nejsjsjsbsb··on Anthropic: "Applicants should not use AI assistants"
Then they shouldn't use libraries, open source code or even existing compilers. They shouldn't search online (man pages is OK). They should use git plumbing commands and sh (not bash of zsh). They should not have potable water in there house but distill river water.
nejsjsjsbsb··on Anthropic: "Applicants should not use AI assistants"
Not new they had that 5 years ago at least.

Anthropic interview is nebulous. You get a coding interview. Fast paced, little time, 100% pass mark.

Then they chat to you for half an hour to gauge your ethics. Maybe I was too honest :)

I'm really bad at the "essay" subjects vsm the "hard" subjects so at that point I was dumped.

nejsjsjsbsb··on Patterns for Personal Web Sites (2003)
I used to think creating a CHM was peak professionalism. I'm a mini Microsoft!

Actually I'd go back to CHMs for docs. A modern reader would be good tho.

nejsjsjsbsb··on Global variables are not the problem
Man, the bugs they prevent. Vs everyone rolling their own multithreaded file reader/writer code in C. How many programmers would think to journal transactions and ship them for backup for example.

SQL or 15000 lines of C++ or Go or Rust doing whatever with files.

nejsjsjsbsb··on Global variables are not the problem
What does the ideal look like then? Data storage encapsulation in the app? Perhaps different DB users with granular access, accessed from different non-global parts of the program. Chuck in some views later when you need performance pragmatism!
nejsjsjsbsb··on Global variables are not the problem
Your program is also one giant type.
nejsjsjsbsb··on Patterns for Personal Web Sites (2003)
It is slow. Like geocities.

Interesting concept http://www.rdrop.com/~half/Creations/Writings/Web.patterns/d...
nejsjsjsbsb··on Fake thinking and real thinking
They really mean crap not fake. If you use a nail where a screw is needed, that is crap.
nejsjsjsbsb··on Why do War Thunder players leak classified information? [video]
Performance art of many HN exchanges on non-startup/cs topics.
nejsjsjsbsb··on UK betting giant's unlawful marketing kept suicidal gambler hooked
Podiatry?
nejsjsjsbsb··on Ask HN: Should Canadian companies leave AWS in preparation for cut?
Can't AWS just restructure to have a Canadian subsidiary if that happens? Maybe they have this already. Unless they ban ownership of foreign companies.
nejsjsjsbsb··on Ask HN: Is software engineering just patching APIs and wrangling Kubernetes?
There is no money for the employees in consolidation and boring tech.

Outside of the US, career driven development (CDD) might be needed to get your salary to a level you can say ... have a family. Or for some ... afford rent. Therefore my salary is dependent on me not understanding development Zen!

Then with an army of CDDs there is a tide that is hard to swim against.

Making it worse is how we interview people and any heroics you did at the last job are worth 0c but ability to talk about GraphQL and advanced TS and AWS are worth, dunno, $20k.

nejsjsjsbsb··on Ask HN: Do the tarrifs impact software/SaaS? If so, how?
Genuine question!
nejsjsjsbsb··on Ask HN: Recommendations for Running LLMs Locally

    docker run -d -v ollama:/root/.ollama -p 11434:11434 --name ollama ollama/ollama

docker exec -it ollama ollama run llama3.2:1b
Have a chat at the CLI

Then try bigger models if that is too fast for you :)

nejsjsjsbsb··on Ask HN: Percent of employees that benefit financially from equity offers?
You can sell the RSU tranche the day you get it though right? So it like cash. Unfortunately that also means for tax purposes.
nejsjsjsbsb··on Ask HN: Do the tarrifs impact software/SaaS? If so, how?
What about contracting? Hourly rates? Employment?
nejsjsjsbsb··on Ask HN: Do the tarrifs impact software/SaaS? If so, how?
Yep at all levels. Chinese businesses planning their next 5 years may want to diversify away from US customers. US people voted for unhinged presidents is the clear message.
nejsjsjsbsb··on Smart fabric heats up under the sun
50-90 latitude it might be useful plus mountains.

Might be good for daytime heating of a tent?

nejsjsjsbsb··on Avoid ISP Routers (2024)
What about: I use the ISP router for support convenience then I turn off its wifi and daisy chain a second router I set up?
nejsjsjsbsb··on RLHF Book

nejsjsjsbsb··on You are asking the wrong question; 3D print business advice [video]
Posting this because it is really general business advice and applicable to startups!
nejsjsjsbsb··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
Why Trump won is an interesting topic. There is a mixture of reasons but I think high up there was Biden pulling out last minute and Kamala being unpopular with little time to do a campaign. She also had the backfoot of having been in power while there was inflation and support for the Gaza genocide. Therefore Trump won less then Kamala lost.

There is a subreddit dedicate to people both democrats who refused to vote, as well as Trump voters whose policies as promised would severely harm them and their family's interesf (severe as in life/death). Why did they vote against their interests.

For example anyone on any kind of benefits, or whose mum and dad are, vets or if your cousin or uncle is one, Latino, even if you are from a long line of american citizens you may have friends who are 1st gen. More generally anyone not white, male and in the top 5-10% of wealth. Because tariffs won't be good for poor people. And poor is probably: under $1m assets.

Google trends for tariffs surged after the election. People voted on feelings. Anger, despair or some sense of "Trump means them not me" or maybe "He is successful in business so he must be good".

Unfortunately the rational thing to do often sucks eggs!

What is going on: the internet is letting you know all this shit. Imagine you had a ticker feed of every story amongst the 8bn. That would be a crazy story per millisecond.
nejsjsjsbsb··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
Scared to click the link!
nejsjsjsbsb··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'

Your about tells me you could make this comment way more specifically and with evidence.
nejsjsjsbsb··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
Probable cause is the key term here.

Cops can do a lot without it. They can choose what leads to follow.

But not sure what you are suggesting with respect to wiretapping.

nejsjsjsbsb··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
Wow. Didn't they learn about ecosystems at school. And who says they are suffering?

Why buy a conference space. Most pubs will give you a seperate room if you promise to spend some money at the bar. There are probably free spaces had they researched.

If I am donating money and you are buying a conference space on day 1 I'd want it to be filled with experienced ex-UN field type of people and Nobel peace prize winners.

Otherwise it looks like a grift.
