nafix··on The next two years of software engineering
So you’re freeloading dumpster food from a corporation. You show them buddy!
nafix··on The burden of Long Covid “so large as to be unfathomable”
Hasn't there been lots of evidence in the past year suggesting that Covid was created in a lab? If we were to go down this path:

1. Covid created in a lab (not proven, but high enough probability to be considered a reasonable option):

https://oversight.house.gov/release/covid-origins-hearing-wr...

2. If Covid was created in a lab, this de-facto means that Covid has potential as a biological weapon. I don't see how this could be framed any other way. Even if researching novel viruses is in good faith, it doesn't eliminate the reality that they will always have inherit value as biological weapons.

3. Can someone explain to me why there isn't an extremely aggressive campaign to pin down: a. Where it came from b. All parties involved in it's funding and creating c. Passing laws and sanctions to eliminate further continuation of said research. If it was done by China, then they should publicly be held accountable and action should be taken until that is done by all countries.

In this line of assuming Covid was created in a lab, it was one of the most devastating events to the human race in recent history. Many people died and many more people will likely suffer from effects of long covid. It completely warped the global economy.

Is there no attempt at pinning this down and holding people accountable because it can't be proven that it was lab created 100%?

There's a million lesser events every single day that seemingly get more time, money, and energy spent on holding people accountable for infinitely smaller mistakes, accidents, and wrong doings.

nafix··on Ask HN: Best board games of 2022?
Agricola is a great solo board game. You can do one offs or there’s a sort of “legacy” type mode.
nafix··on FTX’s balance sheet was bad
I feel like all the news stories are ignoring some very blatant questions like this. Maybe they are just waiting for more details to come out?
nafix··on Meta and Google are cutting staff
I like it. I really dislike working with under-performers and people who just refuse to do due diligence on their end. I dislike working with people who always want you to come over to their frame of mind rather than trying to get into yours or meet in the middle. I saw a ton of people coasting during Covid. People need to get negative feedback when they deserve it.
nafix··on Do hair transplants debunk the scalp tension-hair loss hypothesis? (2021)
Sure, but what if you have a good personality, fit body, stable career, _and_ good hair. I don’t think it’s particularly shallow to do a hair transplant.
nafix··on Amazon calls cops, fires workers in attempts to stop unionization nationwide
Interesting the Washington Post ran this story considering it’s owned by Jeff Bezos.
nafix··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
I think comparing it to the Bar exam for Law (and other field's equivalents) is a more apt comparison than the SAT.
nafix··on An update on the campaign to defend serious math education in California
Like I said, sounds good to a layman in general terms (just how you explained it). But the actual implementation is half-baked, short-sighted, and favors a weak/easy solution rather than something more well thought out and complex.
nafix··on An update on the campaign to defend serious math education in California
Sounds like more woke nonsense. Sounds nice and easy to a layman from a super high level but not practical or put through any kind of rigorous rational thought.
nafix··on Stress hormone reduces altruistic behavior in empathetic people
Seems pretty straight-forward. Empathy requires energy and if someone is under stress, they generally have less energy to worry about others.
nafix··on Reinstating our SAT/ACT requirement for future admissions cycles
What do you mean by "whites". American "whites"? The last IQ report has many Asian countries at the top followed by "white" European countries. Whites and blacks are such generic terms. There are many different types of white, black, asian, etc peoples that have different cultures and phenotypes based on the region.

nafix··on [dead]
Can any Seattle workers give more details on the situation? Is it really that bad or is this being over-hyped?
nafix··on Official Response: Request to Freeze Canadian Edge Users’ Accounts
As a mid-30s sw engineer, I’d say it’s a good look. I hate professional facades and meme’ing is how people communicate now. I’d also say the first part of your your last statement is probably correct, in that you might be an old curmudgeon ;)
nafix··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
Thank you. I've also been trying to get this across to other people as well. And here's the worst part. If and when another high-spread virus emerges in the future, there will not be a vaccine available at the beginning, which is also when hospital overwhelming is most critical. So we will be in the exact same situation. I can't believe no one is talking about improving the hospital infrastructure to handle the inevitable next virus. Are there things happening in this regard and I am just out of the loop?
nafix··on Cognitive distortions predict safetyism-inspired beliefs in college students
I think your response kind of shows that you aren’t grasping the pretty standard social construct that she likely got dissed by her friends by most socialized peoples metrics (within the confined context of the original papers scenario). The person you replied to laid it out as clearly as possible. Also, by referring to emotional intelligence as pseudoscience, do you mean to dismiss it as a valid concept? Surely you realize some people are better in social situations than others.
nafix··on Getting Started with Reverb Design, Part 1: Dev Environments
They aren't free plugins. I think it's fair to say they are overrated if people are suggesting they are the "de facto" reverb makers. It would be more reasonable to say that they are one of the top reverb designers. There are a lot of really high quality verbs out there in many different styles.
nafix··on Latvia bans unvaccinated lawmakers from voting, docks pay
If you think this is fun, go read the story about Austria imposing lockdowns on unvaccinated people.
nafix··on An Engineer's View of Venture Capitalists (2001)
That’s a very interesting idea. That would be a very fair and grassroots driven mechanism.

I don’t think that’s something the government would ever allow though.

Then again, in some ways the recent NFT craze is kind of precisely the case. The government printed a _lot_ of money last year and paid out a lot of money during covid. This stimulus is almost like a stipend to go spend/“invest” on all these meme and non meme stocks and crypto related projects, because thats where I feel most of this money is going lol.

I don’t think that was intentional by the government though.

And by government, I guess I mean the Federal Reserve?

nafix··on Pfizer's oral Covid-19 antiviral cuts hospitalization, death by 85%
How disingenuous. It's been proven time and again that those who have been vaccinated can still catch and transmit Covid.
nafix··on Most Canadians believe Facebook harms their mental health
Exactly. How is this even an argument point? If you support banning Facebook because of addictive potential, then add about 50 other things to the list to ban as well. If it's to regulate Facebook more, what exact kind of regulation would make it OK again? Age limit, as in 18+ to use? Don't porn sites use that and children still have no issues logging onto those sites.
nafix··on Strike Date Set for 60k Film and Television Workers
Seems like a great time to stage a strike if the corporate overlords are already under some level of duress. Also, what does being able to see the stage workers have anything to do with it?
nafix··on Southwest new CEO denies walk-off rumors, defends pilots amid schedule meltdown
I live in South Florida and the weather has been exceptionally normal the past couple months. This past week, absolutely no medium or heavy storming or winds occurred in South Florida. Also, no other airlines based out of Florida had these issues.
nafix··on Southwest new CEO denies walk-off rumors, defends pilots amid schedule meltdown
Because when the public hears about other reasonable people showing hesitancy, it shows that the media narrative isn't as true as it is made to be.

I imagine it is to the advantage of both pilots and SW to not admit it is about the vaccine, because the media would take advantage of that fact otherwise.

Also the pilots can't admit to a sick-out one way or another to avoid legal repercussions.

Not saying this issue is because of the vaccine mandate, but it would make sense with the way this story is playing out.

nafix··on Is going to the office a broken way of working?
The workplace is a social hub for many people, although it seems many on HN don't care to socialize at work much.
nafix··on What Happened to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp?
I was thinking more along the lines of the Pandora Papers hitting the MSM.
nafix··on Vaccine experts: Covid-19 booster shots aren't needed now
It's highly ignorant to call unvaccinated Americans idiots. Over 100 million Americans have already caught and recovered from Covid. I imagine many in that group don't see any value in getting the vaccine (rightfully so).
nafix··on Facebook is now claiming official CDC.gov links are “False Information”
That's not why they are decommissioning this test though. There's no reason that both this test, and a covid/influenza test cannot coexist. CDC is explicitly decommissioning this test, and it's not clear why in their announcement. I'm just trying to gain more context here. It's pretty easy to see how this could imply that the current PCR test could have issues.
nafix··on Facebook is now claiming official CDC.gov links are “False Information”
I'm curious as to why there is no transparency from the CDC on why this test is being decommissioned.

Just because there are tests that can do both Influenza and Covid, does not mean that this test would need to be retracted.

nafix··on Facebook is now claiming official CDC.gov links are “False Information”
Are you sure about that? Can you explain to me what the wording from the CDC announcement means?
