nairboon··on Running a law firm on Free software
What's the free software recommendation for accounting? GnuCash?
nairboon··on In LLM era, can software startup survive?
One a much larger time scale, I think that premise still holds. Greybeards used to tell me how back in the 80s/90s "everyone" (in software) was developing & selling their custom solutions. And it was completely normal to buy your software, the OS, IDE, compilers, Browser, basically everything. But with the proliferation of free software/open source many software business models had to compete with viable free alternatives. And with big tech doing price-dumping in many markets (who still buys a browser?). So nowadays many software sub segments there exist very good solutions that are free, competing with those are super hard and only possible for very specialized niches.
nairboon··on Broccoli2Shell: Brotli decoder RCE in Node.js, Python and more
Brotli2Shell seems to be a more appropriate name for this.
nairboon··on Quad9 to exit France
That's because the Swiss DNS blocking originated in an anti-unregulated-gambling law. Basically all unregulated gambling websites are blocked. There shouldn't be any other sites on that list.
nairboon··on Several Linux kernel vulnerabilities accidentally posted to public mailing list
Technically, if the rate of bug detection and correct bug fixes by AI is larger than the rate of newly introduced bugs by humans & AIs, then we'd asymptotically approach a bug free OS in the long run. But these are big ifs.
nairboon··on Quad9 to exit France
Host in Switzerland, that's where Quad9 operates from.
nairboon··on Compromised LiteLLM 1.107.0 on PyPI Installs a Credential Stealer and Backdoor
Isn't that at least the second time that LiteLLM got compromised?
nairboon··on PHP 8.2.35
Why is the official source (php.net) marked as [dupe] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50180943

and not the github mirror?

nairboon··on PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 out
Now they have finally shipped it.
nairboon··on PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 out
More like >10min early. It's close, but given today’s speed of agents..
nairboon··on PHP 8.2.35
Just make sure to have the ca-certificates fixes already...
nairboon··on PHP 8.2.35
The builds are there: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php8.5/8.5.9-0ubuntu2.1

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php8.3/8.3.6-0ubuntu0.2...

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php8.1/8.1.2-1ubuntu2.2...

but nothing shipped yet by their mirrors, unlike debian.

nairboon··on PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35 out
Good point, at least now Debian has shipped the patched packages.
nairboon··on PHP 8.2.35
A bit too early for the announced coordinated release, no?
nairboon··on EMudhra Intermediate CA Compromise
On my just updated Firefox 158.0.1 on Android they are not blocked.

Edit: however on Firefox Focus 157.0.1 they are blocked.

nairboon··on Timestral: Mistral release time-series foundation models
What's the connection between Timestral/Mistral and The Forecasting Company?
nairboon··on Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains
Sounds like Namecheap. They took one of my domains (held for many years) and try to sell it back to me for thousands because now it's a valuable domain.
nairboon··on The math that OpenAI keeps for itself
What's the $-value of some street cred/publicity vs. $-value of finding some optimization trick that reduces training/inference cost by millions compared to their competitors? Of course they're going to keep that IP to themselves.
nairboon··on The Mathocalypse
By standard semantics, if you state that believing with certainty that the proof is incorrect is stupid, then you surely believe with certainty that it's correct.

Unless you want the negate the certainty part, but then the nudge to gambling is less coherent.

nairboon··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
What a timeline, OpenAI's model is so good, it publishes hundreds of math papers.

The latest model even finds mistakes in previously published math papers!!!*

* so far, only OpenAI's math papers were faulty and needed retraction.

nairboon··on Replacement of petroleum based products with plant-based materials (2025)
I'd guess for a change to the usual AI dominant frontpage.
nairboon··on Gemini ending free use of Flash and Pro models
The entitled consumer is just a symptom of large scale anti competitive practices. It's classic price dumping by the oligopolists. It's so pervasive that consumer get used to these super low prices (free).
nairboon··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
The underlying question is: has a human counted and classified those 140 issues? Or is that information the output of LLM?
nairboon··on Show HN: Hacker Atlas - A map of what Hacker News talks about
Scrolling through ~200 items is not really "infinite scroll", as in reels/shorts etc.
nairboon··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
You had profanity filters for SMS?
nairboon··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
Is that a cultural/national thing instead of an age thing?

I've never had texts censored by texting providers, they're not supposed to read texts in the first place (at least around here).

nairboon··on Java 27
And still funny today, not all jokes survive that long.
nairboon··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
Classical and in a sense neoclassical architecture literally stood the test of time.
nairboon··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
That's why I had to enable the "pause updates for four weeks" setting on Windows. Otherwise every second update would break something somewhere and disrupt workflows regularly. With the one-month update delay you'd get the updates that fixed the previous update.
nairboon··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Like how one can easily not use snap on Ubuntu? /s
