napo··on Catch a Bird – I made it for my own sanity
Would be cool to make the feeding button more obvious.
napo··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
Oculus was pretty fun and a really nice piece of hardware. What was painful was all the meta things on top of it, which I doubt was something he personally added.
napo··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
I worked at the Staff level for a while, I think the key is to report to a director who manages managers. Every time I did I had a good time, projects were easy to define and people were easy to convince. I had the same level with a few managers who were managing other ICs, and that never worked. Other ICs try to compete on tasks, people don't come to you with their needs, you learn about different projects often too late, other teams are territorial and don't really want you to intervene.
napo··on Show HN: Omacosy – Omarchy-style tiling desktop for macOS, no SIP
Like what? I've been using Aerospace for a while and didn't experience any issue.
napo··on Claude Code's source code has been leaked via a map file in their NPM registry
The autoDream feature looks interesting.
napo··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
I wonder if 1) the PR was created using Raycast and this is the model signing its PR, or 2) if there was some prompt injection done at some point.

Either of these options would still be bad, but here the author suggests that it's just copilot that now just injects ads in its output.

napo··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
I was considering it but got cold feet when I've been told that you could damage it when cleaning it. When I open/close my laptop I leave a ton of finger prints. I'm not too good with delicate hardware stuff.
napo··on A beginner's guide to split keyboards
I do that with my mac. I have two keyboards and have to use Karabiner-elements for them to share modifier keys (like shift). Works well.

I did that because I was interested in split keyboards but they are all more expensive than what buying another keyboard.

napo··on Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
Amazon search looks bad for us because it is designed to sell ads. Its goal is to make company pay the most money to show articles. Iirc, when this was proposed, Jeff Bazos said that this was the most stupid idea he ever heard. I think the reason why it was introduced, and why Executives don't want to change it, is that it generates a ton of money for Amazon. I'd personally love if in the end this would be the reason that Amazon stop making money and it would have been some short sighted greedy move. I'm afraid that advertisement, when it comes down to numbers, is just damn too profitable.
napo··on Gemini 2.5 Flash Image
when giving more context it replied:

""" Unfortunately, I can't generate images of people. My purpose is to be helpful and harmless, and creating realistic images of humans can be misused in ways that are harmful. This is a safety policy that helps prevent the generation of deepfakes, non-consensual imagery, and other problematic content.

If you'd like to try a different image prompt, I can help you create images of a wide range of other subjects, such as animals, landscapes, objects, or abstract concepts. """

napo··on Gemini 2.5 Flash Image
it said: "I can create images about lots of things but not that. Can I try a different one for you?"
napo··on OpenMower – An open source lawn mower
Nice!

How much time did it take you from the moment you started the project to the point where it fell like it was up & running?

napo··on Persuasion methods for engineering managers
Now that we have this list, we should pay close attention to its use. If someone uses these especially for personal gain, and especially at the company’s expense, it should be addressed. A company should value truth. We should not rely on persuasion tricks.
napo··on Japan’s Temple-Builder Kongō Gumi, Has Survived Nearly 1,500 Years
Then let's put one of this well-positioned black hole in all photons' trajectories.
napo··on Reality Labs has lost $11.4B during 2023 (there's still one quarter left)
I heartily agree with you, but on this point:

> and they have some cracking games that get you hooked

My main issue with VR is that I only got hooked to Beat Saber. There are some other titles that I quite liked (I expect you to die, demeo), but they never had other games, to the level of Beat Saber, for me to be really excited with the platform.

napo··on Interviews in the Age of AI: Ditch Leetcode – Try Code Reviews Instead
why opting for an "home assignment" instead of doing that as part of the interview?
napo··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
For me it says "unavailable" on all items. Is it the case for everyone? I'm wondering if it's because I'm based in France or if it's sold out.
napo··on 33% of Gamers Are Disabled
the subtitle of the article does say "Despite nearly a third of gamers identifying as being disabled"
napo··on When to invest in marketing
> direct outreach to key customers

are you talking about b2b?

I don't know what you have in mind. Sounds like you are suggesting companies should start calling me or knocking on my door instead of puting ads on google search results. That doesn't sound great.

napo··on Firefox has surpassed Chrome on Speedometer
I'm a bit confused by the UI. Looks like the test is for windows. Did someone manage to test it for Linux and MacOS as well? (not sure what test we are supposed to use)
napo··on Simpsons Hit and Run source code (2003)
The product that he is releasing are the videos of him remaking the game.
napo··on Fractal Vise
Would be nice if it had some springs to have the different parts try to go back to their original position by themselves.
napo··on French govt. says users of uBlock Origin, Signal etc. are potential terrorists
"the French people did not care that they had to sign a paper to get out to walk"

1- Don't you think this is quite political? Like what is your benefit from saying this out of context? If signing this paper and being stricter helped the hospitals not being saturated and saved x thousands lives do you still think it was a bad thing? (I'm not even saying that's the case I'm just saying you don't seem to take that possibility into account at all)

2- From my observations French people -constently- complain about this. So I wouldn't say they didn't care about it. You're doing it right now.

napo··on When feedback is not a gift
I understand it that way too.

For me it's about how you should react when you get a gift. If a relative offers you something that you don't like, you still appreciate the gesture.

Feedback is a gift, but not all gifts are good ones.

napo··on SparseGPT: Language Models Can Be Accurately Pruned in One-Shot
It sounds nice (maybe too nice?). I always wanted to see that it would be necessary to have a "sleeping" phase in AI.

It always felt weird that we have to sleep, it doesn't seem to give any evolutionary advantages.

napo··on Max Verstappen got blank screen while leading virtual Le Man 24 hr, retires
I might be wrong but I think they are suggesting that Max's game could be pause. The time the bug is fixed. And then resumed.
napo··on [dead]
ah, good catch! I suspect this just got added though
napo··on [dead]
It's confusing. It feels like it's written as a joke to highlight that we shouldn't feel bad to get interviews rejections. But It's missing the punchline.
napo··on The Problem with Go
Asking for code to be reviewed within one day worked well in the teams I worked with. Some pple likes to do it in the morning before starting the rest of their day. And if someone has something urgent or small they can always ping the team.

I can understand than for changes in a language it's a bit more involved than that though.

Also, I'm really curious about teams that do reviews after merge. I heard some places do it but I never really got a good understanding of the pros&cons

napo··on Diem – Facebook open source Cryptocurrency written in Rust
I wanted to invest but I don't see where it talks about VR, ML and microservices
