neapolisbeach··on Time-Lock Puzzles in the Random Oracle Model (2011)
If you're interested in time-lock puzzles, drand [1] achieves this but through randomness instead of computational effort.

neapolisbeach··on Ask HN: What is the most interesting software you wrote in a few days?
I built a similar scheme for a class project, but relying on verifiable delay functions [1] to provide the time lock.

Might be something you’re interested in.

neapolisbeach··on TurboTax’s fight against free tax filing
The state is free if you make under a certain amount which was the case for me. I ended up just paying the $15 rather than re-entering anything.
neapolisbeach··on TurboTax’s fight against free tax filing
I used FreeTaxUSA this year to file and was happy with them except for a pretty dark pattern.

If you google "FreeTaxUSA" and log-in that way, it'll change your free-file account to a paid account and there is no way to change it back. To free-file with them, you need to always log in using the special IRS link.

I thought this was pretty annoying, especially as there's no way for customer service to change it back. Their recommendation was to make a new account and re-enter all my tax info.

neapolisbeach··on The best engineering interview question I've ever gotten
I was asked this questions this past fall as part of the 1st technical screen for a SWE intern. I think there was 45 minutes to do it.

After I had two more technical interviews where I got asked more traditional leetcody questions.

neapolisbeach··on Guide to Doing Radio Astronomy with RPi and SDR [pdf]
I've had a lot of fun doing Hydrogen line backyard astronomy. I wrote up an article on my experience [1]. These are two great sites as well [2][3].

neapolisbeach··on Ask HN: Is there a changelog equivalent for the U.S. government?
Not specifically the government, but there is a github[0] for amendments to the Constitution.

neapolisbeach··on A worry junior engineers frequently have is that they ask too many questions
I've found slack (or other asynchronous tools) to be helpful for this. I'm able to ask a question without actively interrupting someones work. Once they get to a breaking point they can respond.
neapolisbeach··on Why are boys academically underperforming? [audio]
When I was in elementary and middle school (early 2010s) his books were very popular. I remember reading Percy Jackson & the Olympians and later The Kane Chronicles and The Heroes of Olympus.

From personal experience, Rick Riordan's series had similar interest levels between girls and boys but later series (Hunger Games, House of Night, Fault in Our Stars) did skew towards girls. My reading also fell off as I got older so I'm sure I wasn't as in touch with what my peers were reading.

neapolisbeach··on More Than 70 West Point Cadets Accused of Cheating in Academic Scandal
That doesn't really apply in this case-- for service academies student's are all on a full-scholarship and are paid a stipend.

If anything it would be cheaper to kick them out. But that is at odds with the goal (competent service-members).

neapolisbeach··on Ask HN: What are some of yesteryear's buzz words that no-one cares about today?
Big data
neapolisbeach··on Ask HN: Does your company intercept HTTPS? What are alternatives?
I can't speak to how common the practice is but it's often an option on firewalls. My understanding of the reasoning behind it is that it allows the company to monitor employees usage of the network to protect from data exfiltration and malware that uses HTTPS.

It's usually done as part of a firewall that will MITM traffic on the network.

neapolisbeach··on Survey: 83% of US teens have an iPhone, Android 9%
As a current student this is a huge part of it.

People with androids (green messages) will not be added to group chats because it turns everyone else's messages green. When making plans they will usually get texted individually but it can unintentionally lead to exclusion.

Texting someone with an android is much less convenient than using an iPhone and anecdotally this is one reason kids choose iPhones over Android.
