multiplegeorges··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
> After a local activist uploaded a license-plate search tool on Fly.io, a developer-focused public cloud platform, to an infiltrated Signal chat, HSI agents reviewed website DNS queries and Stripe data along with data purchased from a commercial broker. This gave HSI access to SSH session logs, outbound connection records, the Fly.io account’s signup IP, and a Stripe card fingerprint on an account that had never completed a payment. Agents fused that with Minnesota DVS records and commercial data from the Thomson- Reuters CLEAR platform to produce a driver's license nummber, Social Security number summary, years of address history, phone numbers, property records, and jointly registered vehicles.

Wow, I wonder how they got SSH session logs?!

The breadcrumb trail here is chilling.

multiplegeorges··on BeBox is a Haiku application that emulates Be Inc.'s BeBox
It had a decent number of apps, I drove it as my primary OS for a while.

Ended up using Linux, but it was a great OS for its time.

multiplegeorges··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
No, more like:

> If you're evil, you're at least competent.

Incompetent evil exists. This statement is wrong, B does not follow A.

> And if you're evil, you're not bad.

They aren't mutually exclusive, so this is incorrect.

> And therefore, maybe you're actually kind of good because you're at least getting something done

This presupposes that "getting something done" is a positive end in itself, which is not a given.

Each phrase is wrong. It's impressive, actually.

multiplegeorges··on Pi 1.0
Well, I apologize for assuming! But, nevertheless, that's why TUIs are popular.
multiplegeorges··on Apple Pass Designer
I would've LOVED that. It was a huge need that got filled (half-assedly) by others.

Better late than never!

multiplegeorges··on Apple Pass Designer
This is like 10 years too late.

Wallet Passes are incredibly useful and people like them. I tried to create a Pass with the woefully inadequate Apple documentation years ago and ended up pivoting because it was such a pain in the ass.

multiplegeorges··on Pi 1.0
I like TUIs because I am running agents in Docker, often remotely.

How can a GUI replicate this workflow? I know it could, technically, but not as easily.

multiplegeorges··on What About Rails?
This is probably the best take I've seen on this.
multiplegeorges··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
They all gave $1M to the inauguration, among other things, that's how. The corruption is out in the open.
multiplegeorges··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Not much of a surprise. Government action has been anemic at best. Industry action (overall) has been net negative.

The only hope now is exponential growth of (solar and wind)+batteries making other sources uneconomic. This seems to be slowly happening, so I hope we hit the exponential curve soon and we're there quicker than we expect.

This only stops it.

Then, to fix it, we'll need a massive Direct Air Capture industry that will have to operate for a century, and probably past that so we can hit and maintain a CO2 level of 250ppm.

multiplegeorges··on Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds
> San Francisco schools decided a couple of years ago that they would no longer teach Algebra in 8th grade.

This has nothing to do with this at all. We're talking about 4th grader literacy nationwide and you're talking about algebra in a single area in a different grade!?

The second point where there aren't enough teachers nationwide (10% missing workforce) is probably because teachers are terribly paid, disrespected, and subject to bad working conditions.

Maybe that's why people aren't clamoring to be teachers and the quality of work is low?

multiplegeorges··on A greyscale iPhone setup that works in everyday life
Using my phone in grayscale convinced me of the power of shiny colours. It is shocking how boring my phone feels in grayscale.

This really does help break any feeling of attachment to the device and the solutions in this post really do make it more practical. It does kind of suck using the camera in grayscale.

multiplegeorges··on Alberta to hold referendum on whether to remain in Canada
> blocking a referendum because they didn't consult indigenous groups

The requirement to do so is in our constitution, the Charter. It's not optional and not absurd to anyone with proper historical understanding of Canadian history.

multiplegeorges··on Alberta to hold referendum on whether to remain in Canada
Sedition, technically.
multiplegeorges··on Claude for Small Business
There's something to be said about first impressions and the GnuCash website's first impression does not give confidence in its ability to handle finances.

Ironically for this thread, I think an AI redesigned website would do wonders here.

multiplegeorges··on Why Crystal, 10 Years Later: Performance and Joy
A very well done type system + native code performance, with the ease of use of Ruby is a massive selling point, IMO.
multiplegeorges··on Help Keep Thunderbird Alive
That is very high. Not sure who they are using for processing, but I know Stripe will give registered charities a (very small) cut on their fees, I'm not sure about non-profits. But even with market rates, the average fees through Stripe would be well below 10%, IME.
multiplegeorges··on Help Keep Thunderbird Alive
So, if Thunderbird instead asked for users to sign up for an annual software subscription, it'd be fine?
multiplegeorges··on A forecast of the fair market value of SpaceX's businesses
How many space telescopes better than anything we currently have can we put up when launch costs are <$50m?

A huge synthetic telescope in orbit with an aperture the size of the planet?

How many private earth observation satellites?

The market is huge when weight constraints largely go away and $/kg drops so hard.

multiplegeorges··on Digg is gone again
Much like the vouch system mitchellh is working on for open source contributors, the wider web needs a trust layer that can vouch for a poster's status as human or AI, along with a "quality" score that can travel from site to site.

multiplegeorges··on Ireland rolls out basic income scheme for artists

Kinda like the ones they are already burning in Starship to put these in space in the first place.

Anywhere on earth is better than space for this application.

It did for me. You have to be truly heartless to see a dog being sad about not going outside. So you take it for a walk, then another and another. Soon enough you're researching hiking trails in your region and getting healthier.

Dogs are the best.

multiplegeorges··on Thousands of U.S. farmers have Parkinson's. They blame a deadly pesticide
> If people demand evil, they will make evil, if people demand good, they will make good.

This is so naive.

People do not ask corporations to be evil and they certainly don't demand it. People ask for good value and convenience and corporations respond by doing by amorally pursuing that.

However, when you ask consumers if they want value and convenience at the cost of *evil*, they almost always say no.

Corporations have a demonstrated and well-documented history of actively hiding their evil actions because they know consumers are not aligned with them at all.

If consumers "demand" evil, as you say, then corporations wouldn't try to hide it.

Comparing modern algorithmic/addictive social media to print articles with cliffhangers isn't a serious argument.
