There was that 1 person who used to work(paid?/volunteer?) at Reddit that actively tried to cultivate high-quality AMA on Reddit. Ever since they've been gone. It hasn't felt the same.

Some amount of hope and optimism that was around has definitely dried up or at least moved elsewhere into other smaller communities.

Everything is overly centralized around a particular influencer/podcaster/celebrity/product or whatever nowadays, it's harder to find topic based or open community-based places. The other places still exist, but still difficult to find and keep going.

I do hope the pendulum swings back towards hopeful optimistic culturally rich community vibes in many digital spaces.

The 30-50% ish publisher seems odd? If its supposed to be a region only publisher? If it was an everywhere publisher I'd think it less odd. But for region only unless almost all the sales are from that region?

Also including refunds feels off to me? Is it normal practice to take total revenue than subtract returns like that?

namrog84··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
The last ms team I was on before I quit changed quite a few over the years as the business and requirements changed. I learned a lot about what I enjoy and where I thrive. Where I had done well for a few years the business had become something that was better suited for others. It was best for me and the team that I left and they find someone better suited for the current and future work.

Even now with agentic work there are areas I am able to do well and some areas im not. It's definitely always changing.

namrog84··on Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?
Im currently building a ui framework for unreal. I dont enjoy ui work so I wanted a way to have to write less ui.

For me I dont look too closely at the implementation but I look at the api where if a human was using my framework how is the code they'd have to write and engage look at. Then I also do plenty of performance against a comparable target in my case slate (default unreal) and keep overhead minimal.

So good performance and reasonable public facing api are the 2 main pieces im focused on. Less with the internals.

Care about the seams and interaction and the things you can measure or count.

namrog84··on The AI boom: rational enthusiasm or the next dot-com bubble?
I could be wrong but i thought the local hardware and open models are getting into a pretty good area. While not as good as the more expensive and resource intensive frontier models.

The past few months have reached a pretty good area for me to be useful if there are minimal improvements from here.

I think thered be an energized effort to reducing the costs? Perhaps a small setback but not like a full abandonment burst since there is actual value to be had here

namrog84··on Show HN: I built a task system to handle the drudgery so I could focus on tasks
There are lots of us building free and open source free stuff who just aren't promoting as much. It's out there, but I do agree. We could use more free and open source promotion.

Perhaps a hacker news style thread feed where you can only share free stuff?

namrog84··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
I agree with you on many points. But I have asked recent models to try and simplify or if there are design decisions or assumptions that are preventing it from being simplified. It's frequently able to cut down on what its built up and maintain what is needed.

As always design decisions change and what's needed at 1 point isn't needed later. I was thinking of setting up a daily cron job for a agent to review and specifically keep the complexity and bloat down. To challenge assumptions or at least make sure they are stated. So that I can review and agree or cut it.

But a human in the loop to decide what to cut is tricky to replacd for lots of reason.

I am definitely interested in alternatives, but I am not interested in an alternative that isn't supported and maintained. Though I suppose at some point I can ask my own agents to support/maintain it?

Some people enjoy rewatching or rereading books and others dont. Careers change and maybe we need a different type of mathematicians that does enjoy this work more than historical work?
namrog84··on Why are coding agents so dumb?
Yeah I regularly have 5+ agents working in 1 repo simultaneously even modifying the same file. Since they were all running on my singular local machine. Builds and tests were interfering at 1 point so 1 automatically proposed writing a single script that basically mutex locked it with appropriate wait and timeouts. It had even added this to my own personal agentic todo backlog. They've proposed new skills for me.

They even have split my decisions to human decisions. Proposed and approved work. They can iterate on approved work without me just fine.

And I only just started with agentic coding in last few weeks before that I was mostly a copy paste chat person.

namrog84··on No Man Is an Island
Ive felt like most of my software career has always been focused around automating my own job away and I've always loved it.

And nothing has changed for me except my standards are higher, I have better and more thorough testing, and I can iterate and do significantly more.

Throughout my career ive actually worked from some assembly work to higher level language. PowerPC-> x86 assembly. From c++ to typescript. And now with agentic work im still having the time of my life. It's actually resolved some of my personal focus and attention problems too.

I still push plenty of code to github and if only agents read it and it goes uncredited thats fine with me. Since its not like any of us ever really got publicly credited working at most corporations beyond an immediate team anyway. There are no credits on the big software I've contributed too.

The tools and scripts I build now have shifted to help human and agents work better together. Let agents do what they do better and help empower humans to do what they are better at still.

For the foreseeable future I am still quite optimistic and energized about continuing to do useful and productive work.

namrog84··on Factorio that you can touch
Purely from a vram perspective. A triangle is just 3 vertices and some edges. A few bytes of data.

A similar 2d image of a triangle would likely be thousands of bits of data.

The 2d probably uses a little less per pixel. Whereas the triangle has slightly more expensive compute per pixel cost. But modern gpu have dedicated hardware for that.

3d is probably more expensive compute but cheaper vram usage. At least to a point and a certain set of conditions. Barring things like textures and others.

namrog84··on I Don't Like LLMs
Am I the odd one out. I dont call them out on such things. When a program error or fault. I dont feel the need to call it out. I move on.

I just open new context and explain differently or provide more clarity. You won't ever "win" or convince a corrupted memory context when something goes wrong.i find it amusing, and move onto the next iteration.

namrog84··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When the AI Bubble Bursts
Just to counterpoint the adjacent replier. I have claude, chatgpt, and gemini subs and rarely even use even close to 50%. I code c++ everyday. But im not full in on agentic workflows which is probably why. I mostly do fairly targeted things to my various code bases.

Having worked in such environments. This particular team will try not to do it again But many other teams didn't make the commitment or learn any lesson. And even the original team will churn over people and people will forget or new leadership comes in.

I believe they were being sincere but reality is often more complicated than 1 persons statement.

namrog84··on The changing goalposts of AGI and timelines
I thought that was part of the issue, is the poor understanding of is the test to evaluate if it can think or only if we think it can think. And even that is generalizable since there are different categories of thinking or concepts of the mind.

At least for me it tells me about some options to use ai privately for duckduckgo so I assume it's from them. Possibly collecting views for Ai generated search results.
namrog84··on Dead Internet Theory
I dont know if it's true or not. But I remember reading about this person who would do the community reports for cheating for a game like cs or something. They had numerous bot accounts and spent a hour a day on it. Set up in a way that when they reviewed a video the bots would do the same.

But all the while they were doing legitimate reporting, when they came across their real cheating account they'd report not cheating. And supposedly this person got away with it for years for having good reputable community reporting with high alignment scores.

I know 1 exception doesnt mean it's not worth it. But we must acknowledge the potential abuse. Id still rather have 1 occasionally ambitious abuser over countless low effort ones.

namrog84··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
While I do agree with you. To play the counterpoint advocate though.

What if we get to the point where all software is basically created 'on the fly' as greenfield projects as needed? And you never need to have complex large long lived codebase?

It is probably incredibly wasteful, but ignoring that, could it work?

The downside of this is what happens in other places. You won't neccesarily stand out.

The entities doing endless reposts are building faster bigger audiences and might or will repost your stand out piece.

If you care that you wrote it and that people enjoy it. All is good. But I'd you wanted to stand out with it or build around it. The low effort reposters might take that from you.

In a rare occasion I've even seen a reposter shorten or better edit the original piece.

Though I am still hopefully optimistic that in the long run for the good

I've also seen the term. You've been permanently banned for 12 hours.

Instead of temporarily suspended.

Whatever happened to the word suspended for temporary and ban for permanent and places say permanent with an expiration date.

namrog84··on GOG has had to hire private investigators to track down IP rights holders
I briefly worked at Microsoft xbox back compat where we made the Xbox OG and Xbox 360 games work on Xbox one and newer generations and I know the PMs spent considerable time and effort doing similar things for the earlier Xbox games to be allowed for us to have them work on newer Xbox generations. It's really surprising that sometimes IP changes hands enough in some cases the owners might not have even known they owned something. I think the legal and permission always definitely one of the harder problems. I know music in some games were also particularly challenging, a few games had to have sound tracks removed or replaced.

namrog84··on Show HN: I replaced vector databases with Git for AI memory (PoC)
I'm no ai expert so consider my opinion having little value besides casual user. But I really like this. It seems clever and easy for me to grasp some pros for this approach.

I could envision a bunch of use cases about this workikg well. Ive personally encounter scenadios where sometimes the ai gets hung up on irrelevant outdated fact. But could still look up if specifically needed.

I could see even an automated short summary of all history that is outdated being updated in the vector db from this too. So not all context is lost.

Keep up the great work!

namrog84··on Steve Wozniak: Life to me was never about accomplishment, but about happiness
it's a bit of work and effort to give a talk. And he is rich enough to not need to do it for the money. Time is important. If he'd be doing it for free he'd probably get too many requests. Adding a high $ can simply help filter down to a reasonable thing.to only the largest locations and highest number of people.

I dont want to do contract work but people ask so I just quote an unreasonably high number and on occasion someone bites. I dont need the money so I need an easy filter.
