netdevphoenix··on Xbox wants you to pay 24 to 40 cents per hour to stream games you bought
Remember, Uber used to be dirty cheap too in the beginning. Netflix used to be dirty cheap in the beginning. All main subscriptions follow the same lifecycle. Don't expect it to be cheap forever.

Or for long.

netdevphoenix··on Maxwell: A new kind of model that sits between code and hardware
Is the JIT as good as an AI model for a specific Java program?
netdevphoenix··on How to Formalize All of Mathematics
The article is not meant just for you.
netdevphoenix··on How to Formalize All of Mathematics
Then, "All of Mathematics" is being used as clickbait.
netdevphoenix··on Governments are mishandling the affordability crisis
That's classic HN showing off their privilege. But the golden era of tech is coming to an end. The industrialisation of software is about to begin. Many of the devs here will soon be getting a reality check
netdevphoenix··on Sorry we made you grind LeetCode
What they are actually saying is: "Because our OG product (leetcode style tests) is now obsolete, we can now jump on the leetcode hate trend and use that to sell our new product".
netdevphoenix··on Claude partial outage
Imagine having a bunch of Claude agents doing time sensitive work and this happens and now a single human needs to pick up several 8k PRs authored by bots that can't talk to you now. Not sure how effective it would be to switch models using OpenRouter and the like given that, as the Earendil guys said, there is a lot of session detail that the provider doesn't share. The uptime is really going to cap their market penetration imo.
netdevphoenix··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
It's pointless as the problem isn't technical. It's a human problem as it requires human supervision. A cage isn't good if no human is actually checking it.
netdevphoenix··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
What is PMM?
netdevphoenix··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
To be honest, that's the fault of the websites themselves. Google is just an amplifier of a world web wide problem.
netdevphoenix··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
> "I am one person and I deal with code to get my product my built." From that POV, has it ever been better, assuming you can rise to the top of an ever more crowded market?

Building a product is easier now, same way making a photograph is easier now. Making a reliable and high income living out of it though, it looks increasingly uncertain.

In a world with abundant music and photography, just saying that you made your music using Reason/ProTools or you made your photograph with a Leica isn't enough. I believe the same will happen with software. Sales, product design, customer service and operational aspects like uptime will matter more than the software itself. Ironically, this is the kind of stuff the HN type highly dislikes.

>If you are product-driven, life is pretty good, and maybe has never been better

It has certainly been better for junior devs, mid devs, anyone looking for zirp era salary growth and supply demand ratios. For a senior code-adverse coaster looking forward to see his static salary get eaten by inflation, life has indeed never been better.

netdevphoenix··on Don't Use AI to Write
Anyone who has learned a language knows this anecdotally. The linguistic structures need to be marshalled by active cognition (editing and writing). Merely reading and watching is not enough.
netdevphoenix··on The Claude Delusion
So Searle was right.
netdevphoenix··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
Yes, but part of the reason ZuckOff is trending now is because it is also popular outside tech circles.
netdevphoenix··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
> Dishwasher rinse aid in beverages happened yesterday but I’ve also had makeup remover in condiments

I am sorry but could you explain the meaning of this sentence?

netdevphoenix··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
Agent technology labs are likely exempted of this due to the significance ascribed to their work.
netdevphoenix··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
Yeah, you have to have some level of involvement. It's crazy that we are actually talking of 100% dev involvement to literally 0% involvement.
netdevphoenix··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
It seems to me that chances of misalignment are a function of accumulated usage time. Eventually, it will happen.
netdevphoenix··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
> Yes I still vibe unit test and integration test,

False sense of security. What's stopping the agents from doing an elaborate form of "Assert.IsTrue(true)" in some/most/all of the tests since you are vibing it and not reviewing it?

netdevphoenix··on My business partner sent a 5K vibe-coded PR that he didn't even test
Look at the COBOL devs. They are been called in their retirement years. You don't want that to be you. Life is short
netdevphoenix··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Because safety isn't a priority at OpenAI and they had (have?) been falling behind Anthropic in the LLM race? Big fans of the saying: move fast and...
netdevphoenix··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
Arguably, if the website does not have a positive value and only negative, the logical thing is to shut it down and keep the Google Business profile imo. I assume she has been paying for the domain name all this years too or is it a subdomain?
netdevphoenix··on American Airlines mechanic Azriel “Al” Blackman has died
> It takes four years of education before becoming a taxi driver in London

That doesn't apply to private hire vehicle drivers afaik.

netdevphoenix··on Overcooked? Why robotic pizza makers are failing
> Food should be prepared with love

You forgot about the sentient non-veg elements that also get added to it. Is that done with love too?

netdevphoenix··on How much of HN is AI?
> I can't tell the difference so what does it matter?

Eternal September. Just like the usenet groups

netdevphoenix··on How much of HN is AI?
> it's advancing fast

Actually, it (LLM models) has been advancing slower for a while. This is pretty much in the mainstream. And the current approach is facing all sorts of obstacles that are not exclusively technological. The compute needs are no longer sustainable. Financially, big labs are drowning in debt and backlash against data centres has grown so much that it has become an electoral topic in at least one major country.

netdevphoenix··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
> This is a very VC focused lens

Just like mostly everything he writes about.

netdevphoenix··on AI-Generated GitHub Copilot “Autofix” Allowed Compromise of Snowflake's Jira
> But yes, there is an interesting change in the past decade, where everything new must be over-hyped.

Yep, the good old "Our tech is making the world a better place" has gotten old and a new approach was needed. If you are not making standard databases obsolete with a blockchain or MapReduce or gaining business enlightenment from Big Data, no one wants to fund your startup. Civilisation level change is the new upper bound.

netdevphoenix··on AI-Generated GitHub Copilot “Autofix” Allowed Compromise of Snowflake's Jira
Difference is you are not a trillion dollar plus technology hyped as a harbinger of civilisational change.
