netc··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
A phone given for repair by a non-technical person can be rooted without their knowledge. The repair person potentially can install malware. We cannot assume the owners of the rooted phone themselves have rooted the phone.

Taken to the extreme conclusion, governments can potentially charge different tax rates to different individuals based on their inability to sue or inability to fight back. They may completely forego the notion of income based tax brackets . /s

netc··on Qualcomm wants to replace eSIMs with iSIMs, has the first certified SoC
> That really depends on the carrier.

That's the point. Now, suddenly carrier has more powers than they should. Having a standard where consumer is in charge is much more desirable than the other way around.

> This is more convenient than having to search for the SIM removal tool. Then let the manufacturer know that a SIM tray without the need of SIM removal tool is your preference.

netc··on Ask HN: Is there a good reason why I can't set my oven below 200F?
For me, keeping the light in the oven on keeps it bit warm. I haven't measured the temperature though. YMMV.

netc··on What Silicon Valley gets about engineers that traditional companies do not
Recently I had a discussion about an SV company with a friend in Texas. I mentioned to him, the company X is going to do great as they hire very good engineers. His question was - "what does that have to do good engineers?" Go figure ...

Please just re-read your comment replacing Facebook with either your phone service or email service or USPS. What you said applies to all these three. People are complaining because Facebook gives the perception of connecting people but fails without notifying.
netc··on $40 road tolls offer insight into commuter psychology
A big reason of income gap is opportunity gap. We keep widening the opportunity gap by adding 'fast lanes' to people who can afford it, rather than improving the situation for all. In this particular case, perhaps, there is no short term solution to improve for all but it makes me little sad anyway.
netc··on iPhone X
It is a common case for other iOS device(s) though. iPad in a family is usually shared across family members. I do wish apple add this feature in iOS, for iPads at least.
netc··on How Immigration Uncertainty Threatens America’s Tech Dominance
>The entire point of capitalism is not everyone get's what they want and price how that is decided.

You mean protected capitalism - protected by artificial minimum wages put in place by government?

netc··on Rent Control Creates Higher Rents in SF
Have you ever looked at the possibility where one's family has to move every year or so because landlord decided to increase rent to 'catch up' with market. This is what it looks like in communities where lot of people wants to move in but no rent control. One can move in but will not have any stability.
netc··on Tmux 1.9 released
Not sure if you tried following for input/output multiplexing - * Create 5 panes, one for each server * Ctrl-b :setw synchronize-panes

This should synchronize the input to all panes i.e. type in any one and it will be sent to all 5. to turn it off, just run the same command again. I don't know if tmux has equivalent synchronize-windows.

netc··on Mandatory bicycle helmet law in New Zealand
Thanks. I do agree better infrastructure will make bike riding safer. In my opinion helmet is to bike what seat belt is to car. In general, I'd agree that people should make their own decisions and government do not need to make laws. But I have met couple of families who do not care about seat belt, even for their kids! How do you make such people understand the value of seat belt? Helmet is perhaps in similar situation. Not everyone is able to understand the value of safety devices and as a society we don't want them or their kids to get injured. Making something a law allows other to help such families - we can simply call out "it's a law"
netc··on Mandatory bicycle helmet law in New Zealand
I guess you are lucky. I had a fall which could had taken me to ER. It happened when I was relatively new to road bike and tried to enter a drive way like a car. Wheel of my bike trammed along the road and sidewalk (about 2 inches high). I lost balance, took a fall on concrete sidewalk. Right side of my helmet took the hit. The impact was severe enough, it was dark (not pitch dark) in front of my eyes for next few seconds. However, I was able to bike back after 15 mins of rest. I can't imagine doing that without the helmet.

netc··on "Disable Javascript" option removed in Firefox 23
Well, an extra phrase might be added in the menu where 'Disable Javascript' appears - '(Note: Javascript is not same as Java)'. If users don't know the difference between Diesel and Gasoline, better option is to educate them in context (e.g. handle of fuel pump) rather than closing down all Diesel pumps.

netc··on The $2.7 Trillion Medical Bill
Let's say some policies are changed in EU and pharmaceutical companies make as much or more profit in EU as in US - do you think they will reduce the cost of drugs in US? Perhaps not - remember they have shareholders. They probably aren't going to say, "oh! we have made enough money on this drug. Let's reduce the price now.".
