naich··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
If it's not working it's because there isn't enough of it, silly.

"Last month BTP announced it was extending the trial for a further four months and expanding the deployments to include London Underground stations. "

naich··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
I like the way it smashes the CPU so that the fans sound like jet engines.
naich··on Throwing AI-generated walls of text into conversations
Obviously you need to use an AI to summarise the wall of text generated by the AI. Duh.
naich··on How Motorola’s 2N2222 and 2N3904 transistors became the default NPNs
The 2N3904 is an old friend who has never changed. I've been using him since the 80s and he's still my first choice whenever anything general-purposey comes along.
naich··on Show HN: Glitchy camera – a circuit-bent camera simulator in the browser
That was exactly my experience with AI coding - useful for ideas and boiler plate code, but not much more.
naich··on Show HN: Boing
I had to stop at 100 or I would have been there all day.
naich··on Show HN: I'm making a detective game built on Wikipedia
Very nice, but I did end up seeing what rude words I could make.
naich··on Rules for creating good-looking user interfaces
It's also far more difficult to read the numbers relating to the items in the drop down menu. You have to make an effort to track to the right with your eyes to make sure you are in the same row, whereas before the number was right next to the item. There is no need to have the numbers aligned because they are not for comparison.
naich··on WebGL Fluid Simulation
The first time I've actually appreciated my laptop's touch screen.
naich··on WiFi suspended at big UK train stations after 'cybersecurity incident'
There seems to me to be a lot of misplaced trust involved in connecting to Wifi networks. It's easy to set up your own public AP and why not call it "Netork Rail Free Wifi" or something?

naich··on Show HN: Bullshit Remover
I can't believe how well this works. Brilliant stuff.
naich··on Elon Musk deletes post spreading fake news about UK 'detainment camps'
They don't continuously prove that they are huge gaping arseholes with the intellect of a mollusc like he does.
naich··on How to defend your website with ZIP bombs (2017)
I tried the example with FF on Ubuntu, and it had no effect whatsoever. It didn't even use up any memory. Are browsers protecting against this now?
naich··on Engineers harvest clean, continuous energy from air
Nope.
naich··on Serotonin booster leads to increased functional brain connectivity
Maybe LSD or mushrooms?
naich··on The world of pipe fittings
Blog updated and the following added:

Thanks to all the good people on Hacker News for their input, from which I've learned a lot. I should stress that any following advice is not from a professional plumber and is purely from my own experience as an idiot making a low pressure beer handling system. It should not be read as the proper way to do anything, especially if you are working on pressurised systems and definitely totally 100% not with gas fittings. Get someone in to do that, you lunatic. Seriously. Don't mess with gas.

naich··on The world of pipe fittings
Mate, I'm not a plumber and it's 100% written from the perspective of someone who is not a plumber. This article is not an instruction manual for plumbers, but a blog of what a non-plumber found to work for him.
naich··on The world of pipe fittings
In this case, both. Sorry.
naich··on The world of pipe fittings
Having just completed a small project involving plumbing, this post on my blog comes from the heart.
naich··on Plant-based ‘beef’ reduces CO2 but threatens ag jobs
Jobs or a habitable planet. Which to choose, which to choose...
naich··on Are our immune systems out of practice?

naich··on Flashsort
This is basically just guessing with style.
naich··on 'Happy Birthday' song copyright is not valid, judge rules
The way I see it, IP is a useful short-term tool to encourage the creation of new ideas, but if used long-term, it stifles creativity in others and takes away some of the incentive for the owner to continue creating.
naich··on The Square Kilometre Array: Radio silence for most powerful telescope in history
Some of the prototype designs for the aerials are currently being made by a bloke called Pete, in the room next to me. He keeps his bike locked to a table and it gets in everyone's way, so we let his tyres down occasionally. They don't tell you that sort of thing in articles like this.
naich··on Pause Me – Apply the 20-20-20 rule to prevent eyestrain while working
Has the 20-20-20 rule actually been scientifically verified as the optimal regime for relieving eye strain or was it something thought up by some bloke off the top of his head?
naich··on How to Ship an F1 Car Across the Globe in 36 Hours
Undoubtedly. I read the first paragraph and thought "this is a DHL advert".
naich··on American Chemical Society bans university after "spider-trap" is clicked
That's the joke.
naich··on American Chemical Society bans university after "spider-trap" is clicked
They have posted a reply here: http://www.asihcopeiaonline.org/doi/pdf/10.1046/9999-9999.99...
naich··on European Commission proposes a reform to the way the Internet is managed and run
Slightly tinfoil hat rant there. The UK government does not decide what you watch, what they have done is pressure ISPs to provide optional filtering (set up by the ISP), with the default set to on. I don't like this and argue against it. It doesn't help my case when bullshit like this gets thrown about.
naich··on Majority of Web Sites Blocked by O2 Parental Controls?
I haven't found one that isn't blocked yet. Even o2.co.uk is blocked as "Technology and Telecommunication" u12 service. "http://www.bbc.co.uk/" is blocked under two categories, so the poor u12s can't even watch Cbeebies online.
