nathanh··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2016)
Teachers Pay Teachers | NYC | Full-Time | Engineers, Product Managers, Product Designers

Teachers Pay Teachers is a community of millions of educators who come together to share their work, their insights, and their inspiration with one another. We are the first and largest open marketplace where teachers share, sell, and buy original educational resources. Since we've started, authors on Teachers Pay Teachers have earned over $200M. Here's a bit more of the backstory (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/06/technology/a-sharing-econo...).

Our engineering culture focuses on Fearless Development (http://engineering.teacherspayteachers.com/2015/10/11/the-fe...), curiosity, learning, and autonomy.

I'd be happy to chat about positions over email at nhurst@teacherspayteachers.com.

TeachersPayTeachers - http://www.teacherspayteachers.com (TpT) New York, NY

We're building out a new engineering team at an established startup in Ed-Tech. TeachersPayTeachers is the world's first and biggest online open marketplace where teachers buy, sell, and share original educational materials. Our community of over 3 million active teachers connects and shares knowledge on the site every day, and has generated over $100 million in sales of some of the best, original, most creative classroom resources. Where you come in: although the company has a lot of users and strong reputation, only now are we building out our NYC engineering team to build out TpT's future. This a green field opportunity to set the engineering culture and how we organize ourselves going forward while maintaining an app at high traffic and still growing!

nathanh··on AMC movie theater calls FBI to arrest a Google Glass user
At what point does Google Glass become an accessibility device? At some point, people with a hearing impairment will be able to read subtitles on Glass. Then it will be practically impossible to ban.

nathanh··on Show HN: GiftMating - gift ideas based on things your giftees already love
That's a great idea! I'm trying to think what the best approach for picking the items from the list would be. Maybe start with things in the same category - ex: movies vs books. Alternatively, it could try a bunch of combinations and only report the best based on some sort of "diversity of results" score.
nathanh··on Show HN: GiftMating - gift ideas based on things your giftees already love
Thanks for the kind words! Just updated the link - great catch.
nathanh··on Show HN: GiftMating - gift ideas based on things your giftees already love
Each year I've had a secret I use to find gifts for people: go to Amazon, find two things I know my gift recipient likes, then compare the "similar items" section to find matches. It's kind of tedious to do, but it works like a charm. This year, I made a GiftMating to do the same things with less effort.

Tech behind the scenes: Rails, Zurb Foundation, Amazon Product Advertising API

PS: really loving Foundation as an alternative to Bootstrap - you get a responsive layout that you can use by specifying the grid in css instead of in html.

nathanh··on Don't hire only self-described awesome developers
Thanks for catching this (Xcelerate below too). I'm updating the post to reflect it (having some trouble with caching on Posterous it appears though).
nathanh··on Don't hire only self-described awesome developers
When I see job post titles like these, sometimes I find myself trying to give the company the benefit of the doubt and assume that they're just bragging about themselves instead of asking developers to evaluate themselves ("awesome developer" => "awesome job for a developer").

It's fine to brag, but they can do so much better than a single dimensional word like awesome. All companies think they're awesome. I'd love it if they took the time to express the subtleties of WHY they think they're awesome.

p.s. Thanks for the comment. I read a lot of your writing and appreciate the perspective.

nathanh··on Warning signs in a non-technical cofounder (can you spot them?)
One thing I've been wondering a lot about is anti-warning signs - things that turn technical cofounders off that aren't necessarily bad things.

The first thing that comes to mind is arrogance. It certainly puts me off, but it seems like you need a good dose of arrogance to think you can solve a daunting problem.

Additionally, a few people have noted some terms that I need to merge. I'll try to update the graphs within a few hours.

nathanh··on My Worst Phone Screen
Thanks for the feedback Ben. I post the articles on HN when I publish them. Maybe next time, I won't publish them to HN and see if the readers do it on their own.

I was under the impression that self-posts were not frowned upon. I've found some of the best content here to be self-posts.

nathanh··on My Worst Phone Screen
I try to make sure Posterous attributes them to me (see the end of this post for an example).

If people don't find them interesting, I can stop posting them. I had been under the impression that self-posts were fine. Most of the time, we're trying to be an advocate for job seekers (currently just developers) in a market that is very company friendly.

nathanh··on My Worst Phone Screen
It wrote the post - glad it was amusing. It happened about 2 years ago while I was at a startup in NYC that was tanking. I was thinking of jumping ship before the eventual collapse. The problems I experienced during this particular job search led me to eventually start Hirelite.
nathanh··on My Worst Phone Screen
I just updated the title from "My Worst Interview" to "My Worst Phone Screen" to be more clear.
nathanh··on Ask HN: Any start-ups looking for remote or Austin based .NET developers?
My company hosts speed interviewing events over video chat to connect developers and companies hiring. We are hosting an Austin event on 4/12 and are currently signing up companies to participate. You can keep an eye on which companies are hiring here: http://www.hirelite.com/events/1012025199/jobs
