nerdb4itwascool··on I bought 300 emoji domain names from Kazakhstan and built an email service
OP sort of deserves this. His little commercial there shows the diamond hands emoji but he never registered it
nerdb4itwascool··on Simplifying Board Games
I agree that the trend is for more "things" on the table, but there are still plenty of new games coming out with an eye on simplicity. Give Azul a try -- it's nothing but tiles (20 each of 5 different colors) and a board to help you count. Simple, elegant and deeper than expected
nerdb4itwascool··on RoughViz: JS library for creating sketchy/hand-drawn style charts in the browser
This is a really fun library, it'd be great for a blog or personal website. A business site? maybe not so much...
nerdb4itwascool··on Patagonia's Philosopher King (2016)
Chouinard is quoted about this in the article:

“But I’ve become cynical about whether we can have any influence,” Chouinard said. “Everyone’s just greenwashing. The revolution isn’t going to happen with corporations. The elephant in the room is growth. Growth is the culprit.”

Great story, thanks for sharing. Chipper Bro is THE MAN, he deserves the pay he gets!

I have never been into an HQ as welcoming as Patagonia's. The cafeteria alone is worth a visit!

nerdb4itwascool··on Patagonia's Philosopher King (2016)
I've done a lot of work with Patagonia, visited their HQ numerous times, and have become friends with a handful of their employees. They are not driven by profit, but by a will to do what is right in the world and for their customers. This all starts and ends with Yvon. This is how you build a culture. It should be studied for generations.

I can't express how great they are to work with as a client -- smart people and everyone's heart is in the right place.

"When it grows to about 1,000 members, he added, it can hire its first support person."

Volunteer-based initiatives can turn into companies if they're successful. Hopefully that's the case here.

nerdb4itwascool··on Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Campus
I am also an NYC resident and followed this story closely. There was an immediate, knee-jerk reaction from local politicians when the announcement was made, often in the form of protests with plenty of photo ops. It was not about how to work with Amazon and the community to create something that works for everyone. Instead, their message was "WE DON'T WANT THIS, GET OUT NOW!"

At the end of the day, this city needs to curb its reliance on finance jobs. Adding 25k tech workers would be a major step forward to making NY more of a tech hub than it is today. Kicking out Amazon sends a message to other large companies who are thinking about NYC -- buyer beware.

nerdb4itwascool··on Apple leaves Facebook offices in disarray after revoking app permissions
My co-worker put it best: "This is Uber-level scumminess"
nerdb4itwascool··on Slack Is Buying HipChat from Atlassian
The big fish (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple) will continue to buy smaller companies until governments steps in and breaks them up in an anti-trust suit. The EU will lead that charge. The writing is on the wall.
nerdb4itwascool··on Apple updates its 12-inch MacBook with faster chip, but no extra USB
I stopped using my iPad completely when I got the new Macbook. it's just as light, the screen is better, it's more comfortable to hold, and the keyboard is fantastic.
nerdb4itwascool··on Apple updates its 12-inch MacBook with faster chip, but no extra USB
I write apps for iPhone. I have a dongle that gives me power, connects to my iPhone, and connects to an extra monitor.

I'd rather carry around a dongle that weighs less than an ounce than add 2 lbs of weight to my laptop to accomadate more ports

nerdb4itwascool··on Apple updates its 12-inch MacBook with faster chip, but no extra USB
I have the dongle with USB, HDMI and USB-C. I have not hit a scenario where I was searching for another port, and I've had the machine since launch.

Honestly, it's a great laptop and is far more functional than those (who have not used one) are lead to believe. My only gripe is video playback can be laggy with hi-def videos. It sounds like they're trying to fix that problem with the new model.

nerdb4itwascool··on Apple updates its 12-inch MacBook with faster chip, but no extra USB
I own the new MacBook and have been surprised at how little impact the single port has had on my day to day life. I use it for work, and it's actually nice to come into the office and only need to plug into one port instead of the three I used to plug into (power, HDMI for monitor, usb->lightning adapter). I don't understand the outrage over fewer ports, it's an easy trade-off for me given how thin, light and portable this laptop is.
nerdb4itwascool··on Manifold.js – Create mobile apps from websites
My team just got a Cordova app through the apple review process as of yesterday. So, data point #2! I think as long as you try to adhere to Apple's app review guidelines it doesn't matter if you used Cordova or developed natively
