naeem··on Pushback against Saudi funding endangers Silicon Valley valuations
Is Russian bot-net spreading and inciting outrage through millions of fake accounts in order to destabilize SA in the Middle East roaming too far into tin-foil-hat theory?
naeem··on Apple’s Shortcuts will flip the switch on Siri’s potential
This is an excellent comment.
naeem··on How I Used Eve Online to Predict the Great Recession (2013)
The Netherlands is a Western economy
naeem··on Peter Thiel Is Reportedly Exploring Launching Conservative News Outlet
Comments here are hilarious. Replace "Peter Thiel" with "Elon Musk" and "conservative" with "liberal" and the circle jerk will fly.
naeem··on Concussion doctor says he found CTE in living NFL player
Marathon runners, climbers, etc you mentioned have a pretty narrow field of physical competence. No way in hell a climber can compare athletically to LeBron James.
naeem··on Concussion doctor says he found CTE in living NFL player
At that distance, at the complete edge of the field (could’ve easily gone out of bounds), swarmed by two guys, with one hand. Most impressive things in history of sports might be a bit hyperbolic, but it’s pretty incredible.
naeem··on Modern life is lonely – We all need someone to help
Reading this is like watching a robot try to mimic human interaction
naeem··on Modern life is lonely – We all need someone to help
I've heard some variant of this idea a thousand times and it doesn't work.

Also, slightly ironic/depressing to react to an article about systemic loneliness in the tech age with "maybe we can make an app for that".

naeem··on Canadian government gag order in CIA brainwashing case
The unapologetic close-mindedness of Americans, even in the more intelligent parts of the web, never ceases to baffle me. Really? Human experimentation started in the US?
naeem··on Edward Snowden asylum: Bolivian president's plane diverted - live coverage
There's no confirmation yet of Snowden being on board, however wikileaks has offered this cryptic tweet:

"The reported actions of France, Portugal and Spain this night will live in infamy."

naeem··on Google rejects White House request to pull Mohammad film clip
Why is the White House even making that request? At which point does religious appeasement start to become institutionalized through fear?
naeem··on Facebook Is The Ant; Zynga Is The Grasshopper
And yet Mark Pincus is a multi-millionaire and a massive Valley success story. Not to mention the last guy that had Zuckerbeg's "zeal" and lived in a humble house died recently, and was known for being an unbearable dick to his employees.

It's usually a big can of worms to judge an entrepreneur by anything other than his success. Besides -- what is so wrong about Pincus wanting to get rich?

naeem··on Can a person be identified by just the way they type?
How do they overcome safety risks? What if in the heat of a gunfight, the user pulls the trigger in a different manner and gets locked out by the gun?
naeem··on The default state of a startup is failure
He brings up some good points, but what does this have to do with anything? Obviously the default state of a startup is failure... what do his preceding two paragraphs have to do with anything? I guess I just don't quite understand the point of this article.

If it's just a PSA about the fact that startups are hard work, I'm not sure what new information it is we're getting here or why this post is being upvoted to be honest.

naeem··on Finding the problem is the hard part
Isn't it sad that building products that add real value into people's lives is turning into a novel idea? Stop building "clever products", build useful ones that people will love. Money comes later, imo.
naeem··on Facebook Unsocial Reader
Seems to die if I try to open up chat, but otherwise its been solid for me.
naeem··on How I Cheated Mozilla's New HTML5 Game - Browser Quest
Just store it on the server. There was no reason for inventory information to be hosted client-side. If the data was stored on the server and fed real-time you wouldn't have the security issue. What you WOULD have is latency issues, which is the primary issue with Node-based games (from my own experience), so that's probably why they avoided it. In a real game, that's how you'd have to do it.
naeem··on Anonymous to shut down The Internet on Saturday to protest SOPA
Ugh. What purpose is this supposed to serve? Are we supposed to get annoyed and coerced into siding with this group? Let's not kid ourselves - these aren't activists. They're 4chan basement dwellers using the guise of a cause to wreak senseless damage.

Although I don't think they've actually done anything over the last 7 months so this is probably just another empty threat. Wasn't Facebook supposed to go down like a hundred different times?

naeem··on How I failed and failed some more, but in the end persevered.
This article hit home as someone in a similar position, as a student. Always a good kick in the rear. Thanks.

naeem··on Mozilla's BrowserQuest - Massively Multiplayer HTML5 Experiment
Shouldn't the beauty of games be the gameplay and the art, not the technology? Isn't it a good thing that the technology behind a game is no longer the primary selling point?
naeem··on Ask HN: Picking your next project - How do you test ideas?
Create a landing page, put it up on forums like hackernews, reddit, quora and see what kind of conversion rate you get for the concept alone. Talk to people.
naeem··on How to Have the Best Year of Your Life (without Setting a Single Goal)
Yeah, not that I don't admire the zen-in-the-art-of-who-gives-a-fuck Hank Moody approach to life, it's just not all that practical in the framework of, say, career development. If you want to build a building, you start laying bricks, you don't wander around with the expectation that you'll suddenly just stumble into one.
naeem··on Happy (?) 7 Billion Day
Happy?!
naeem··on John McCarthy Has Died
I really hate waking up to a black bar at the top. RIP McCarthy, you are a legend through and through.
naeem··on The world economy is heading towards a black hole unless bold action taken
The scariest part of all this, is that for the first time in the past century, we no longer have any options. Less regulation, more regulation, centralization, de-centralization, it's all been tried. We're out of options, and the policy makers and central bankers have clued in (Bernanke's recent speeches have been dreadful to listen to).

Maybe, just maybe, things are going to go really, really badly this time around. Maybe.

naeem··on Twitpic Founder Launches Twitter Competitor Heello
So TwitPic failed because Twitter copied them, so their response is to copy Twitter? Let me guess, the strategy is to build a product identical to Twitter, somehow hope it blows up and becomes better than twitter, then re-introduce twit-pic so that their lovechild can spread its wings and fly again?

naeem··on Greece defaults
This is terrifying. The possibilities of a double-dip recession turn depression are growing by the day. Excuse me while I start working out, learn how to use a shot-gun and develop a taste for cider while deepening my voice.
naeem··on Chosen: A javascript plug-in that makes long select boxes user-friendly.
Sexy! I do agree with a previous comment that the more technologies like these that come out, the more apparant it becomes that HTML as a whole needs a long overdue makeover.
naeem··on A pound of flesh: how Cisco's "unmitigated gall" derailed one man's life
Peg me down as sickened to the core. I've given up complaining about corporate influence. I don't even know why they bother putting up a farse anymore, they may as well just cut the crap and come out and say: we will destroy you if it stretches our margins in any way.
