nephy··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
Can we move on to the next grift yet?
nephy··on NASA reconnected with Voyager 1 after a brief pause
True, but what percentage of phone owners will actually do this. Less than a fraction of a percent? The remaining 99 percent chuck their phone in a landfill when it gets slow.
nephy··on Chain-of-thought can hurt performance on tasks where thinking makes humans worse
If you give an LLM a word problem that involves the same math and change the names of the people in the word problem the LLM will likely generate different mathematical results. Without any knowledge of how any of this works, that seems pretty damning of the fact that LLMs do not reason. They are predictive text models. That’s it.
nephy··on How I write code using Cursor
I find LLM’s to be much worse than the junior engineers I work with. I have tried copilot and I always end up disabling it because it’s often wrong and annoying. Just read the docs for the things you are using folks. We don’t need to burn the rainforest for autocomplete.

Dog no they don’t lol. My family has been in both ecosystems over the years and by far the iPhones outlast the Android phones they buy both in quality and in updates.
nephy··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
Yeah, it’s annoying, but the polyfill is like 3 lines.
nephy··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
I think that would probably fall outside the norm. My information might be outdated, but I was under the impression that JavaScript usually wins in most algorithm benchmarks because the JIT is so good.
nephy··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
I literally use BigInt on the backend every single day at work lol.
nephy··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
I’m really tired of this discourse. The JavaScript ecosystem is the lingua franca of the web. Furthermore, while a segment of the programming community has sat around complaining, JavaScript has gotten really good and continues to improve every passing year. Incremental progress is the key to making progress, not giant paradigm shifts.
nephy··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
WASM is slower than running JavaScript on V8 in almost all scenarios and will likely continue to be for a very long time. Also, many of us don’t want a compile step.
nephy··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
The US government needs to fast track breaking up Google asap. Chrome needs to be torn from their festering lich hands, so that the web can be free of their self serving, and frankly bad, proposals.
nephy··on Windows 10 begins one-year countdown to end of support
I gave up a few years ago and decided that I was willing to deal with any drawbacks of buying and playing games on consoles rather than dealing with Windows. I only have so much time to sit down and enjoy myself and I would rather not fiddle if I just want to play a game. It turns out that you can buy a PS5 and a Switch for less than the price of a decent midrange gaming rig.
nephy··on Helene Should Trigger a National Rethink of Home Insurance
Insurance companies are best incentivized and informed to make themselves a requirement, take your money, and then resist all efforts to actually pay you when you need them.
nephy··on Helene Should Trigger a National Rethink of Home Insurance
Yes, and that rethink should be that insurance of all forms is a racket.
nephy··on Helene Should Trigger a National Rethink of Home Insurance
I live 2 hours away from the mountains of North Carolina. I grew up in the foothills. You have no idea what you are talking about. People aren’t rebuilding here, “over and over.” This was a climate disaster full stop. If we as a species don’t get our shit together and stop poisoning our planet this will keep happening.
nephy··on Meta Movie Gen
McDonald’s art.
nephy··on Ryujinx (Nintendo Switch emulator) has been removed from GitHub
These projects really need to start standing up their own Gitea or Gitlab instances and mirroring to GitHub.

It also cracks me up every time I see legalistic apologists on this website backing up giant corporations.

A) Who cares about the law? It’s rarely moral. B) Which laws should we follow? The internet exists in every country.

nephy··on Building a highly-available web service without a database
No I haven’t because it’s quite complicated. Databases are very much a solved problem. Unfortunately, this architecture is going to be nigh impossible to hire for and when it goes absolutely sideways recovery will be difficult.
nephy··on Building a highly-available web service without a database
I’m honestly not sure what you are talking about. In my experience, Redis is super easy to run and manage in production.
nephy··on Building a highly-available web service without a database
We didn’t want to build something complicated, so we implemented our own raft consensus layer. Have you considered just using Redis?
nephy··on Target to stop accepting personal checks as form of payment
It’s unfortunate, but they have to curb rampant shoplifting somehow. I can’t think of a better solution off the top of my head.
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
Natural gas from the county.
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
I have a fan with 5 speeds that sucks a lot of air. The stove is on an exterior wall and vents directly to the side of my house. I’m not really concerned about it.
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
I assure you that I am just a normal software engineer that happens to live in South Carolina. This is a matter of practicality for me. If induction became more practical for my family, I would make the switch. The incentives just don’t add up yet where I live.
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
I use an electric kettle for this.
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
Totally agree, thank you for the balanced response. Most builders where I live install gas by default. I may have considered induction if I was building from scratch, but it’s really not worth it for us right now. Especially knowing the sources of our electricity at the moment.
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
As opposed to my electricity, which is mostly produced by a coal plant?
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
No, but my electric company buried tons of coal ash that leaked into the surrounding water table.
nephy··on Gas utilities used tobacco tactics to avoid gas stove regulations
I have a gas range, gas water heater, gas logs, and gas backup heat. My gas bill is around $15 a month. My home has proper ventilation to the outside and I have no intention of converting a cheap gas bill into a high electric bill.
