN: Usage 2.0 – Cut AWS Spend by 57% in 5 Minutes
How is it different than nops.io?
mtam··on Ask HN: What's the biggest problem you face as a parent?
(1) Social media, (2) Screen time, and (3) Drugs, in that order.
mtam··on Don't use third party auth to sign in
Google is a profit seeking business entity just like many others and hence will do whatever they can to advance the interest of the company and its shareholders. It would be nice if companies had moral responsibility and societal accountability however that’s seldom the case in USA. The role of taking care of the people belongs to the government. Companies have choices but no obligation to do what’s best for you.

If you are using a free e-mail service ran buy one the worlds largest and most powerful marketing companies as the identity / auth provider for your critical services and applications you should seriously reconsider your choice.

To paraphrase your comment: I'm honestly not sure where we went so wrong as a society so as to reach a point that we get mad when a service we do not pay for, ran by a selfish company decides to shutdown our access.

mtam··on Post Mortem on Salt Incident
+1, however, from what I read, the vulnerability can only be exploited if the attacker has network access to the salt masters port, which should never occur. The people that got compromised had Salt exposed to the Internet, which is obviously ridiculous.

Not trying to downplay the critical nature of the vulnerability but the ones that were compromised by this issue have deeper security issues to deal with.

mtam··on Post Mortem on Salt Incident
“We’ve secured the impacted SaltStack service by updating it and adding additional IP filtering, allowing only our servers to connect to it.”

So this means they had Salt master ports publicly accessible? Why would anyone have salt ports open/exposed to public/internet?

mtam··on Ask HN: Hiring managers, what tech skills will you be hiring for in 2017?
Industry: Enterprise ERP tools and add-ons

- Developers: We use mostly java, swift, and JS (Angular 2) but we always look for polyglot developers, full stack developers, or whatever you want to call someone that see the language as a mean to achieve a goal and not the goal itself.

- DevOps: Deep ec2 knowledge and experience. AWS certification is a plus

mtam··on Ten seconds of math
After going for several minutes I gave up.

In addition to a leader board, it needs to: - Have a time limit and see who can get the most calculations done on that fixed time - or, have a fixed number of calculations and see how fast people can answer them - or, it could get faster as you progress

The calculation of the "you are better than X%" needs to be fixed because everybody in my office was better than 100%

mtam··on The Dumb Way We Board Airplanes Remains Impervious to Good Data
I get it that there is an infrastructure cost but shorter turnarounds seem to have worked for Southwest: http://www.cnbc.com/id/43768488

A 15 minutes reduction each way on a busy route might allow the company to run an extra leg or two.

mtam··on Garbage Collection Optimization for High-Throughput and Low-Latency Java Apps
Just found some more details on https://github.com/sladeware/groningen/wiki/Design that explain it.
mtam··on Garbage Collection Optimization for High-Throughput and Low-Latency Java Apps
I went thru the code and some of the info on GitHub (1) and it is still not clear to me how it tests all the different JVM settings for a specific application.

mtam··on The Dumb Way We Board Airplanes Remains Impervious to Good Data
What I can't get my head around is the fact that we only use one of the plane doors to get in and get out. Internationally we see some airlines using two doors.

mtam··on CSS3 Features That You Can Finally Start Using
A number of users out there use pirated Windows XP with IE6, specially in Asia. Check IE6 countdown on www.ie6countdown.com
mtam··on Can you break my home rolled encryption?
Exactly. Unless I misunderstood the code, If the key size is small (compared to the plain text size) and we know the key length, frequency analysis will work just fine.
mtam··on The Utter Failure of my Windows 8.1 Upgrade
It is unfortunate that you had problems upgrading and I feel your frustration (been there and it sucks) but... You cannot compare Windows upgrades with OS X upgrades for the simple reason that Apple dictates and extensively tests all the hardware components that go into the mac for compatibility. The number of hardware components and combination of components that Windows has to support is substantially larger than OS X's and it is not feasible to expect that Microsoft (and its partners) will be able to test every possible combination. I do not like Windows but comparing OS X upgrade issues with Windows upgrade issues is naive.
mtam··on Node.js and the new web front-end
I am struggling to see how this approach would be beneficial outside of large organizations with massive web apps. For most apps, the benefits do not seem to outweigh the drawbacks of having (1) another dependency, (2) another piece of software (node) to install, update, and maintain, (3) another set of code base, (4) an increase in latency, and (5) all the added complexity to troubleshooting, debug, document, etc...
mtam··on RyuJIT: The next-generation JIT compiler for .NET
True, however don't most large web-based applications have some sort of "warm-up" process/procedure to compile and populate the mostly used caches and pages?

A shorter ramp-up time is always welcomed but JIT is not the only cost. Depending on your application, JIT might not even be the highest/longest portion of your startup time.

mtam··on Amazon Redshift - What You Need To Know
Redshift is a SQL relational database for large structured data volumes, whereas Amazon EMR (Elastic MapReduce) is for non-structured data. The Redshift FAQ has more details on this topic: http://aws.amazon.com/redshift/faqs/#0120

Other than the marketing buzz from SAP, I have not seen any reputable (neutral) comparison between Hana and Redshift that includes price. I also have never met anyone that uses/run Hana that was not already an SAP ERP client, albeit the fact that SAP keeps saying Hana is the fastest-growing product in the company's history.
