netsharc··on Show HN: SlideBySide – Present slides without sharing your screen
Number 1 feature: live cursors. Yeah, it makes people go wow, but I hope it can be switched off. Nothing less useful than having random movement distracting people from whatever I'm presenting...
netsharc··on A Health Update
Ah, I feel a kinship.. in 2007 I got an iPhone, followed the guide to install the homebrew SDK on Linux, and managed to get it to work to create iPhone apps. At first they'd run on jailbroken phones (there was a command to "sign" them), later I installed a Hackintosh and XCode and even got the Apple Dev program subscription and sold one app on their store.
netsharc··on Passengers injured after collision between bus and delivery robot in Tallinn
Yeah, what a weird "conclusion".

If I was walking my dog, let it off the leash, and it ran into the middle of the road, causing a bus to brake and some people to be hurt, will I get into trouble for negligence?

Looks like the company will get into some shit for the same issue.

I was incredulous, I wondered what sort of LoC does book rankings like it's Buzzfeed, I thought "Maybe it's the LoC after a Trump-infestation or DOGE", but (1):

> In 1991 the Book of the Month Club and Library of Congress asked readers to name the most influential book in their lives: Atlas Shrugged came in second only to the Bible.

The fact that you equate a survey result (who knows who heard of the survey, or if there was a campaign to skew the results) to the LoC giving it a rating, and "that's why I read it", and you think this is a good rebuttal, reveals to me a lot about you.

I can, but in this instance I don't care to fulfill your wishes. If you can't figure out the difference, you're on your own.

netsharc··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
I wonder if the excess energy could be used to do things like run carbon capture (although I've read that this is very much a pipe dream, that it'll take several magnitudes more carbon capture facilities to counter what we're currently producing).

In a very tiny Canary Island, their battery is many many tonnes of water pumped uphill when they have windpower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXhAj5BHdfM

OP wrote: "difficult task"...

It's just a crappy render of a Windows VM's display, in all it's upscaled pixelated glory, it's not even doing anything webby like a Javascript engine that decodes whatever database Encarta used and rendered the data in crisp HTML.

If they had asked AI to do all the above, I'd be more impressed than this (I'm guessing) human-made slop...

netsharc··on Turning VS Code into a control panel with custom extensions
I love the future, you can now show webpages on your text editor which is built on top of a web browser rendering engine...
netsharc··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
This AI-written page seems to be typical of LLM: Sentences are 4 to 5 words long, and the reader have to fill in the details.

Did someone make 1x1x1 wooden cubes and remade Switzerland? Oh no, the tiny tiny text above the gigantic title says "Minecraft".

"Exactly as tall and as steep". How is a mountain that exists in a video game exactly as tall and steep as the real one?

Then there's an embedded map that is an attempt to convey information that I still can't figure out what.

How to run it? Aha, download Prism Launcher (not a clickable link), import the zip... and oh, you need to have purchased Minecraft too!

What an exercise in convolution...

netsharc··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
I watched a colleague's kid play a game on his iPhone. It was on airplane mode. But every so often a window would pop up trying to show an ad, and the kid would hand it to his dad, asking dad to "fix" it.

A pre-millennial computing experience would have the benefit of not having that sort of bullshit. For the patience-building experience it could be real floppies, but putting the games in an emulator is also an option. I guess Windows 11's "Install Copilot Edge OneDrive 365? [Yes/Maybe later]" popups means you'll have to go Linux...

netsharc··on Tesla cancels Cybertruck in Australia and NZ after 7 years of deposits
There's some Swiss dudes claiming they're going to make the C**Truck road legal in the EU: https://werk-lab.ch/en/cybertruck . Although I'm not sure if it's just crowdsourced moneygrab or legit.

In any case the website says the steps "Familiarization with all legal requirements that apply in Switzerland and the EU for approval" and "Consultations with the Road Traffic Office and test centers to define the testing requirements".

I'm guessing the familiarization and consultation steps would've revealed to them that "Yeah, nah, this isn't going to happen..."

But flying cars!

They should each get a jar of fumes from the jet exhaust of those "flying cars". This memorabilia will be worth a fortune!

As a bonus, one of the jars contains actual Musk fart. It could be the one you bought!

netsharc··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
Ah yeah, the serious serious crime of having stickers on busses...

Just as bad as storming the capitol!

netsharc··on Europe's summer heat wave killed more han 50k people in urban areas
What do you call it when the only one believing the lie is the liar himself... Getting high of one's supply?

If Europeans want AC, they can buy one. The speed of climate change is such that the 50k dead probably have thought they didn't need one and can cope with the "few days" of heat. (or can't afford one, but that's not a uniquely European problem (1)). In 2026 it was more than a "few days".

netsharc··on Show HN: Autonomous root for Tcl Android TV via CVE-2022-22706
It's an odd state of the world but here I am defending unrooted phones. Rootable phones mean rootkitable phones, and considering how many bank accounts are now accessible via touches and swipes, phones that are rootkitable do present a big financial danger.

Then again, we all still use browsers on rootable PCs, where the browser extension protection scheme is Google (hah) and Firefox (double hah) saying "Just trust us, users!".

netsharc··on Listen and read USA nuclear forces Emergency Action Messages, heard on 11175 kHz
Sheesh, hopefully a governmental department that has the NSA nearby would've been warned about this...

netsharc··on Password, Please: Border Searches of Laptops, Phones Up 32% This Year
I remember seeing a "Lonely Planet Guide to the USSR" book in a CouchSurfing host's shelf. A section about passing through the border mentions the possible interrogation and checks of your belongings...
netsharc··on Broccoli2Shell: Brotli decoder RCE in Node.js, Python and more
Well, whoever picked the name HTTP2Shell certainly didn't use any intelligence, artificial or genuine.

It's so meaningless, broad and undescriptive of the actual issue. No it probably doesn't affect an HTTP server with nothing else behind it, so why is HTTP being blasted?

You might as well call it Exploit Pro Max...

netsharc··on UN says breaching 1.5C warming limit is 'imminent and unavoidable'
Western consumers benefit from cheap products made by Chinese factories that have cheap labor and "negligible" environmental costs (i.e. factories don't need to pay to keep pollution to a minimum).

But yeah, you western consumer (I assume) point the finger at China, but when you're asked to pay more so your phone is made in a more environmentally-safe way, you'll balk and say "No way!". Maybe not you personally, but "you" the masses. Affordable flight to your next exotic country vacation vs sustainable vacation?

So the idea of environmental sustainability gets demolished the next time you pull out your wallet... meanwhile "China!", "India!".

And understandably, if these countries have to pay more so they can grow in a sustainable way, and they ask "Wouldn't it be fair if we ask the rich countries to pay for the past, where they grew in a ecologically destructive way?", the already rich countries reflexively say "No...".

netsharc··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
I doubt very much you have any backing for this statement...

In the micro level, Russians look to be lovely trusting people to each other. My source is an Instagram story of a guy pretending not to speak Russian, talking to drunk Russians on the street in English, and they're not agressive but they try to solve his problem. Yeah, great source, but I doubt it's much worse than yours.

netsharc··on No more icons in every menu by default
The conclusion is too forgiving...

> They designed it, shipped it, lived with it for a year, then publicly changed their guidance on it. To me, that’s a lot more persuasive than simply saying, “Apple doesn’t do this.”

> Choosing not to do something you’ve never done is one thing.

> Choosing not to do something you’ve done is experience.

A more persuasive sales pitch for me to consider Apple products would be if the company had judgement not to ship such a hot mess of a sloppy product in the first place...

netsharc··on I told people I'm a convicted felon after 20 years of hiding it

But this says 2013 so my guess doesn't line up.

netsharc··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Luckily that works well with democracy...

Government: "We need to sacrifice"

Populists: "No one will take/tax our gas-guzzling trucks and our beef! Make this country great again!"

Voters: "Fuck off government, put the populists in power instead!"

netsharc··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Maybe we'll manage to launch some datacenters, then at least there'll be a backup of the database of how much each person's net worth is, floating above the dead planet...

And if we have several of them in space, they'll use blockchain, of course.

Hah, that's a first:

netsharc··on Tesla 'Cannot Guarantee' Roadster Reservation Holders Will Ever Get a Car
For his latest cowardice (spot my bias), it seems a few days he agreed to Trump's demands to weaken Starlink so Ukraine's use was restricted, making them less able to defend against Russian jet-powered drones hitting civilian targets. How is that an action of a man worthy of any praise?

I assumed he ordered his Starlink-lackeys (also a group of self-serving cowards, in my opinion from the point of view on my high horse) because he wanted to remain/get back on Trump's good graces...

netsharc··on How Far Will AI Assistants Go for a Refund They Can't Get?
Somehow if a future headling said "AI agent hacks insurance company because of a $350 refund", I wouldn't be surprised, and I'd read the story with a thrill...
