mx20··on New Withings Users Must Pay $99/Year for Apple Health Syncing
They don't restrict the App on the Phone to access Apple Health, just the synch between their Cloud and Apple.
mx20··on Predicting OpenAI's ad strategy
Generate an Answer, get the winning Ad from an API, let another AI rewrite the Answer in a easy that the Answer at least be not contradicting to the Ad.

I think someone should create a leaderboard that measures how much the AI is lying to us to sell more ads.

mx20··on uBlock Origin GPL code being stolen by team behind honey browser extension
But if you create a plugin that calls (via mv2 api?) a separate GPL-licensed JavaScript file to block all ads on the page, and then use your own closed-source code to add your own ads in step 2, is it really integrated or just two separate programs bundled together?
mx20··on uBlock Origin GPL code being stolen by team behind honey browser extension
Is he correct? That you can't have GPL files in your project without all code adhering to it? I thought it has to be linked static. So just calling a GPLed js library likely wouldn't be enough. I think the law is muddy here and not clear at all, even if the code is directly bundled.
mx20··on They have not been trained for this
I remember they said in the last talk last year that there is a "cheat code" that resets the software locks, but almost every train also had slightly different software to obfuscate that they are sabotaging their competition.
mx20··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
SurveyJS already has all that and uses JSON. It's also MIT licensed, instead of this non commercial license.
mx20··on Factory construction boom in the US
A Lot of Energy intensive Companies in Germany and probably other European Countries, are leaving and going to the USA or China. Because of the high energy prices, we have now.
mx20··on Chrome's next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates
Opera and MS Edge for Android don't support extensions as well. So my guess is, the Playstore rules won't allow it.
mx20··on C diff spores resist bleach and remain viable on surgical scrubs, fabrics
Goldman Sachs Analyst thinks otherwise. The company behind the Hepatitis C cure seems to also not doing well with monetizing their cure. There are also countries like Brazil that just suspended the patent.

mx20··on C diff spores resist bleach and remain viable on surgical scrubs, fabrics
But only as long as the patent lasts. You usually can't sell a better cure if the original already cures. A treatment on the other hand leaves room for "improvement".
mx20··on StyleTTS2 – open-source Eleven-Labs-quality Text To Speech
But you are wrong the trained models are separate on Google Drive and have following Text that seems to be an additional License Agreement that also includes using the software and any trained Modell.

License Part 2 Text: "Before using these pre-trained models, you agree to inform the listeners that the speech samples are synthesized by the pre-trained models, unless you have the permission to use the voice you synthesize. That is, you agree to only use voices whose speakers grant the permission to have their voice cloned, either directly or by license before making synthesized voices pubilc, or you have to publicly announce that these voices are synthesized if you do not have the permission to use these voices."

mx20··on StyleTTS2 – open-source Eleven-Labs-quality Text To Speech
Scammers scamming old people is already very wide spread, so should we maybe outlaw telephones as well? Or maybe mandate anti scamming filters that disconnect if something is discussed that could be a scam? If I think about it that actually would make more sense, but still be problematic.
mx20··on Ask HN: Why is OpenAI firing Sam Altman such a big deal?
Such a Firing + Press release is basically unheard of. Looks more like two sides are at war with each other. Almost as if this is about their core believes, about what AI/AGI is and when it is or will be reached and what direction "OpenAI Global, LLC" should go. So their is massive room for Conspiration Theories and speculation.
mx20··on Intermittent fasting more effective than calorie restriction
The problem with your thinking is that you assume that your eating habits don't effect your energy consumption. But that is wrong, if your Blood Sugar is to high your Body can't access Fat and needs to Burn other sources that are scarce and it prefers to make you tired and cold to reduce energy consumption. That doesn't happen if your Blood Sugar is very low and you can easily access your Fat reserves. Eating spikes your Blood Glucose, that's why intermittend fasting works so great.
mx20··on Grayjay – Follow Creators Not Platforms
Maybe that changes in a few Month when Apple has to open up at least in Europe to other App Stores.
mx20··on Grayjay – Follow Creators Not Platforms
Why do non programmers know about open source if it doesn't concern them? They don't have any benefit from an source open application besides maybe theoretically better security audits. I would arue is because people expect that you can pick it up and change the code, so it can be forked and continued in the future and also because it's usually free.

It's also not the only deceptive Adventisten. He also claimed that you can use it how you want the only use case they want prevent is injecting ads into their app. But that could be better solved with a trademark.

mx20··on Grayjay – Follow Creators Not Platforms
Normal people don't even know what to do with the code. If a project is source open or not is completely irrelevant to them. To them usually it's way more relevant that open source software can be picked up and further developed by any other software developer and that it's free.
mx20··on Germany went from envy of the world to worst-performing major developed economy
Prices are up 100% compared to 2007 easily. So GDP being up less than that is a colossal failure.
mx20··on Show HN: HyperDX – open-source dev-friendly Datadog alternative
MIT License allows Amazon and other Cloud providers to offer Cloud Solutions as well. That's why most SaaS changed to AGPL or better versions that explicitly disallow Cloud offerings.
mx20··on The shady world of Brave selling copyrighted data for AI training
How do they detect if someone poisons their data, if they not at least associate IP addresses to the data?
mx20··on Why do cloud providers keep building datacenters in Phoenix?
They now buy from the Nuclear Power plants a few km nearby the German Borders. The Prices are that high because of Taxes. They also probably get cheaper Industry Prices for electricity, but aren't allowed to resell that cheap energy to their customers.
mx20··on Review of Hetzner ARM64 servers and experience of WebP cloud services on them
It's a bad Idea. Stripe and other Banks want proof that you live there at some point, what I heard. And Tax Authorities usually see that as Tax evasion if you don't have "substance" in this country of cooperation.
mx20··on The Reddit blackout will continue
Before that happens they will try to lobby governments to "repair" their monopolies. EU is already trying hard to put major road blocks on open source AI, which is probably the biggest threat to most tech mega corps.
mx20··on Meta Open-Sources Computer Vision Foundation Model DINOv2
The software part already got reimplemented and Models are used as training data for new Models by others. You could argue if using images and other copyrighted training data is allowed you also can use Model to train your own Model.
mx20··on Meta Open-Sources Computer Vision Foundation Model DINOv2
The software got rewritten already and the model weights are probably not protecttable. Especially if you use the model weights to train your own model. Why would you be allowed to use copyrighted data to train your Models but not other Models?
mx20··on Telegram Web Apps for Bots
I am surprised this is even allowed by Google and Apple. Tiktok also has something similar called Jump. I thought there is no chance to get an App approved that is basically an alternative web app store. I feel like this could be even more dangerous to Googles business model, than current AI. Imagine someone builds a search engine that has apps integrated like google flight or a calculator. But basically for every query a different app.
mx20··on Vicuna: An open-source chatbot impressing GPT-4 with 90% ChatGPT quality
HN had a not so good looking study about it.

"Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids "

mx20··on Llama.cpp 30B runs with only 6GB of RAM now
Maybe a lot of people/companies also don't want to give their data and knowledge to OpenAI, so that they can sell it off to the competition.
mx20··on Alpaca: A strong open-source instruction-following model
Interesting. That could be a huge disadvantage for the EU and it's companies that want to use AI and also often can't give their Data to third parties. But I am not sure a neural net is even considered a DB. Because when this was created they clearly had structured Information accessed by people in mind. There has to be some distinction otherwise I make a db that stores digits of PI in a file and if you publish part of it, that is considered substantial enough, you are infringing on my DB rights.
mx20··on Alpaca: A strong open-source instruction-following model
I looked in the training set data and they have quite a few questions about owls. Also it got " downward curved beak" from davinci and got it still wrong.

Like:

"instruction": "Describe the sound an owl makes.",

"instruction": "Summarize the differences between an owl and a hawk.",

"instruction": "Find a fact about the bird of the following species", "input": "Species: Great Horned Owl",

"instruction": "What is the binomial nomenclature of the barn owl?",

"instruction": "Generate a riddle about an owl.",
