mu53··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as protection
Love the work you do. Happy to see the debit from my donation every month
mu53··on AI surveillance should be banned while there is still time
There is a new term, AI Psychosis.

AI chatbots are not humans, they don't have ethics, they can't be held responsible, they are the product of complex mathematics.

It really takes the bad parts from social media to the next level.

mu53··on FBI cyber cop: Salt Typhoon pwned 'nearly every American'
Companies have official discords to respond to requests or questions. They attempted to call out a company (presumably US based) for this concern and got the specified response
mu53··on YouTube steps up fight against ad blockers again
If Youtube's services (streaming/storage) are not paid for, they can't pay content creators.

When people do not pay for services directly with a credit card, they pay for it indirectly with ads and data collection. The internet would be a better place if companies didn't have to worry so much about monetizing indirectly. Plus, the only companies that can give out free services often have monopolistic intent.

This whole debate embodies why the internet has become what it has.

mu53··on YouTube steps up fight against ad blockers again
It is very likely that you are a customer that youtube would rather not have to deal with, so the feelings would be mutual
mu53··on YouTube steps up fight against ad blockers again
increasing friction for ad blockers will increase ad views will increase revenue.

It is pretty easy for a company whose existence depends on ads to see people that use ad blockers as leeches or freeloaders or other derogatory terms to justify making their lives more difficult.

Youtube premium is around $15, and depending on people's video usage, it pays for itself

mu53··on What does Palantir actually do?
The Israeli pm that negotiated the Oslo accords (an important step in the 2 state solution) got assassinated by an Israeli ultranationalist.

It is a crazy situation they got there

mu53··on The rise of AI as a threat to the S&P 500 [pdf]
What AI? ML with gradient descent? Neural nets with deep learning? LLMs? Or the abstract concept of AGI that may or may not possible, but definitely isn't here yet?

Hedge funds and investment banks are already using these tools to the max, and the markets are plenty profitable for everyone

mu53··on Sam Altman Slams Meta's AI Talent Poaching: 'Missionaries Will Beat Mercenaries'
I think its about sapping as much user data from competitors. A company seeking to use an LLM has a choice between OpenAI, LLaMA, and others. If they choose LLaMA because it's free and host it themselves, OpenAI misses out on training data and other data like that
mu53··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
I think they are stupid for broadcasting the program and threatening Israel with it.

Believe people when they tell you what they are going to do. Even if Iran wouldn’t use it if they had it, threatening to use it shifts the probability for them using it.

Khomeini isn’t on Kim jong un’s level

mu53··on East German Stasi Tactics – Zersetzung (2021)
I really think the incoherence of modern reform movements (Occupy, BLM, Defund Police, etc) is the result of modern political suppression groups having enough tools in their toolbox to eliminate leaders of these movements.

Without a strong voice, the movement devolves into contradictory platforms, which results in no action.

mu53··on U.S. pauses all military aid to Ukraine
Most of this narrative comes from Mike Benz who is a former State Department employee that has began trying to educate people on some of the shadier aspects of US Diplomacy. A major facet that he talks about is how the US combines NGOs and non-government investment in order to achieve diplomatic goals.

After the 2014 invasion, the US realized that breaking EU dependence on Russia natural gas would put a serious dent in Putin's wallet.

In response, various groups within the military industrial complex decided to invest into Burisma, where Hunter Biden was oddly a board member with little experience. Burisma's goal was to develop the mineral and natural gas deposits in the Donbas region. Ultimately, Burisma was prevented from this mission because of the 2022 war.

mu53··on TSMC expected to announce $100B investment in U.S.
The US is not going to help defend Taiwan is a fair thesis, but reciprocally, China is not going to attack Taiwan.

Even if Russia gets all of it's demands in the peacemaking process with Ukraine, that war has done permanent and lasting damage to it's economy and global position. For China to attack Taiwan, it would give up any hope of continuing it's healthy trends towards increased economic and political importance.

Eventually, Taiwan will re-join China when it is sufficiently strong. It's symbolism as a continued humiliation by the west is more useful as propaganda than an actual military target.

mu53··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
typical abuser mind games. Nothing Zelensky said is proportional to what Trump or Vance said.

For his base, they won't care, and this event will justify the next few actions that the US takes.

mu53··on Ask HN: Why is it taking so long to build computer controlling agents?
have you tried adding "please"? I found that it works wonders
mu53··on FBI told to transfer 1,500 personnel from headquarters
Maybe they are uprooting people's lives to see if they can get them to quit because the employment protections for FBI agents are likely too strong for a layoff or too many people balked at firing J6 investigators.

Likely, they would still conduct the same operations they did in DC, and they can justify the cost savings by having employees allocated to a cheaper COL area. A lot of law enforcement is clerical type work

mu53··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
I agree with you, but these abstract technical systems have enough wiggle room for lawyers and marketers to bend the rules to get what they want
mu53··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
I am going to say something a bit controversial around here, but all of this E2E and security stuff is just lip service for marketing to consumers.

These companies have to comply with so many laws and want cozy relationships with governments, so they play both sides. It likely does things differently, but if the keys are not secure, then its not secured

mu53··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Is that google's definition or your definition? not being rude, but its pretty easy to get tricky about this.

Since you are sending the data to google, isn't google an intended recipient? Google has to comply with a variety of laws, and it is likely that they are doing the best they can under the legal constraints. The law just doesn't allow systems like this.

mu53··on The 'dangerous' promise of a techno-utopian future
Your link is broken

To be fair, we don't know the future. Solving scientific problems have eluded researchers and their billions of dollars for centuries. Genuine AGI will be on par with solving P=NP or curing cancer. Its a profound problem that gets to the very root of what we are.

100 years from now, AGI could be viewed as such an improbable proposition as flying cars, teleportation, ghosts, or faster than light travel.

mu53··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
Linux is not a side project. It has thousands of developers being paid by chip and hardware manufacturers to ensure that linux works on their products.

With the complexity of systems engineering, for a single driver, it takes months to build one from scratch. Plus, there is not enough expertise within the rust community to take on a project like the linux kernel to match the rate of development by many large corporations with hobbyists.

mu53··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
I think you overestimate rust and misunderstand the problems. This is classic junior engineer "rewrite everything" thinking
mu53··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
The drama is the problem, not rust. I don't know why, but either zealots choose rust or rust induces zealotry.

Its exactly what Linus said.

mu53··on California law enforcement misused state databases more than 7k times in 2023
i got receipts, but this is exactly the type of attitude that is so problematic
mu53··on California law enforcement misused state databases more than 7k times in 2023
It is still a problem today. I lived in SF for a stretch working at non-FANG tech companies, and I met a lot of people who worked for Apple, Facebook, and Google.

After meeting some of those people at a meditation group, they began being creepy by making obtuse, but oddly specific comments on things that I was doing online to suggest they were. I got creeped out and stopped going to that class. I began meeting friends or friends of their friends at different places.

Ultimately, it escalated to the point that an employee at Apple was leaving poisoned treats outside of my door and then listening me dealing with my dog being sick.

You cannot talk about any of this because its really easy for the stalkers to deny its happening. There are no laws in this area yet. If you try to complain or get anyone's attention, guess who is watching your every move. The exact same people that are committing the crimes.

People will look back at today at the political or social strife, and they will wonder how we never connected the dots.
